E39 BMW 540i Muffler Delete DIY

- I love my E39 BMW 540i M-Sport; it is the perfect daily driver. However, that 300 HP V8 was WAY too quiet. After some quick research I decided a muffler delete was in order, but no one really had a video showing what to do. So, I made one. The hardest part is getting the right turndown size: 2.75 inches. I had to modify a 2.5 inch clamp on turndown and attach it with a band clamp.
I am so much happier with the car now. It sounds just as good as it looks and fits the speed of the car so much better. It was a super easy process (Despite my blade being dull). There is no drone when cruising as the car is so well built, but all full throttle it really sings. You won't regret this.

After over six months of no muffler, still love the sound. It's great on the high way, no drone. The car is so much more enjoyable!
Very enjoyable video! Im planning on doing the same thing to my 540 touring -02. Ive owned it 3 years now and its soooo quiet! I want to have that little "rawr" when i press the throttle =) Thanks!
can you provide a link where to buy the turndown pipe and the clamps ?
I picked it up off Amazon, but it's no longer available. Apologies for the late response; your comment was flagged for some reason.
1:19 "Marking it with the tape makes the line straighter" * starts sawing and the blade goes all over the place * * covers with his hand to spare the embarrassment * haha jk bro, good video
Nice video. I'm gonna try it this weekend. Just subbed to bring you to 1000
Thanks man! That really means a lot. Hope you enjoy the exhaust
hahaha the turndown tip looks fucking hilarious, I love it
Awesome!
Sounds nice!
Brandon Perez thank you!
Great Video, and channel. excited to take the knife to mine soon. Subscribed!
Sorry I missed this. Hope your car is treating you well!
Sorry I missed this. Hope your car is treating you well!
And I really want to know where u found the pipe tip sounds good
I just searched on Amazon for a tip that fit what I wanted. Turn down tip with a 2.75 inch diameter
Thank you!!
phil howell glad I could help!
what brand of reciprocating saw did you use? is that bauer? just curious if a Hercules reciprocating saw from Harbor Freight is strong enough.
It would be strong enough, yes
Since the pipe and clamp been taken down from amazon, do you know any substitutes? I’m trying to do this with my e39..
Any 2.75 inch (70mm) turn down and band clamp will work.
where did you get the turn down exhaust tip? or at least what size do i need to get and what are they called?
It's a weird size, like 70mm. Find a turndown that fit well was basically impossible. If you can weld, just use a 3 inch turndown to slip over the factory pipe.
what size muffler and clamp do i need for a 2001 540i?
2.75 inch which isn't super easy to find. Welding would probably be best if available.
Is the added turn down part necessary? Or could I run it just by cutting the muffler off and leaving it like that
The turn down helps direct the sound and exhaust down into the airflow under the car. Without it the sound reverberates under the trunk and drones. Plus the exhaust fumes can get into the car and the heat could effect the plastic bumper cover. It's worth the $40 for the turn down and the clamp.
350Z247 okay thanks
But how do you get those scuba tanks off the hanger?
I just unbolted the hanger from the car and didn't reuse it. It should also slip off with a bit of spray lubricant.
Why you would have music playing in the background
Why would you complain about a free video that you don't have to watch?
So what it the OD of the stock exhaust? 2.5"
It's a weird one. Like 2.7 inches.
@@350Z247 so you used a 2.75-2.5" exhaust clamp then?
@@KnuteJPhotos 2.5 ID pipe was pretty close to the stock 2.7 OD pipe. A 2.75 or 70mm clamp should work best.
So your saying the pips are but to but and there’s no leak I don’t understand how that would work
Band clamp; plus, if it leaks a bit, it doesn't really matter at the very end of the system.
Can I get a link to that turn down?
I picked it up off Amazon, but it's no longer available. Any 70mm turndown should work well.
Would the parts be the same for a bmw 525i 2001
Double check the exhaust diameter. I'm assuming it would be slightly smaller, but the idea is the same.
Where can you get them I can’t find them anywhere :(
@@ericsaavedra4989 Amazon, eBay, Summit Racing. Come on man.
dual scuba tank LOLOLOL
Where can I find that exhaust??
Brandon Perez it's a 2.5 inch clamp on turndown from Gibson that I slightly modified. I ground off the tightening bolt and used a butt clamp to attach it to the cut stock exhaust.
what size is the butt clamp
Owen Faehner 2.5 to 2.75 inch
awesome thanks! and how did you grind off the bolt?
Owen Faehner cut off wheel on an angle grinder then ground it smooth with a flap wheel
can u get a loud muffle ticket for doing this?
I doubt anywhere would ticket this. I've driven Porsches and Jaguars with louder exhaust than this with the muffler delete. Even when I deleted the resonator its not that loud unless I floor it in which case they would get me for speeding. Just cruising no one would ever pay much attention to it.
ok thanks man i appreciate it
Asassin Trollz If drone bothers you DONT remove the resonator
I replaced the giant stock resonator with a Cherry Bomb resonator, and there is zero drone. The exhaust exits in near stock location which helps too.
Delete the resonator and the sound will be amazing
Ali علي Cars&things I already did. There's a video of the result. It's such a good sound!
350Z247 link?
ua-cam.com/video/rSRHdhQdaJo/v-deo.html
Do you notice any performance difference?
No. It might help a bit but probably nothing dramatic. If you replaced the whole system it would because you can definitely see some restrictions. The main advantage would be weight loss. Really, it just feels faster because it sounds faster ha
tire name?
At the time, BFG G-FORCE SPORT COMP-2s. Now I have Federal ST1s.
@@350Z247 ty :)
Any codes pop up after
Nope, and no codes when I later replaced the stock resonator as well.
@@350Z247 you liking the car I been thinking about getting one was gonna get a w8 but I want to have rwd
@@jacobmorzfeld4991 I loved it and often miss it. The sound was perfection. It was literally the perfect daily especially once I got it all fixed up.
@@350Z247 for sure so you would recommend it?
@@jacobmorzfeld4991 100% I would also recommend spending a bit more up front. I bought mine for $4,000 and put $2,000 into it (luckily, I sold it for $6,000), but if I had bought the $5,500 one originally, I would have enjoyed it a bit more and wrenched a bit less. But it really was a great car with a ton of support from videos, parts, and forums/groups
LoL
DONT TRY THIS AT HOME.
seek a PROPER SPECIALIST
This is about as easy as DIYs get, especially for how big a difference it makes
imagine needing a specialist for this. you shouldn’t own a BMW.
