    The idea of a train chugging past Saturn and stopping off at a station on one of its moons must be the most romantic notion of space travel ever to grace a science fiction story.

      agreed, like crazy romantic

      Very much so. In fact, I think of Galaxy Express 999 as more of a space fantasy, rather than science fiction.

    That saturday afternoon special really is what got me into anime back when I was about 10 or 11 years old (I'll be turning 20 years old in three weeks if that tells you how long ago this was). I finally rediscovered this movie about two weeks ago, but there's still one movie I can't remember. It was a weird movie where random things kept happening throughout this town, like a tank going into a pool, and they took a plane to find out that the city was on the back of a giant turtle. What was it

    OMG this IS real. I saw this movie around 1984 on HBO when I was 9 years old and it blew my mind. I felt so much sorrow for the boy looking for his mom.

    @Dyonivan I believe the movie you are refering to is "Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer". i see your comment was two years ago, sorry i didn't see it sooner. but that was a movie that i rented and copied onto VHS back in '93 i think. my video store had a lot of anime.

    It took me a year to find the movie you and I were trying to think of, but I finally found it. It's a movie called Urusei Yatsura - Movie 2: Beautiful Dreamer. Apparently Urusei Yatsura was a pretty famous manga/anime series back in the early 80s, centering around the cast of Ranma 1/2. You have no idea how excited I was when I finally found that movie, now if only I could remember the movie I thought this series was about. You know, the train one.

    Imagine my surprise when I found out that it was made by Leiji! ^^ (was that how you spell his name?)

    I remember seeing it on the Sci Fi channel and then going out and finding the movies on my own. Interestingly enough, they edited the HELL out of the films on Sci fi. I'm talking like a whole half hour was taken out. Also, interestingly enough, the soundtrack they use in THIS trailer is from the GE 999 tv series. Sadly there is no major release of these films on dvd. But, if you find them on bootleg, the translations are ripped from the out of print Viz releases. ;)

  • @Dyonivan
    @Dyonivan 14 років тому

    Never mind on the train thing, I realized about 5 minutes after I posted the comment that this IS the train movie. Silly me. Too bad that this movie isn't even available on DvD on Amazon.

    @OniKensei 13 років тому

    @Dyonivan I know this is a year late, but I know this one. It's Urusei Yatsura - Beautiful Dreamer. The second film I believe, usually considered the best. It's part of a series of films in the Urusei Yatsura anime series. The anime series itself is quite good and is based on a manga of the same name by the creator of Ranma 1/2 and Inuyasha among others. It's nothing at all like anime today.

  • @Captain__Harlock
    @Captain__Harlock 9 років тому +4

    I have never watched this anime or movie. The concept of a train in Space baffled me. However as a Captain Harlock's biggest fanboi (It's official) I had heard he played a small minor role in this so wanted to check it out. Minor role my ass! OMG and he's even got the supped up green Arcadia of My Youth from the movie "Arcadia of My Youth" Which is odd because this came out in 74 I believe and AoMY came out in 79-80. Meh, hell they got Emeraldas and Toshiro so Im guessing the crew of the Arcadia come into play heavily. Im going to watch this movie right now!

    • @PhilHartwell
      @PhilHartwell 7 років тому +1

      You should check out Adieu GE999 and GE999 Eternal Fantasy for more Harlock goodness. And if you like those, he's also in the prequel Space Symphony Maetel---which is the show that got me into GE999 tv... but Harlock is not in the GE999 tv show unless getting a passing mention counts for anything.

    • @Captain__Harlock
      @Captain__Harlock 7 років тому

      I might have to check those out as well, loved the movie, it was full of action, drama, and sci-fi badassey by yours truly. ;) Really Harlock isn't in the GE999 tv show? That's kinda disappointing, watched a couple episodes on youtube, and I saw in some video titles Emeraldas makes an appearance so I expected the good Captain to be there as well.

    • @PhilHartwell
      @PhilHartwell 7 років тому +1

      He is, but as a shadow... you see a blip of his ship leaving after the Time castle arc. Probably the high point of the tv show if the crisp animation is any indicator. Although... even if the Captain mostly isn't there, if you're enjoying it keep going, I think GE999 tv is better than the movie. In particular, the tv show evokes a strong whimsical atmosphere that charmed me enough to rank in my top 20 anime, and comparatively the movie lacked the subtle mystical longing that I liked about GE999.

Off the ledge, they see that they're on the back a giant turtle. I'm gonna start looking for that now. Any help finding this anime will be greatly appreciated since I was sure that I dreamed it up.
