once you hear yamaha's crossplane inline-4 in person there's no other type of engine that can match the sound. deep & rumbly in low rpm, melodic and throaty in mid rpm and screaming like a demon on high rpm. perfection!

It's almost too smooth to describe as a shriek, and as good as it sounds it's not what I'm looking for. What I'm hearing from this bike is that initial crossplane rumble developing a secondary, much higher-pitched overtone as that rumble shifts to a consistent drone. It's something I've only ever heard from odd-firing engines at high RPM and even-firing engines with an X-pipe (Ryan Tuerk's Judd-powered Formula Supra is an excellent even-firing example). It's that secondary tone that I love, and it's incredibly hard to find vehicles that have it.
Aprilia V4 sounds even better in my opinion. Has the very deep rumble you mention and then screams even more beautiful in higher revs!! Especially with Austin Racing or SC Project Exhaust
Yamaha is now the only user of inline 4 engines in MotoGP, but I still like the sound of inline engines. The road to victory is far away now, but I believe that one day Yamaha will come back to win again.

They didn't come down from those sorts of RPMs until the Gen 6 car had its horsepower gutted, though the engines are still more than capable of those kinds of RPM if they ever decide to open them back up again.

It actually does from the 2000s back when they nearly rev to 9k rpm.
As an crossplane inline 4, it’s literally half of a crossplane V8 (one bank of it that is) which is what most nascars series use.

It's not the exhaust layout, Yamaha uses crossplane crankshaft design to mimic the characteristics of V4 while still being an Inline 4
i thought these winglet styles were banned, as they need to be integrated in to the bikes body
