Fast, fluent, natural, brilliant, humble, narrative, and confident.
The WINNER BRUCE!!!!Incredible.....I couldn't stop crying....OMG!!!!
❤️👍🏻WINNER !!! He will be WINNER of competition!!!👍🏻❤️
Just watching his technique is an other-worldly experience.
36:40 Variations in B flat major, Op. 2
he's perfect in every ways. speechless 👏
_”When Bruce Liu plays the piano he becomes the piano, you see, my friend”_
YES! Exactly!
The winner 🏆
Variations in B flat major, Op. 2 - great spirit of Mozart and Chopin in one - brilliant performance!
Bruce, the Variations you played proved that you were the definite champion in this competition.
Absolutely agree, he went beyond being very very good and actually showed me a side of Chopin I hadn't seen before, and that is what a real artist does.
I’ve heard several pianists played this variation and I still prefer Bruce Liu’s version, his playing moves my emotions!
I can listen to his performance for thousands times and never get bored dang!!! And I also notice he chose to play Chopin’s early works
He deserved to win this competition. Nice legato. A purist interpretation. Congratulations to Bruce Liu!
I’m by no means a professional pianist or a renowned judge, but Bruce has been my favorite pianist throughout this competition. I love the way he takes a musical breath after passages and phrases, he definitely knows what he’s doing. There’s something fresh yet brilliantly artistic about his music. He definitely brings new sounds to pieces that I haven’t heard of in many of Chopin’s pieces. He’s definitely my pick for the final.
Good taste. He just won the competition.
Let's go Bruce!
Acertou na mosca! haha
@@wildboar3 is
He is breathtaking the entire competition. Well prepared with a modern and personal take. Chopin d be so proud.
Truly the BEST. The judges got it right. 👍🏻 Congratulations Bruce! 🎉
March Funebre... simply WOW!! Poetry .. in a true sense. Bravissimo Maestro!
No wonder he is the winner of the 18th Chopin Piano Competition which just concluded. Listen to his 3rd (at the 3:02 mark) and 4th Mazurkas (at the 5:27 mark). They are absolutely sonic poetry, with a delicacy of touch, gradations of tonal dynamics and subtle nuances which he seemed to coax from the Fazioli piano so effortlessly. His technique is solid, but very much tied to the music -- that is, no show of virtuosity just for the heck of it. This is really sublime interpretation of Chopin. I haven't seen/heard a pianist so totally as one with his instrument as Bruce (Xiaoyu) Liu in this 3rd round of the Chopin Competition. Congratulations!!! 👏👏👏
Beautifully said!
Yes, totally agree

I am shocked in his third round. I was first attracted by the sonatas and knocked out with a variation of Don Giopanni. I realized it was a great winner!
This recital still boggles my mind!!! He played like inspired from the beginning to the end, not even taking breaks between Sonata movements. His left hand 18:15 😵 or his left hand gesture 18:40, or wiping sweat from forehead with his hand performed perfectly in tempo integrated with the whole musical performance. He's totally lost in music. The best storytelling ever! PASSIONATE EXTRAORDINARY UNFORGETTABLE
Sonata first movement tears my heart out of despair 😭😭💔 s c r e a m i n g
Lost in the music!
I love his smile 😃
He makes music come to life with an artistic vibrancy. He adroitly avoids any maudlin touch nor much false affectations.. His tone is fresh, true to his youthfulness. And his technique is superb and is always supportive of his artistic ideas.
I recommend that you listen to this with a metronome.
Spell-bounding final movement of op 35, absolute clarity and tonal control
Superb playing in all three rounds. A pianist of great intelligence in his individual approach. Marvelous his interpretation of the sonata in B flat minor.
the most musical musician Ive heard in years . Arrau would applaud this ! This guy has it all ! He might change the world and bring new audiences to classical musical so big is his personality. Armellini's Funeral March was much talked .I will never forget the sense she made (incredible vision I enjoyed her in that movement than almost any other pianist I've ever heard Rachmaninoff would have liked it too .His recording hasn't dimmed over the decades about and Bruce Liu's is magic from the start. Middle section glorious .The most thing and truly emotional engaging musician I've heard in decades . Sensitive , with the right temperament . Every phrase has depth and meaning ! His phrasings, impossibly alert pedalling , colorings , voicings ,attacks and touch everything has been considered
That's what you said . I am a new audience of classical music after I found him.
Wow... his Variations in B flat major Op2,
That’s totally awesome! He will be the winner!!
Only one word to describe the variations *"MAGICAL"*
What a superb pianist! My eyes were glued to the screen and I just wanted to hear more!!!!
Only a person with an extraordinary soul can play so beautifully, here musical talent is not enough. Thanks Bruce. You stay with us forever.
We can see the art moving through Xiaoyu. He is going to win, he’s too good. How do y’all wanna compete against him??? He’s the GOAT 🐐
Bruce Liu has Incredible sound, control, technique, precision of playing and expression are impressive.
Also, not to feel that he playing at competition. Very at ease, natural, purely performed interpretations pieces, one gets the impression you were listening to the studio recording.
Very true, he has terrific composure!
Yes!!! I feel the same way. He has such a natural musicality and charisma, never seems to force anything and boy, does he perform! I truly am impressed by him every time he plays!
There are times when he gives the impression of a small child running thru a field of flowers just for the sheer joy of running (or playing).
I've almost never had this impression from other pianists.
@@jwilliam2255 yes pure innocence and a heart of gold that makes his music sublime!!💜💙❤️
Hats off, gentlemen, a genius!
The are all winners, but he is No 1.
Yes!!!
I think he's probably the most excellent pianist I've ever heard. What a gift to be able to watch and listen to this magnificent music.❤
@@hollyavillella554yes totally agree about Bruce’s playing that makes him so unique among a bunch of talented pianists of his generation. I have been rewatching all his competition videos since 2021 and I never get bored of listening to him again and again.

BRUCE (XIAOYU) LIU -an artist of the highest class, an exceptional virtuoso of modern pianism!
Znakomicie
PERFECT!
Winner. No other contestant comes even close to what this man is able to achieve with his playing.
That "Paganini" variation was so effortless!
I also like Lee’s rendition. It’s a really delightful piece.
@@trifonovfan9819 He's more conventional. Bruce is more singular.
Absolutely.
As a professional pianist myself, I completely agree. His playing is so subtle and clear and has something very important which is called personality.
His interpretation already was next level, incredibly awesome!
February 2023 and stil returning here to listen to this wonderful first round recital ...thank you Bruce Xiaoyu Liu.
Me too! But I think this is the 3rd round?😊13/2/23.
When they announced him as the winner, I didn't understand (I had not heard his performances), so I came here to see. Now I understand. Bravo!
Same here man!
His interpretations and playing technique lead him a straight way to victory, I' m impressed!
Finally someone who didn’t show off just to impress instead of express his emotions. Congratulations Mr Bruce Liu.
his Funeral March really make me cry, you deserved to be the winner!
I watched his interview with Polish radio and he says that he hopes the conductor will be able to remember his ideas about the concerto. That made me really excited because I feel like if he really plays what he has in mind, he can be the obvious winner (I mean, let alone the audience, have you seen the faces of juries after his third stage?) No disrespect to other really talented pianists in the competition, they are all very good. I just feel like Bruce is in a position that he will be the one who will decide/shape his own faith (except competition politics, of course, who knows what will go down behind the curtains :))
In any case, I hope this will be a perfect step for his future (and hopefully very successful) career. As one of the commentators here said, no matter what, he is truly the star of this competition. Good luck for the final stage!!
The rubatos are so natural. One feels like you dont know where Bruce will go and it makes it inticing to listen to again and again. He seems to possess the technical and artistic freedom to do whatever what he wants, so his potential is sky high.
I agree!
🧨🇮🇷 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎹 👋👋👋Liu. México. 😂
Demasiado largo. 👋👋👋👋🇮🇷🎵🎵🎵. Exelente ❤️.
Mistrzostwo! Bruce zaczarowuje klawiaturę, fortepian śpiewa, tańczy, uśmiecha się, płacze, bawi....
Genialne ! Oprócz ciężkiej długoletniej pracy widać i słychać, że kompozycje Chopina sprawiają Brucowi czystą i niczym nie zakłóconą przyjemność. Tak gra GENIUSZ!
Bruce" performance is absolutely superb!!!
You put it so well in everything that I share the same view as you on Bruce Liu! He’s absolutely fabulous and so unique and mesmerizing in his playing! I like your using the saying “ I don’t care” and I think that’s a key factor in his playing that makes him play the music in his mature and intellectual way of playing. Brilliant pianist!
And he speaks Chinese,French and English fluently.
Very relaxed and natural player.
The one and only Bruce Lee at the piano. Thank you for your irresistible performance!
he made some progress in karatefinger technics😁
Ugandan Bruce Lee, we call him Bruce U.
If he plays the concerto well, he should win!
He’s been one of the best in every round!
Bravo!
BRUCE LEE 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣
“Be like water” 👏👏👏👏👏
A young pianist of the first rank who will be one of the great interpreters of Chopin and other romantic composers of his generation. A privilege to hear him play. I wish him a long, successful and fulfilling career as an international concert artist.
Legendary. I wish they had shown the complete ovation for him at the end. The audience was standing and clapping for ages.
Yes. I was there and heard it live. I also stood and clapped :)
Hi Chancey Wigglesworth!
I totally agree with you on Bruce Lui, he’s such a phenomenal pianist and his playing affected my whole being! Also, I noted your name and wondered if you are related to Smith Wigglesworth by any chance?🤔
We love Bruce very much in Poland. We look forward to each of his performances, and he always receives a standing ovation. Greetings from Warsaw.

This artist is so absorbing -
It’s as though he is creating each piece- sincere renditions
Bruce's playing is absolutely mesmerizing from the beginning to the end, especially the final movement. Please win this competition!
Now that we know Bruce won the competition, I had a chance to listen to the same concerto played by Martha Argerich in the same hall 5 years ago. Absolutely I prefer the young, fresh dynamism of Bruce's playing with his signature crispness. Bravo Bruce! You will have a great future.
@@florianbraig4296 Martha Argerich won the competition in 1970 not 5 years ago, my dear!😄
I’m a huge fan of Argerich. But Bruce played it even better than her!
The most complete pianist I’ve seen in years!
He should win this!
😍😍😍
He will win!
Onward to Victory!
👏👏👏👏👏
For me , Liu plays better than Chopin! He plays Fazioli.
Vinci tu Bruce...sei bravissimo. Sisi
Three geniuses! Mozart, Chopin and Bruce Liu !!!!
And Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Puccini, and Wagner!
And Aimi, the other strong contender for the grand prize imho.
Kkk
I have no musical knowledge whatsoever but I'm Polish and I've heard Chopin's Funeral March like gazillion times, so it became the most banal piece with no surprising points... And then yesterday Bruce Liu played it and somehow turned it into a whole different experience that I haven't expected at all. I was truly moved. Fingers crossed for the big final now!
If we are talking about Funeral March, my favorite is Alexander Gadjev. His interpretation was more heartcatchig, for me, than Bruce Liu. I could say that is like from crying woman point of view. Bruces version was more powerfull, like Imperial March. I could say that is like from angry man with tightened fists point of view. And that soud of Fazioli piano bases...
yes, he manages to squeeze the extra ff and then transition to the p. tbf the fazioli is a phenomenal instrument of tonal and dynamic changes
Bruce has conquered me.
After listening to everyone in the last 3 stages, I am convinced he is the best of the best.
It took more than just his enthralling funeral march to convince me.
Liu was stellar in all 3 rounds.
From his Scherzo in E , his etude op. 10/4, his Ballade, the marzurkas, his waltzes, to his B- minor sonata.
He is worthy of following the long list of legendary winners.
From Pollini, to Argerich, to Zimerman to Cho.
Bravissimo! 👏👏👏👏👏
@@tonytony8747 i think he's great but he needs to watch being too dramatic. he's not but close, stephan xie is melodramatic and he's out. overall, bruce is in contention for a top 6 or even 4 placing but i think aimi is ahead
I feel Liu had a perfect balance of musicality, drama and artistry in his Scherzo and sonata - along with uncanny dexterity and dynamic range.
He has everything needed to win.
IMO, it’s Aimi who slightly overdid the drama in a few of her preludes.
HOLY.. the last variations made me doubt my ears like “Wait, what?” and replay it. He has complete control of literally every note on the sheet music.
Not a single note is out of his control, but it is so natural as if nothing was intended. This coexistence is just.. wow. Looking forward to his final.
Maravillosa performance
@@cristinavelazcoamorin511 absolutely agreeing with you! This man moves my whole being when I hear him play sometimes to tears! It’s so special and unique!!
Bravissimisimo!
there are so many truly great pianists on the world circuit today, but bruce would be a welcome addition...there's no-one quite like him...his voice is unique...kudos to the judges of this edition of the Chopin Competition for recognizing it...
What the hell, i have not heard of him all competition, everyone was saying that Aimi and Nehring are the best and we know how they finished, but this guy is absolute miracle. Period.
Aimi is more famous, and so is Sorita and Nehring. Bruce came as an underdog. He actually lost to Nehring in 2019 at the Rubinstein competition. I don't like Nehring's playing at all. Some person said he seems to play for the jury, not the audience and I completely agree. Bruce, otherwise, blew my mind since his first state. I knew he was the winner. Simply outstanding!
@@Thiago-px9ev I agree. Nehring's third round was underwhelming. I assume Aimi and Nehring were popular because they were finalists in the last Chopin Competition. Bruce's third round absolutely blew everyone else out of the water by a considerable margin. His playing was filled with clarity, spontaneity, and personality!
His sonata is profoundly superb. I really think that he deserves the special prize for sonata. He is always conveying something to his audience through the flowing notes… you can catch his reflection and meditation in his music…
Bruce, such brilliance ... I have tears in my eyes and joy in my heart. Your interpretation is magnificent.
You really deserved the first prize, Bruce Xiaoyu Liu!
My warmest congratulations!
You have a great future ahead of you!
I listened to his op.2 variation almost everyday. Sometimes it made me laugh, someday it made me tear up. I had not been shaken so strongly by a live performance like this for very long time.
same i've listened to the same performances for more than 50 times already. it never gets old and is always refreshing for some reason.
Bravo !!
bruce liu’s funeral march ❤️ i felt like i was really walking down a funeral procession 😳❣️ it was hauntingly beautiful ❣️ all his precious hard-earned sweat made it look like tears were pouring down his face ❤️. it was just magnificent ❣️
total agree, i think all jurors and audience like this part a lot
He was sweating profusely!😄😅 The other pianist who sweats a lot is Daniil Trifonov, both are great pianists!😄
This playing is genuine perfection! Such majestic technique and maturity with each phrase...how you make the right hand sing in perfect balance with the left. Your teachers should also be congratulated, for they have moulded a next level prodigy to the world! I shall be watching for you, Bruce! Congratulations
Bravo! 👏👏👏 Bruce Lui is the champion of the world! 🎉🥂
So much variation in his sound, like a box of chocolates. 1st prize well deserved.
CONGRATS to the 18th Chopin Competition Winner!!!
Such phenomenal pianist.
Amazing 👏👏👏
Bruce has supprised me from stages to stages. In 2nd round he performed those kind of happy repertoires with the contented face I was curious how he would make it to a piece with dull color as funeral march, but to all my amaze, he did bring a damn absolute sadness of a funeral with all of his very grave attitude and posture. Well thats obssessing that made him stand out from other candidates. Im happy he is in the final now. 💐🌈🌟
Amazing array of colors and beautiful tones, lovely endings. He’s the only one that can give me wave after wave of goosebumps right now. Definitely my pick!
I don't think I've ever heard mazurkas played with such attention to detail. Each one is a narrative, but never loses its form.
Totally agree, I wonder why he wasn’t awarded for the best Mazurka category!

We know we have a genius when not everyone can catch this guy's genius at first sight. He shocked the audience. He shocked the jury. He shocked me with his first round performance and every other performance since then. Yet, many who can't understand his approach seems to dislike the result. That's the genius sign. You have to polarize in order to remain fresh. Both Liu and Garcia did that. I'm sorry for those who aren't able to understand his playing, but the jury wasn't wrong at all. In fact, for me that's the best result in years.
I agree that he shocked everybody. And some liked that feeling, some didn’t. But I feel like everybody is trying to figure out how to fit him in classical world and what he will bring into it. I would say he will definitely bring (in addition to his immense talent , of course) a certain charisma and character. Both on and off stage. I saw this more clearly when he refused to go stage a second time after the final stage, saying that because this is a competition not a concert, it would be unfair to other contestants. Even though some others went a second time and a few ones hoped for the call, which is okay of course. But he didn’t bend to that temptation and i can see a strong character there that reflects to his artistry which is one of the certain qualities of a true star. So i think (I hope) he will make his own way and name in music scene with his style. There always be some people who will not like it but as Bruce himself said, “people will like you, and some others don’t so I will be myself.”
@@ge.m6239 I couldn't agree more. Although I wished him to come back to the stage cause even the conductor called him, now after reading your comment I changed my mind. He was absolutely polite about it, very down to earth, I think he wasn't even believing in what was happening to him. That's one of the biggest ovation in the history of this competition, maybe even the biggest, but he choosed to stay humble and patient to not outdraw the other contestants. Finally, he had his moment on the winner's concert. I can't wait to hear more from him, personally I would like to hear an entire Chopin album with other pieces that he didn't play. Would be a great debut!
I agree... It is hard to convince everybody when a person's interpretation is so unique, playing with fire and unconventional (or less stereotypical) but to those who are convinced will be superbly impressed. He was not my favourite from his first and second stage performances but what he demonstrated from his op.2 here is simply out of the world... I think he is a very intelligent person in order to make such acute changes in different passages.
@@pakyukwokalex3683 Absolutely! Me, for instance, I don't listen to Zimerman. Even though he's a genius and regarded as Chopin's greatest interpreter of the modern time, I just don't match with his playing, although I would never deny his excellence. It's a matter of taste, I'd rather listen to older masters such as Guiomar Novaes- my very favorite- than him. By the way, I was pretty sure I was your subscriber! I really enjoy your playing and it's nice to read such comments from an accomplished pianist like you.
@@Thiago-px9ev Yes, i would have liked him to go again and shower with applause and appreciation and confused when he didn’t. But when I listened his reason behind it, I kind of liked and appreciated it. He didn’t do it to be rude but being thoughtful and respectful to other contestants. And he explained it like the most normal thing, no big deal. But of course the audience made him closed the gap to call him gazillion times at yesterday’s gala!😆 I think same thing will happen tonight and tomorrow and his hundreds of concerts following that. On Twitter, i read that a Polish composer (Joanna Nazarowa, i think) even claimed that he will earn more than the Beatles or Pavarotti!! 😃 I don’t think it will go that far but he gives that impression to people, so it is a good example peoples excitement about him, i think. People just can’t get enough of him, it is amazing to witness really.
I can see why he won the competition. Dynamic, very smooth transition from soft to loud keys or between staccato and slurs using pedal; very energetic and in absolute control- technically he seemed to be able to play faster than his opponents at very loud volume when necessary without any rough edges as all the notes are smoothly connected. physically he seems to have noticeably greater endurance and stronger and faster fingers than other finalists, which allows him to play aggressively at full throttle until the very end.
❤️ I listened to Bruce Liu the first time in Poland, the 17th Chopin Competition 2015. It was special.
❤️ Congratulations to Bruce Liu, the 🏆 Winner of the 18th Chopin Competition. 💕🙏 from California 🇺🇸

Balsam dla duszy ...dociera do wszystkich jej zakamarków. 🎶🎼🎹
No need, just let your heart takes over and enjoy!😊
the variation performance is simply too stunning to be ignored and therefore got him the first prize I believe. Félicitation Xiaoyu!

Ohhhh! THE wonderful “Variations in B Flat Major op 2” to end….36 mins of such joy! It is my very favourite of Chopin’s because I adore ballet as well as Chopin’s music, and this is used for the Royal Ballet’s “Month in the Country”, which is such an amazing ballet by Frederick Ashton he choreographed in the 1980s on Lynn Seymour and Anthony Dowell. I last saw it at the Royal Opera House in London for my 80th birthday treat in 2019.
