Wow! 🤯 Just posted about making it the American Origini 1st Anthem. We are equivalent and much larger than most other Nations. Its why so many police and other happenings 2 us.
Larry Blackmon is one of The Greatest and Very Best Frontmen of All Time. He is right up there with Ronald Isley, Maurice White and Philip Bailey, George Clinton, Lionel Richie,Frankie Beverly and James J.T. Taylor. No question about it man.
There was no other group that was as versatile as Cameo. They had that true soul, Urban Contemporary, R&B, Jazz, Funk, and some of the best love Ballard's ever created. On this track they show us how Socially Conscious Conscious they are. They are forever number 1 in my book
Ty Hunter hey! I would have to respectfully disagree with you on that point. I was born at the end of the 80's, so my view may not be as relevant as yours! I think EWF had some pretty powerful music and was ahead of their time back in the day. Honestly think they are still relevant now with all the chaos happening in the world now. I actually just "discovered" Cameo not long ago. When I was in college we used to play Neck all the time. I thought a rap group sang it. Then I took it upon myself to dig deeper and go on a hunt for the original artist. Low and behold, i found out it was Cameo! I was shocked and happy all at once. I was like "there's no way a rapper sang this! I like it too much." Lol I'm digressing now. Lol my parents listened to this type of music when I was a kid, so naturally I picked up their taste in music! I like Cameo, but I still think EWF is one of the greatest funk band of all time. What would really be awesome is if the two band did a collaboration! Lol
Ty Hunter I agree. The only other funk band that can come close to Cameo is Parliament and the slow jams put them over. But they were just as funky as Pfunk, especially when they were at their full complement at the beginning. Very Unsung.
you are spot on. Today's music is awful. Cameo are amazing. I can understand every word & there songs are just...mindblowing. Larry Blackmon's fashion sense pushed buttons but hey!!
"Gross injustices surround me from the highest levels of power and you say these are the people that I depend on for my survival" This hit me on a different level today.😥
"I'm just trying to be realistic, without being pessimistic." Cameo really dropped a message here; listen and receive the message. Skin I'm In- 2021- Relevant.
"Gross injustices surround me from the highest levels of power, and you say these are the people i depend on for my survival" lol...now that's a deep line..and so true.
My goodness. I hope they know what they did on this record. They really laid it all out on the line and I felt it. Soul, flavor and actually talkin' about something. This is indeed an underrated gem.
Candy, She's Strange, Single Life and Back n Forth were all the Cameo songs I heard growing up. Never even knew this song existed. This song fits right in to how America 🇺🇸 truly is and has always been ✊🏿
This song truly speaks to our current state of racial affairs in America. Sadly this song is 30 years old and we are still experiencing the same issues.
because God choose us read deuteronomy 7 6-8 we are his chosen to be above all people on earth but our forefather broke the laws learn and keep commandments all of them to break the curses he place on us ...we are israel scattered throughout earth
In my humble opinion the most socially relevant song Cameo ever did. Lyrical content is undeniable truth. Music production is from the razor's edge on point. It hits and cuts from every angle.💯💣💥🔥👏👏✌️
AWESOME song!! Larry was deep w/ the pen. He doesn't get the credit he deserves in that area. This song speaks VOLUMES to what's going on in the world TODAY .
This song speaking on what's going on today! History Repeats itself! Songs like this warned us in the 70s-90s! Today we are reviewing the meaning of the songs in the past after what's going on today!
I cannot stop listening to this song this morning! So deep and still rings true to this day! Jan.7 2021 "Gross injustices that surround me from the highest level above! And you say these are people I depend on for my survival!"
Forever #1 in my book, alongside some of the other Contemporary R&B artists that polished my ears as a kid into my teenage years... Alongside my grannies lovin' y'all...
I love cameo....I'm a drummer also I can't even say how much I watched and followed these guys. Stayed up late playing my drums in my mother's basement to every song....like summer school break if play from 11:00am -12:00pm at night sometime me and a good buddy he know who he is kk ;)
This was a great album released in 1988 I lost track of Cameo at this time but I was a big fan of the band when I was in high school back in the early 80s going to a few of there shows when they came to Charlotte N.C.....i know it was hard for soul bands to transition from the 70s funk to the 90s MUSIC industry....this is a song that makes you THINK....and that is always a good thing
When I was 5 years old, I had my father replay this song over and over on every road trip. I sang along to it. I understood it perfectly. The fact I had to understand it is what's wrong with society. But I'm glad for my understanding of it.
Wow. I listen to a lot of Jamaican dancehall, hip hop and classic funk. Every once in a while I just need to go back to some Cameo, usually Word Up, and remember my club days and and how much I loved them. For some reason today I remembered the song from the flip side.. " Skin I'm In" and wanted to check it out. And I'm crying. In 2021. I never realized how important this song was and how after all these years it could so relevant. In 2021, I'm just...crying. Cameo. ❤❤❤
Every time I see this video, there's a guy in it fighting with the police while the police were using their billy clubs reminds me of my father...The toughest man I ever knew!
When I think of all the great songs that Cameo has created, like Why Have I Lost You,Word Up, She's Strange, Hanging Downtown,Candy, Flirt,Single Life and Talking Out The Side Of Your Neck,Skin I'm In is arguably their most underrated song. This song is one of Cameo's very best songs and it does NOT get enough credit.
When I listen to skin I'm in it is a very constant reminder of those ancestors who paved the way for us to be treated fairly and equally. That time is still yet to come but with music like this to keep reminding us as black people to never give up on the struggle because we the Meek shall inherit the earth. Tupac sampled alot of their music I'm an 86 baby but I listen to alot these old school classics really had no choice uncles and grandfather were music masters blessed to grow up off this kind of music💯
This is one of my most important life-rules: Only judge people by their actions and nothing else. I believe in mutual respect and common decency and don't care what color your skin or your shirt has. Life is a lot better if we share it together peacefully and having a great time together while we're alive as humans. Great song btw :]
THE GREATEST OF ALL TIMES THE GOATS KING SINGERS SONGS SENSATIONAL BELOVED HANDSOME KINGS STILL FUNKKINGS SUPER SMOOTH MOVES GROOVE PARTYING GET DOWN LOTS OF LOVE CAMEO ROCKED THE MIC BACK IN THE THROWBACK DAYS AND NOW LORDS WILLING
Cameo is one of my all time favorite bands. Their whole act is nothing short of genius. I love these guys. Hopefully some day I look forward to not needing a song like this, but I love it anyway.
We as a peoples should embrace this song. It tells us everything of the last 50+ years of equality. There is no such thing.
One of the realist songs Cameo ever made. Still relevant till this day, even more than ever now.👊🏾👊🏾
Yessir 👊🏾👊🏾
Up there with secrets of time and is this the way
Yes indeed! It's amazing that this song was released 36 years ago.
@@jeep128 I would throw “Talkin' out the side of your neck” in there as well
This has become an HBCU Anthem at football games. 30 years and nothing has changed.
Wow! 🤯 Just posted about making it the American Origini 1st Anthem. We are equivalent and much larger than most other Nations. Its why so many police and other happenings 2 us.
Still hitting in 2024 for me. My kind of music!
This joint still hittin in 2023

RIGHT RIGHT 💪
I agree I saw him with his cup at a show best ever
This song never gets old. Old school funk can't nothing touch in.
There was no other group that was as versatile as Cameo. They had that true soul, Urban Contemporary, R&B, Jazz, Funk, and some of the best love Ballard's ever created. On this track they show us how Socially Conscious Conscious they are. They are forever number 1 in my book
+Ty Hunter agreed, Cameo was the only legitimate threat to The Almighty Parliament Funkadelic, but the one thing they had on P-funk was the slow jams.
Ty Hunter hey! I would have to respectfully disagree with you on that point. I was born at the end of the 80's, so my view may not be as relevant as yours! One of the Best Songs on the Planet go go Cameo
How true! Preach Cameo! 🤔
Song was before it’s time. Message is deep, can only imagine how they was probably opposed to release it.
2023 Still Relevant today my friends
One of there top songs production was tight
Cameo literally has created some of the most popular band songs to play in High school and Hbcu bands. Respect.
So true. My kids still want to keep Candy in the books lol
Southern U does this song justice every time they play it lol
@@sylentknight Yes sir!!!!! ...👍everybody was rocking it back in '88! MVSU Funk-Horn!
Yep, Skin, Candy, Neck, Early In The Morning, Word Up
literally my whole school loves this song, we play university of miamis version
This horn section is terrific and so complex. ..
I grew up on the Southern University Band edition, but the Howard version is arranged the same way the song was done by Cameo
I appreciate the version played by the Southern University Marching Band aka The Human Jukebox.
But the original horn section was just so wicked and wild. Nothing else ever came close
Dont know nuthin bout horns, but i do know its funky. Oh so funky
Yes! Also baselines
Its 2023 & this song was made some decades ago & its still relevant ! I love Cameo.

2019 and this is still relevant! Love Cameo! 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
You guys need a Netflix documentary
pac asked the producer to sample this bassline for against all odds, crazy how well it fits
A blast from the past....Against All Odds ;-) vintage music that can't be duplicated.
Talk about prophetic! This song is a classic and speaks volumes about present times
Hmmmm no. You're probably young its been happening continuously in Amerikkka for the past. 4 centuries
35 years since its original release and not a damn thing has changed. This video and song still, unfortunately, very relevant.
Actually this was released in 1988. I know because my Dad bought the album 😂
This was 1 of my favorite group in Junior high and High school my High school band played all of Cameo hits.
My goodness. I hope they know what they did on this record. They really laid it all out on the line and I felt it. Soul, flavor and actually talkin' about something. This is indeed an underrated gem.

Racism has been brought back to the forefront the bottle has been rubbed and the racism genie has been let out to reek havoc!
No one like Cameo exists today. Words no truer.
+Rolando Renteria And never will!

Upsetting to admit that that is very true my friend.

Absolutely a classic song! One of Cameos best of all time.
THIS IS THE ALLTIME GREATEST SONG EVER !
This song truly speaks to our current state of racial affairs in America. Sadly this song is 30 years old and we are still experiencing the same issues.
True
That's the only thing I don't like about it: it's still relevant, and probably always will be to some degree.

This song is deep!!! Larry body is amazing!!! An amazing song the group is a gift to us such what a catalogue!
I missed those days when about every uptempo song had a breakdown featuring the bass, followed up by drums and finished off by horns. Classic!
My favourite Cameo song of all time...
The opps was so great back then that you couldn't help but be Soul. Soul was not learned, it was inner.
One of dopest tracks ever by Cameo with a strong powerful message behind it!
I don't know about that.
