I totally agree with the comment on the scheduling of the outlets. I was hoping to do just that with the USP-Strip I have. The modem power cycle is a great feature, but would be great to have the ability to setup control for primary and secondary modems for those with dual WAN.
This is the evolution of the single power plug they came out with a few years back. For a "Pro" device, it would have been great if it had dual power and you could switch ports between power sources, so one is the grid, the other is UPS, and you could keep critical equipment backed up but have the ability to manage it from UniFi. The redundant router HA system seems a little strange to have it run through this, along with not having dual service support. That seems like it would need to be its own device or have the software manage dual UDMP with individual ISPs and do load balance but failover when you lose internet.
@@handlealreadytaken The ports are not made for switching, redundant ethernet is there typically so that you can remain connected to the network when a switch goes down, redundant layer 2 links. If this thing has one port, is conected to a core switch, and the switch goes down, good luck rebooting anything. Having two ethernet ports ensures that you are connected to both switches in a redundant pair.
@@TheDrew2022 what providers are slowly deploying faster than 1g internet connections. Users with 1g or less will be fine with the port but anyone with 2g or faster will not. My provider updated my ethernet input to support their 2g service for my connection and if I subscribed to it this solution would not work for that use-case.
With the rack fans, I usually buy Noctua fans and use a 12V adapter, this allows airflow out the top. I also put a spacer between the fans and the rack so there is no noise wind turbulence
My experience is pdu's typically do NOT have surge protection and I certainly usually don't want it to. Daisy chaining surge protection can create issues and the pdu should be downstream of your power conditioning equipment like a ups with surge protection for a basic pdu. Some pdu's include bypass functionality and those still won't be surge protectors but they will be both upstream and downstream of the ups with an ability to bypass the ups for maintenance.
I concur...we had a 300v+ lately from just 250v max and all PDUs are ok. But the Servers and ruijie manage switches were fried. However, the unifi pro switches were ok. Hence...unifi pro switches are quite built well as well as the UAP access points as they have survived that 300v+.
The Wattbox line is somewhat similar albeit significantly more expensive, but also far more feature rich. Already included are time based events and the ability to set up ping monitoring to any local IP or web address. Based on those ping results you can have an outlet or group of outlets power cycle based on a selected number of ping timeouts over a selected amount of time. An important feature Ubiquiti needs to add is the ability to specify individual outlets as reboot only for network devices. This prevents you from remotely turning off your network device and losing the connection to turn it back on.
@@TheSpiv while I agree in principle, in my experience it was almost exclusively limited to the 700 series 12 outlet model. Snap was also very good about stepping up and covering them well outside of the warranty period plus a $100 dealer credit.

The only experience I have with a PDU is a unit that has two power inputs on the back, each for different power sources to handle power outages. I'm trying to figure out how I feel about having only one power plug on the back.
They need a Fallback configuration for those ports. Each port you can config if you want it to default to OFF or ON when the UDM loses power and comes back on. Would solve that fan on issue. Would be nice to see some probes for those USB-C ports. Ambient air sensor...to do some IF/OR/THAN statements for fans and such. A lot of possibilities.
So what happens is all ports are live on power-up, and then ONLY once the PDU Pro boots up, it will then shut them off as per settings (disable)? That is not good.
@@bsem68 not sure I understand. Fallback is only for when the OS is not booted. It's like flipping something from normally open to normally closed. You tell the system what state your want the specific device to power back on at. Once the OS is up it's back to normal operations.
Excellent review Chris. On seeing that the power ports could be controlled by software I was hoping there was a timer just like you wished! For my application that would be really helpful. Excellent product!
Was thinking of the same thing but this how every other PDU works too. I guess in an outage you could manually turn off power ports but you have to be available to do so.
A real good feature would be the ability to hood Unifi backup power to this to run non unifi equipment. Have a battery or two in the rack feeding the PDU in power outages. Then have the ability to send shutdown commands over the network from the controller to the servers. Similar to how a lot of UPS devices can shutdown systems via USB or network.
Data Centers use separate PDUs, A- PDU is for UPS, and B- PDU is for Grid. or A and B for UPS and C and D for Grid. 1 PDU that has 2 different power sources is pointless. If PDU fails, then all systems are down. If you want redundancy, it must be a separate unit.
Just bought one and will get it installed on my new 9U rack I got. I', trying to keep it all white and silver coordinated. I was wondering how to use those ports up front but my setup is simple so I will only be using the FE port for my setup. For your LED lights, just get a Hubitat Hub and a Zigbee / Zwave outlet. I think the PDU Pro is meant for hardware, not accessories. In a computer rack I'm not sure how useful a power scheduler would be for any hardware. Great video thank you :)
Scheduling a weekly or monthly reboot of an ISP modem often avoids issues caused by high uptime and keeps things running smoothly. Would’ve been great for them to include the feature.
Wow, I really like the automatic Internet sensor that power cycles the modem. Our company manages over 50 networks and the most common failure is ISP’s equipment. A simple power cycle restores it. I question the quality of Internet sensor because some ISPs fail by reducing speed 95%. Internet works, but painfully slow. Overall, this looks like a great device.
They sell the little plug as well that will do the same thing. Its pretty cheap and just the single plug on it. Its $20. USP-Plug-US The only downside to the plug is that it has to connect wirelessly to the network, and not hardwired in. I am running dual failover WAN ISP's and have it on the primary modem. So typically it will fail over to the 2nd ISP and nothing will happen with the plug. Its only if the 2nd ISP fails and then it will reboot the primary link's modem to see if it can get it back. Most of the time with ours it's just a network hit on the primary ISP network and back up pretty quick. It fails over just long enough to mess up all your work VPNs and then fails back.
I understand maybe my home network rack isn't their target customer, but I think the outlets on the "front" was a mistake. I don't want outlets on the front and my rack doesn't have a "back" to mount to . I think all the power I/O should have been on one side, and the other side with the network and display.
Why didn't they just use IEC sockets rather than US mains sockets so that they can used around the world, which would also allow denser ports because most people use IEC->Mains adapters for wall plugs/warts/transformers/whatever-you-call-them-in-your-country-s, and they'd be more in-line with the rest of the products (APC etc) on the market
Pity there isn’t a screen on the back as well. As most items that are rack mounter have power at the rear, so mounting it like you did makes the most sense, however without a screen on the back you have to go to a the web interface to do anything.
Would be cool if they made smaller PDUs that could be network managed. I run an arcade and would love to be able to manage power distribution to my games
using latest non EA firmware only the FE port on the front connects to switch to bring online. the rear isp and front 2 gbe ports arent shown or working in unifi network
Does it have any api access and/or command line access via ssh? in order to do your own grouping/controlling/scheduling.. for example, if it was plugged into a ups, and you have automation that detects when it's on/off battery, to then gracefully shutdown the device and/or configure the plug to be off. and once power is back on re-enable the plug(s)
I was thinking the same, that one would need to have a pair, with dual-PSU (or RPS, if you prefer) devices plugging each into each, but then that $550 just for a pair of PDUs, before thinking about the UPS.

No, the isp port on the back is simply a passthrough. meaning , you dont need to use it; you can simply plug the FE port into your core switch or router and manage it the same way you manage the rest of your unifi stack.
Future video suggestion: take a look at the new Internet Health feature on the UDMP dashboard. Mine shows high latency when I'm gaming on my 500/500 fiber connection which averages 6ms latency most other times. I'm wondering if Ubiquiti had inadvertently shone a light on the anemic routing capability of the UDMP with this feature.
In my case, the high latency spikes were driven by high CPU (around 70%), which is caused by a component of the Talk module (freeswitch -- even if Talk is not started), but is fixed in UniFi OS 1.12.24. My UDMP CPU is now running around
So they added a 2-port switch for the WAN connection. I see this often to "split" a single WAN connection to redundant firewalls when the ISP gives one handoff. Still, adds another point of failure. Granted, if the PSU source fails, you have more problems due to a lot of the unifi stuff I have encountered have single power inputs. Wonder what the longevity on these will look like compared to the likes of APC or Eaton.
The auto reboot of the modem is nice. However, if working remotely and there's poor Internet, not no Internet which would trigger the auto reboot, is there a manually selectable reboot option for each port? If you manually turn the port off to reboot the device, you can't turn it back on because you just lost your Internet access, so a reboot option would be needed. The recommendation is to usually power the device off for 30+ seconds before turning it back on. Does the auto reboot do this? If a manual reboot exists, does it do this?
Chris - Great video. I would suggest looking at the Wattbox which has great software and is feature rich from my experience. Every client Ubiquiti install I also put in a Wattbox which has saved me multiple times.
Modem reboot - are there any settings/limitations for this, like wait time? If the modem is getting a firmware update or the link is down there's no point in rebooting it constantly.
Just watched your show and notice that you switch off your server fans as they were too noisy. I have a similar setup and I use NOCTUA NF-A14 PWM fans which deliver the same air flow as the ones that you have at a fraction of the noise. Maybe worth a look.
This video reminded me that I am not signed up for early access, so I fixed that. I am also curious, if Ubiquiti is going to going down this route with their Unifi Lineup, if they have something in store in the UPS area or amaybe if this product will support hookup to an external set of batteries to run uninterupted. I am looking forward to see where they go in the future.
Regarding the discrepancy/confusion with the Ethernet ports: is there any possibility that your Early Access hardware differs from the final, released hardware? There might have been changes.
The scheduling of ports is a big miss. The other thing I'm sad to see is the WAN ports are limited to gig, and not sfp for higher speeds. It would be nice if you were able to have two sets of AC inputs for different circuits.

Isn’t it dangerous that it would power cycle the modem automatically? What if the modem is doing a firmware update and it power cycled it since the internet went down?
1.07a @ 120v is 128.4w. Conversely, 90.97w @ 1.07a requires 85.02v at the receptacle. So that feature appears broken. Why does the uplink section have a power figure? Is it a PoE port?
Looks more like capacitive load, so lots of reactive power. Switching PSUs are nutorious for having relatively high capacitive load at low load conditions compared to their real input power, unless they have decent power factor correction. Most Unifi/Ubiquiti equipment uses generic PSUs that dont have power factor correction, so thats most likely why you see these numbers, as in his test setup mostly Unifi Gear is connected to the PDU. TLDR: You cant just do V x A with AC, the phase has to be taken into account, therefore real power in AC systems is V x A x cosine of phaseangle.
I can see a problem with the Modem Power Cycle that scares me. That is the Modem is in a middle of a firmware update and this cut the power to it. I would love to see a way that you could set a timer for it. Like if you lose internet wait X number of mins before rebooting the Modem. This would make me feel a ton better about turn this on in my home network.

Great video, although I do have some questions, how does the USP determine if the internet connection goes down, if it is pinging an address can it be configured? Does it just use the uplink monitor in the UniFi controller or can it be set differently? and I’d love to know more about the WAN failover, I wonder if it could be used with pfSense, I assume not

Watbox are worth it if you can afford it. I enjoy the easy of use and that fact I can connect to OVRC to manage it is pretty cool. I have used it to reboot the router at my parents house as I used one for their min rack.
This may seem like a dumb question, but is this intended to plug directly into a power backup like the SmartPower RPS Pro? If I'm wanting everything that is plugged into this to have backup power...thats the idea.
Unfortunately the ISP modem reset service is flawed and on my USP-Plug at least, it resets the modem often for no reason, and occasionally just turns off the plug and I have to manually turn it back on. So I've had to disable that "feature". Do you encounter this problem with the Plug, as well as with other devices like the UDM power port and SmartPower ports?
Are you sure that Lan port arrangement isn't just a lan pass-through to provide lightning protection/isolation from faults affecting the wan service cable - this is pretty typical for your average more expensive and larger power extender units - most have both LAN and RJ11 telephony ports, and others even have Coax for sattellite or TV pass-through. the fact you can connect more than 1 UDM is interesting, but may just be a hard wire split where the wan IP would be set within the UDM.
That is exactly what I was thinking. A hardware switched port that will switch the wan between the two outputs.. someone needs to disassemble and look at what is inside there.
What type of connector is on the mains power supply cord? I'm guessing that since total current draw is rated for 15A on 125VAC that it is the residential standard NEMA 5-15 plug and not the commerical/data center standard NEMA 5-20 or NEMA 5-30L plugs... Shame - it would be AWESOME to be able to slam on or more of these into the 5-30 receptacles on the back of a few of my large dc UPSs
Chris, I hit you up on Twitter about this but have you had any success with using the USB-C ports. I was interested in this and got it after watching your video, but I have had two now and they charge or power up nothing.
Something I think Ubiquiti could offer: customisation. Think about it. Some users in professional settings may not have as many cables going from NEMA 5-15P to either hardwired in or an IEC 60320-spec connector. Some may simply have 60320 female to 60320 male. Most people won't have a need for a USB-C port on their PDU, let alone 4. And what if we want to mount it vertically in the back of the rack, instead of horizontally? What if we only have space for a 1U PDU, not 2U? I reckon a configurator similar to the OS console build-out one on the US version of the website would be kinda slick.
For Type A, "Bob's your uncle" setup, the DPU will not pull an IP via DHCP from my aggregation switch, and it stays on the default IP 192.168.1.20 even after factory reset. Anyone have this happen? The result is that I cannot adopt as the UDM Pro SE does not see the PDU to adopt. What am I missing?
It seems if I connect Port 21 on the PDU into an SFP port either 1G or 10G Ubiquiti SFP modules, it will not negotiate either in an aggregation switch or in the DMP SE. But fixed ports will in the DMP SE or the 16 port Lite connect no problem.
Get some multi-gig LAN and WAN ports on there and ill bite. As it sits, this PDU would just slow everything down for me and who the hell wants slower connections. We are in the multi-gig stratosphere these days. I understand that 10G is still more marketing hype than it is actual standard, but 2.5 isn't. So what's with the 1G ports Ubiquiti, especially for a "distribution" unit. Even if you have 1G from your isp, you wont get it running through this thing, because it leaves you no overhead. Bring me a PDU pro special addition and we are in business.

We use alot the snap one wattbox. We love it!
For a pro device, I'd expect more than 1Gps ports as well. The ports offer no value to me with this device and that's unfortunate.

Curious if you'd plug this into a UPS directly? If so, one would need quite the large UPS to support the overall power capability of this PDU.

Connecting this to a UPS will be interesting. It's basically all or none power. Won't be possible to prioritize certain devices.

Wattbox Is something I would take a look at. I wish the PDU be able to restart devices in a designated order.

The power cycling of the modem could be a bad think if your ISP pushes out a firmware update to the modem and it gets interrupted during that update.
Interesting. I have not used a modem in decades, have been on Fiber since 2005. But that is a very good use-case.

If you had a glass door on the front of you rack you could always put tent on it and then not have to worry about the lights at night.
Does it have any api access and/or command line access via ssh? in order to do your own grouping/controlling/scheduling.. for example, if it was plugged into a ups, and you have automation that detects when it's on/off battery, to then gracefully shutdown the device and/or configure the plug to be off. and once power is back on re-enable the plug(s)
Looks useful. Hard to see how this 2U device will cope with plug types in Europe, unless they switch to IEC C14 style socket. The price seems fair.

I was thinking the same, that one would need to have a pair, with dual-PSU (or RPS, if you prefer) devices plugging each into each, but then that $550 just for a pair of PDUs, before thinking about the UPS.
Any of UI’s redundancy products seem to be very poorly thought out and this appears to be no different.
Matrix with the backup power product and use A/B power.

No, the isp port on the back is simply a passthrough. meaning , you dont need to use it; you can simply plug the FE port into your core switch or router and manage it the same way you manage the rest of your unifi stack.

Future video suggestion: take a look at the new Internet Health feature on the UDMP dashboard. Mine shows high latency when I'm gaming on my 500/500 fiber connection which averages 6ms latency most other times. I'm wondering if Ubiquiti had inadvertently shone a light on the anemic routing capability of the UDMP with this feature.
In my case, the high latency spikes were driven by high CPU (around 70%), which is caused by a component of the Talk module (freeswitch -- even if Talk is not started), but is fixed in UniFi OS 1.12.24. My UDMP CPU is now running around
So they added a 2-port switch for the WAN connection. I see this often to "split" a single WAN connection to redundant firewalls when the ISP gives one handoff. Still, adds another point of failure. Granted, if the PSU source fails, you have more problems due to a lot of the unifi stuff I have encountered have single power inputs. Wonder what the longevity on these will look like compared to the likes of APC or Eaton.

The auto reboot of the modem is nice. However, if working remotely and there's poor Internet, not no Internet which would trigger the auto reboot, is there a manually selectable reboot option for each port? If you manually turn the port off to reboot the device, you can't turn it back on because you just lost your Internet access, so a reboot option would be needed. The recommendation is to usually power the device off for 30+ seconds before turning it back on. Does the auto reboot do this? If a manual reboot exists, does it do this?
I like it finally a cheaper managed PDU that isnt $700 for APC
Chris - Great video. I would suggest looking at the Wattbox which has great software and is feature rich from my experience. Every client Ubiquiti install I also put in a Wattbox which has saved me multiple times.
Modem reboot - are there any settings/limitations for this, like wait time? If the modem is getting a firmware update or the link is down there's no point in rebooting it constantly.
Just watched your show and notice that you switch off your server fans as they were too noisy. I have a similar setup and I use NOCTUA NF-A14 PWM fans which deliver the same air flow as the ones that you have at a fraction of the noise. Maybe worth a look.

Regarding the discrepancy/confusion with the Ethernet ports: is there any possibility that your Early Access hardware differs from the final, released hardware? There might have been changes.
The scheduling of ports is a big miss. The other thing I'm sad to see is the WAN ports are limited to gig, and not sfp for higher speeds. It would be nice if you were able to have two sets of AC inputs for different circuits.

Isn’t it dangerous that it would power cycle the modem automatically? What if the modem is doing a firmware update and it power cycled it since the internet went down?

The network ports are only GbE. Really wish they were at least 2.5GbE. The other functionality is awesome however.
1.07a @ 120v is 128.4w. Conversely, 90.97w @ 1.07a requires 85.02v at the receptacle. So that feature appears broken. Why does the uplink section have a power figure? Is it a PoE port?
Yeah that stuck out like a sore thumb to me as well. Either UBNT can't figure out simple power calculations or the device is busted already.
Looks more like capacitive load, so lots of reactive power. Switching PSUs are nutorious for having relatively high capacitive load at low load conditions compared to their real input power, unless they have decent power factor correction. Most Unifi/Ubiquiti equipment uses generic PSUs that dont have power factor correction, so thats most likely why you see these numbers, as in his test setup mostly Unifi Gear is connected to the PDU.
TLDR: You cant just do V x A with AC, the phase has to be taken into account, therefore real power in AC systems is V x A x cosine of phaseangle.
I can see a problem with the Modem Power Cycle that scares me. That is the Modem is in a middle of a firmware update and this cut the power to it. I would love to see a way that you could set a timer for it. Like if you lose internet wait X number of mins before rebooting the Modem. This would make me feel a ton better about turn this on in my home network.
The unit downloads the update package completely and then starts the update process, so a modem reboot would not interfere with the update process.

Great video, although I do have some questions, how does the USP determine if the internet connection goes down, if it is pinging an address can it be configured? Does it just use the uplink monitor in the UniFi controller or can it be set differently? and I’d love to know more about the WAN failover, I wonder if it could be used with pfSense, I assume not
I'd imagine since it's being managed by Unifi, the controller would be able to notify the PDU that the WAN connection is down. Just a guess.

Watbox are worth it if you can afford it. I enjoy the easy of use and that fact I can connect to OVRC to manage it is pretty cool. I have used it to reboot the router at my parents house as I used one for their min rack.

Unfortunately the ISP modem reset service is flawed and on my USP-Plug at least, it resets the modem often for no reason, and occasionally just turns off the plug and I have to manually turn it back on. So I've had to disable that "feature". Do you encounter this problem with the Plug, as well as with other devices like the UDM power port and SmartPower ports?
Are you sure that Lan port arrangement isn't just a lan pass-through to provide lightning protection/isolation from faults affecting the wan service cable - this is pretty typical for your average more expensive and larger power extender units - most have both LAN and RJ11 telephony ports, and others even have Coax for sattellite or TV pass-through. the fact you can connect more than 1 UDM is interesting, but may just be a hard wire split where the wan IP would be set within the UDM.
That is exactly what I was thinking. A hardware switched port that will switch the wan between the two outputs.. someone needs to disassemble and look at what is inside there.

What type of connector is on the mains power supply cord? I'm guessing that since total current draw is rated for 15A on 125VAC that it is the residential standard NEMA 5-15 plug and not the commerical/data center standard NEMA 5-20 or NEMA 5-30L plugs... Shame - it would be AWESOME to be able to slam on or more of these into the 5-30 receptacles on the back of a few of my large dc UPSs

Something I think Ubiquiti could offer: customisation. Think about it. Some users in professional settings may not have as many cables going from NEMA 5-15P to either hardwired in or an IEC 60320-spec connector. Some may simply have 60320 female to 60320 male. Most people won't have a need for a USB-C port on their PDU, let alone 4. And what if we want to mount it vertically in the back of the rack, instead of horizontally? What if we only have space for a 1U PDU, not 2U? I reckon a configurator similar to the OS console build-out one on the US version of the website would be kinda slick.

For Type A, "Bob's your uncle" setup, the DPU will not pull an IP via DHCP from my aggregation switch, and it stays on the default IP 192.168.1.20 even after factory reset. Anyone have this happen? The result is that I cannot adopt as the UDM Pro SE does not see the PDU to adopt. What am I missing?
It seems if I connect Port 21 on the PDU into an SFP port either 1G or 10G Ubiquiti SFP modules, it will not negotiate either in an aggregation switch or in the DMP SE. But fixed ports will in the DMP SE or the 16 port Lite connect no problem.
Does it have battery when losing power ?
Get some multi-gig LAN and WAN ports on there and ill bite. As it sits, this PDU would just slow everything down for me and who the hell wants slower connections. We are in the multi-gig stratosphere these days. I understand that 10G is still more marketing hype than it is actual standard, but 2.5 isn't. So what's with the 1G ports Ubiquiti, especially for a "distribution" unit. Even if you have 1G from your isp, you wont get it running through this thing, because it leaves you no overhead. Bring me a PDU pro special addition and we are in business.
