how to - wallpapering around a window - the nasty bit

  • Wallpapering around a window or door reveal can be tricky. Here I show you one way you can do it, without the need to splice, over lap and cut through the paper.
    The less cuts on the surface the better. Some times there may need to be an overlap cut/splice depending on how the wallpaper falls over or above a window or door.
    Try and hide or lose these by doing it where you cant see it or notice it. Behind curtains/drapes is a good place.

    Hello Phil, I was a decorator for ten years (1996-2006), then I went off and had a “career” which after 16 years I have had enough of and have decided to go back to my passion. Just started out again. Paste the wall has clearly come on a long way since my first time round because it was truly awful. Difficult to control the saturation. I’m always happy to move with the times and blend the traditional with new ways but have you encountered any issues with the modern PTW papers? And do you use dedicated PTW paste?
    Really appreciate your videos, when I was working out how to go back to decorating they kept me inspired, so thank you. All the best

    • @ProfessionalPainterDecorator

      Lovely words Thanks.
      PTW.... Don't over think it.
      But..... Some PTW papers have very very small 'glass' beads on them.. drop everywhere.
      Even though they are non woven PTW. Those papers are best to be pasted on the paper. Brush down the length to get any loose beads off, then paste as normal. Then hang.
      The reason you don't PTW with those.... If you did, the beads can drop off while hanging.. stick to the paste in the wall.. you can't see to remove them.. but they'll show up under the paper like a bowling ball once youve got it on.
      Also get yourself a decent laser liner.

      The fabric wall rock or the polystyrene backed one?
      You can, but you cut it neat to the corners
      Then polystyrene/paper faced one, if you have and gaps etc, use one of those light weight fillers .. like red devil or the prestone light weight fillers..... Keep it neat and it will dry
      Then you'll line over it again just with the normal fibre non woven wallpaper rock.

    I'm part way through a job where I'm papering a bathroom with a heavily patterned floral vinyl paste the wall for the customer, it was spliced around the window previously, so was going to do the same, but you've got me rethinking it now!

    • @ProfessionalPainterDecorator
      @ProfessionalPainterDecorator  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Kris.
      Do what you feel is best visual to the eye.. also for you too.
      I had one yesterday I had to slice as I had no room to fit a piece under. But it was no pattern, no match and you couldn't see it.
      If you have spare paper . Try both ways if you can.
      What you don't want is a splice through the pattern that moves and it then doesn't look like it's matching.
      Every job is different. It's being able to do various ways that's handy to have in your arsenal ;)

    • @ProfessionalPainterDecorator
      @ProfessionalPainterDecorator  2 роки тому +1

      How did the paper look before being spliced?

    • @krisholden8490

      @@ProfessionalPainterDecorator looked okay to be fair, it's a light background design, the edges had darkened slightly but considering it's a bathroom with only a window for ventilation it had held up pretty well, they had a 5mm overlap on the underside too, where the upright part met the spliced in section underside. The customer was good at decorating when they were a bit younger and did it themselves I think.

      @ProfessionalPainterDecorator  Рік тому

      Why not?
      It a good way, when you have papers that can show cut joints, or there's a chance of pattern looking off due to cutting through it.
      Nothing worse than seeing an angle cut from the corner of a reveal to a good paper edge.
      Doing it how i show means you'll lose any cut edge on the corner of the reveal.
      The less cuts and splices the better.

    • @drdecorator9532
      @drdecorator9532 Рік тому +1

      I would just have one vertical splice which would be seamless and with correct pattern match.
      On the under wrap around I imagine you would have a sharp edge against your next piece which you have wrapped around. If it works for you great and your client is happy, that all that matters. Plenty of ways to skin a cat as they say!

    • @ProfessionalPainterDecorator
      @ProfessionalPainterDecorator  Рік тому

      you need to weigh up the type of paper too,
      that blue oriental style paper I show on other videos, I did cut top to bottom over a window...
      1. the window edges could take it.
      2. the paper was non woven and cut well
      3. how the papers fell, it meant I could lose the cut well, without seeing it due to the fussiness of the pattern.
      So I do it that way as well, when needed/or when allows.

    • @ProfessionalPainterDecorator
      @ProfessionalPainterDecorator  2 роки тому +1

      thanks for the comment. If you are talking about PASTE the paper.. as long as you allow it to soak the correct length of time, you don't get expansion/stretch of the paper. I see people having problems with expansion, but that comes down to not giving it enough time.

    Your doing a good job but in my opinion you shouldn't put a but joint above a window like that because all it takes it a slight bit of moisture and it will probably curl up , a double cut when done correctly will not and shouldn't be noticeable at all, I was a painter and decorator for 38 years so I know what I'm talking about, wish you well as you are doing well

    • @ProfessionalPainterDecorator
      @ProfessionalPainterDecorator  Рік тому +1

      If moisture gets on that edge, it would also on any butt joint around it.
      Double cuts are fine, as long as the paper suits a double cut, if the pattern mis matches through a cut it shows like a sore thumb.
      It's knowing what to use where and what looks best.
      Keep an eye out for future posts on Instagram and the Facebook page, you'll see some papering where the paper needed to be double cut and the reveals needed to be wrapped around due to the rounded edges on the edges.
