“Ryan 5.9 McCaffrey” was the asshole at IGN who ruined any chance of a sequel. He basically complained how hard it was (whilst playing on hard) long story short, he didn’t know how to play a survival horror, he was dying a lot because he was being dumbass playing, he said the “AI was too smart” which is what you should expect from a survival horror, play smart and outsmart the alien. There was times I got frustrated during this game, I died because I was careless and not cautious whilst proceeding, that’s the point you got punished by the alien for just running around not staying silent and out of sight. Ryan McCaffrey gave call of duty the same year a solid 9/10 when call of duty was complete ass back then with all its futuristic spaceman exo suit shit.

IGN did the same to Days Gone, which, to me, is one of the best games I've ever played and one of very few I've replayed multiple times. YMMV, but the IGN review is often cited as one of the reasons DG is not getting a sequel either (despite actually being very popular and making good $$). I actively avoid reading IGN now and/or sending any ad proceeds their way. IGN SUX! Boycott IGN!!!

That’s the thing about reviews, each one is based on the individual and should always be taken with a grain of salt.
I’m sure you have a lot of garbage opinions of games many consider to be good as well.
A lot of people do in general. For example I’m sure you’re one of the people who rate games 1 to 10 but then say no game will ever be a 10.
From the start you have a flawed opinion and rating system. You have rating system where one score can never be obtained.

It is just factually an opinion some people take reviews way too seriously like its a fact.
HOWEVER the people that jizz for joy like its the greatest game on earth have made the game sooooo highly overrated.
Its not all that great. Its not awful, but its nowhere near a "great" game. 30hrs is far too long, for being a inconsistent, "sneaking" simulator, it was weird the way it turns into a shooter halfway through the game before turning back into a sneaking simulator again. The average sneaking/walking sim is short because they literally go out of their way to not drag out a game where your constantly crawling at a snails pace doing nothing but menial tasks but not Alien Isolation
The AI could be downright god awful at times nothing more aggravating than having to reload checkpoint when the "save points" are spread out way to far all because the Alien AI breaks gets stuck in a loop, your stuck in a locker for 5 minutes just praying that it breaks out of the loop because reloading means your going back 20-30 minutes.
Since people ALWAYS try to bring up Resident Evil...RE1 is about 3hrs long not 30+hrs and your not crawling everywhere

      Two Pro tips:
      #1
When you find an ingredient that you have “full” place the excess in to a blueprint (even if you don’t have all the ingredients or have a maximum amount of) it acts as a ready-to-made item.

Yeah bro the review was nonsensical. Dude was critiquing the game for having aspects true to its genre. A similar review by IGN was also made for Jurassic World Evolution.
The reviewer stated that the game “lacked the action and thrill of the films”. Like I’m sorry but what game do you think you’re playing? It’s a simulation park builder and you’re criticizing it for lacking action!?
IGN is full of clowns who apparently don’t understand that games operate within certain genres and therefore have an experience categorized by such. Alien Isolation is about as good as an Alien game can be. Is it perfect? Well that’s subjective. Personally I find it pretty damn close to perfect as a survival horror experience set in that franchise. The same way Jurassic World Evolution was near perfect for a park building experience in that franchise.
In my honest opinion though while this review didn’t help the game I don’t think it was THE deciding factor in its sales performance. I’d give that credit to Colonial Marines. That game was such a flop and stain on the franchise that I feel like most people just disregarded Isolation due to it sharing the same property name.
Although a sequel is definitely in high demand and considering the game’s cult following and recent boom in sales due to the film (which I loved) we might see one. Apparently there’s rumors of it already being in the works. I sure hope it happens because this game is truly one of a kind!

A lot of game reviews in the last 20 years have been nonsensical. I think since gaming became as mainstream as watching a movie a lot of reviewers have tried to be highbrow critics (like most movie critics) that often completely misunderstand the whole point of the thing they're reviewing and the reason they're reviewing it in the first place. I haven't trusted a professional movie critic in 30 years or a gaming critic in 20. In both cases the opinions of regular people who choose to spend their money to watch/play for entertainment is a far more accurate indication of the product's quality.

Honestly my biggest take away from isolation was how impressed i was with how it managed to use its length so well. Yeah it teeters on just too long but it never actually gets there imo. It packs a hell of a punch with that runtime, the backtracking wasnt super prevalent and made sense when it was. Working joes add some needed variety to the stalking dynamic, and a sense of security like you say. In no way does any of this make a bad survival horror nor a bad alien game, in fact its probably one of the best of both these spirits, so it really is baffling it got anything below an 8.

  • @NervXT
    @NervXT 2 місяці тому +11

The one thing I agree with in the IGN review is the length of the game. In my opinion, it felt like the last few chapters of the game were needlessly drawn out. I think if you cut a few hours from those last few chapters, the game's pacing would feel a lot better and the experience would be more rewarding. That said, the review was terrible, primarily because I don't think Ryan understood the mechanics of the game properly. In both the written review and video review, he complains about being killed over and over again. Hundreds of times in fact, in the 13 or so hours he played, as he stated. If you watch the footage of the review, you see that he's hiding in lockers with his motion tracker out when the Xeno is right in front of the locker. Maybe he didn't piece it together, but the motion tracker makes audible noise that the Xeno can hear if it's close enough. Though his review does mention sound as being one such thing that the Xeno can use to track or find you, so I've no idea what he was doing.
Ryan goes on to lay out his strategy which is to go from hiding spot to hiding spot and basically waiting there until the Alien leaves. As the game will tell you if you die by being found in such a spot, lockers and vents are only ever a temporary way to evade the Xeno. While the Xeno generally overlooks lockers and vents initially, if the game sees you're constantly hiding from it in these places, it'll gradually increase the likelihood of the Xeno checking those spots when investigating an area. To be clear, they are meant to be used, but they weren't intended for you to hide in them the entire time the Xeno is out stalking. They are meant as a last resort option, when it has you cornered or when no other method of distraction is available to you. If you watch a few let's plays, you'll see that people hiding in these spots for minutes at a time isn't at all uncommon, which makes me feel this issue was discovered during play testing. The developers want you to outsmart it, that is why they give you all those tools and devices to use, and the control boxes that give you an advantage, but seemingly so many people forget about or don't use. They don't want you hiding in lockers or vents all the time. It's meant to be tense and scary, but the confidence comes from facing that fear and eventually, outsmarting it.

    • @erzatitaniawins
      @erzatitaniawins  2 місяці тому +4

I honestly believe he had no idea about a lot of these things in terms of avoiding or outsmarting the Alien. Hell one of the biggest advantages you can use in the game unlike in the movies is sound. It just seems like they wanted to do the same strategy all the time but the AI of the Alien will punish you if you don't change it up and evolve.

That review is poorly written and it almost feels like the guy didn't even really play the game. He certainly wasn't an alien Fan. Elden Ring has more backtracking than AI does, btw. Finally, saying a game is "too long" is like saying, "hmm, I paid 30000 for this car, but it's too large and has too many features, and looks too good to be that price", or "I got more groceries than I thought I was going to get for that $10 bucks"... Saying a game is "too long" is complaining about value. This game holds up to this day, and I still play it regularly.

It's such a well made game which did Alien proud. Easily the best film to game adaptation, incredible visuals and atmosphere and it felt like you were in the film. An amazing feat.

I made this comment on a different video. But I cannot get over this 5.9 grade. So that means no one else I guess looks at it to approve it and tell him that the review is wrong. The game is good and tough. Should have gotten a 7 at bare minimum or an 8. But 5.9 is ridiculous

My one complaint about Alien Isolation is that it's too long. The story and events just drag on for way longer without anything new or interesting happening gameplay wise for hours

IGN was a joke 8 years before this game's review. When they gave God Hand a 3. Which was an even more embarrassing and inaccurate review of a good game. A shame they did it to another good game like Alien Isolation.

Something I actually LEARNED in film school: when people complain something's too long, what they actually mean is that they lost engagement. Shortening whatever movie/show/game they thought was too long won't fix the problem. I love Isolation to death...but I will agree there are pacing problems.

Yep, that's how it looks... as they say these days "I felt the video" (at least in Germany^^). Isolation that I haven't uninstalled since it was released, every now and then I get the urge to play a round of Last Survivor or Replaceable Crew.
In my opinion, this game ages just as well as the film Alien 1 and that's because a) they had access to the film material for development and they really delivered. I can't remember any game-breaking bugs when it was released either...
10 years ago...!? I can still remember my first run so well, it was just an incredible experience, I had only played Outlast in Horror Survival before that or was that later?! Whatever, awesome video!

I definitely agree with you on this. Such a tragic score for this amazing game. Sure it has its flaws like some combat issues regarding the gun play but I don’t fault the game for it because it’s suppose to be a survival horror more than an action game. But wow I think a sequel for this definitely had potential to be 10/10. I hope despite everything that eventually we do get one.

To new players: For the best experience, limit your FPS to 60 by some means. (There is no in-game option for that.) Symptoms of too high FPS include:
    - Increasingly often deaths to the Xenomorph are silent. (And they have good audio, so don't miss out. ;-) )
    - Animations getting out of sync with their audio. (E.g. the sound of a passing train ends, but the train hasn't passed yet.)
    - Above ~300 fps, when pre-recorded cutscenes end, the game goes into slow-motion.
    - Above ~300 fps, gameplay speeds up.
The easiest fix is to run it on a 60 Hz monitor and enable VSync in-game, but you can also use the AMD/NVIDIA/Intel gfx driver setting that limits FPS or use a third party FPS limiter such as Riva Tuner Statistics Server.

Excellent advice. I would add that you are still OK if you limit your fps to 100 fps. Anything above 100 fps will result in the issues you very well described. The easiest way to do this is by setting the maximum fps to 100 in the Nvidia control panel.

Also recently watched Romulus and replayed Isolation. Loved both, although had some minor issues with Romulus ;) Gonna go watch your Romulus review now as I also have a lot to say on the Alien franchise on my own channel. Good work sir.

This game is almost a masterpiece. It has perfect atmosphere, still looks great 10 years later, and quite possibly one of the best movie games ever made. However, in my opinion, the alien AI drags it down alot.
They announced the 2nd one, and its Halloween, so im playing through it again. Even knowing what to do, the game is to trial and error and restarting to much absolutely destroys the horror and the tension. The alien is litterly tethered to you by a leash and will just hang out around you.
Its not a bad game, it does 90% things right. But i understand the bad reviews. It is also way to long for what it is.
Alien isolation isn't hard, it is just frustrating sometimes. It does indeed punish you, but there's not really much for the player to do other than restart and hope the alien walks somewhere else this time.

    • @haroldbishopstuba7058

The alien is tied to you because it's smart and it's hunting you. That's the entire point

    • @ickasaurus1195
      @ickasaurus1195 Місяць тому

@@haroldbishopstuba7058 if it's so smart why will it just walk back and forth in front of a door. Or ignore other humans walking around talking all willy nilly until you show up and make noise.
I get what they are going for, and it works to some extent, but it only gets frustrating, it doesn't make the Alien feel smart, IMO it makes the alien feel dumb, its some apex predator but it will walk around a table for 5 min if your under it. Horror games don't need some advanced AI, and the game feels 10x better with a mod that gives it a bigger range instead of always walking around right where you are.

9:11 I agree, as it’s also satisfying when you finally beating a section of the game. Such as that second I struggle so much, that being where you have gotten that hacking device in the elevator. You sneak around from them people, Who are looking for you. I died so many times by them. When I got to that room with the tiny chairs near where the objective is to fix the device, and to finally get away from them. I remember instead of just letting them shoot me just because they found me. I’ve learned that I could just go and whack them people, knocking down 2 or 3 people, and then just ran right to it and survived it. Only having Half of my health from that experience. I just started playing the game couple days ago because of the new movie too. That’s what just happened to me playing the game again.
It was so satisfying, and a relief feeling from surviving it just like in the movies. That‘s what I think is the point of they making this game. Having those moments and experiencing them like in the movie, and exploring the ship and facing the one and only Xenomorph itself

Probably my second favorite fps just behind the og Bioshock.
I was on a podcast a few years ago and when I listed this game as an innovative and a personsl favorite (after I bashed Elden Ring and stated it was trash) I was instantly flamed.
They had brought up that ign gave it a low score and I immediately had to go on the defensive for it. Ryan McCaffery doesn't know his ass from a hole in the wall.
The game holds up incredibly well to this day and is probably the scariest 20 hours you can put in any game. Graphics are fantastic, sound design is top notch. The tension just builds for soo long and then that amazing moment comes when you finally get brave to move around like a boss using utilities to take down droves of Joes and fuel to incinerate the Alien. It works incredibly well, all of it.
The only gripe is the end escape. Sure its at a point where you're ready to just finish and be done but it definitely builds tension back up in that last 10 minutes.
    It's certainly a travesty that it got a 5.9
By the way are you a vr guy? Incursion is due out in December for vr.
