Haydn doesn’t really do ‘filler’ symphonies,* but what I would say is that of the 107** symphonies he did write: 65 are absolutely essential listening 41 are essential listening 1 is required listening (In order to rightfully claim you have heard all 107). Symphony 9 is not the 1 required listening. * Not entirely sure what is a ‘filler’ symphony. ** The 107 comprises: Symphonies 1-104 (Hob. I:1-104) The sinfonia to Le pescatrici (Hob. I:106) Symphony ‘A’ (Hob. I:107) Symphony ‘B’ (Hob. I:108) Note: The missing Hob. I:105 is the Sinfonia concertante which is not a symphony.
@@elaineblackhurst1509 How the mind changes, I adore Haydn's Symphony 9 now! Since leaving that comment I have probably listened to it 15 or so times. Like the others from this era its infectious and adorable! I was listening to this and blaming it for not being his later symphonies. Out of curiosity, which 1 do think is in you "required listening" category, I assume that would be your least favorite.
@@Shmookcakes The very early Symphony ‘A’ (Hob. I:107) written c.1759 whilst Haydn was employed by Count Morzin, is the only ‘required listening’ symphony; given the context of the very high bar set and met consistently by Haydn, whilst there is nothing wrong with it, it is his most ordinary, routine, and least original symphony out of the 107. As regards UA-cam viewing and listening, if you have not yet heard it, visit the Haydn 2032* channel and listen to Giovanni Antonini’s performance of Symphony 9 with Kammerorchester Basel - I cannot recommend it highly enough, indeed the whole series is outstanding. (The channel is also well worth visiting as there are a number of fascinating discussions in the comments from a number of us with serious knowledge on Haydn, a quality content not normally found in UA-cam comment sections; you may find it/them of interest). * The website is worth visiting as well.
Your Haydn symphonies series is great and my absolute favorite. I love all Haydn symphonies. Bach on sundays is great one too. I have never enough of good music.

One of Haydn's only "filler" symphonies in my opinion, still sounds lovely
