Evolution 36 update 3
This is the 4th video in my series on the Evolution .36 stunt engine. This flight displays one of my re-timed Evolution .36s on my new profile. This plane was named, Toot'r, as it is a scratch built Tutor with a 50" wingspan and built-up tail feathers at 24% of the wing. I have been pleased with the engine rework and continue to play with props. This flight the engine is turning a 10.5 x 4.5 APC (10500 rpm at launch). Fuel is 10% nitro, 22% oil (half castor). Lot's of flight bobbles as this is only my 7th pattern with this new plane.

Half A Scale flights at the 19th Annual "This is Only a Hobby" contest
Переглядів 71210 років тому
Bill Smith's winning flight with his 1/2A profile scale Grumman Skyrocket. Bill's Skyrocket is powered by 2 Wen Mac Mk II engines. Also shown is the final attempt at flying my He219 at the contest. Bill Smith and Chris Rud are pitting for me. I made the fuel tanks too small so I ended up using an electric starter and Chris kept topping off the fuel tanks so I could get 10 laps in! I have since ...
First Profile Scale Flights

The first flights of Bill Smith's Grumman 'Skyrocket' and Fred Krueger's He219 'Uhu', both 1/2A profile C/L models. Bill's model is powered with Wen Mac Mk II engines and Fred's with a Wen Mac Mk XII and a Testors McCoy .049. Bill's flight was fairly uneventful. Fred's flight was entertaining with the outboard engine leaning out just as Bill released the model, resulting in a series of ground l...
Evolution .36 Update 2

I have been working with the Evolution .36 C/L engine on and off for about 4 years, with limited success, but just enough to encourage me to swap a ST34 for a 2nd Evolution. I had tried my own venturis, various prop loads, fuel mixtures, decompression and glow plugs with some occasional success, only to find the engine to be inconsistent. This Summer I finally decided to check the cylinder port...

Wen Mac Plug Tests
Переглядів 3,1 тис.10 років тому
Over a couple years, I purchased 8 Wen Mac Mk XII, Mk XIII and Testors/McCoy .049 engines from eBay suppliers and at swap meets. Many of the 'Rotomatic' starters were broken, plus the starters are all steel and add considerable weight to the engine. Given these factors I removed the starter assemblies and installed Cox thrust plates. These engines have been out of production for a long time, so...
PAW 149 in flight

My modified Brodak 'Jr. Lightning Streak' powered by a PAW 1.49BR (single ball bearing) diesel. Fuel is Coopers (30% ether); prop is a 7x4 Tornado. I just put this back in service after a long storage period. I stopped after the vertical 8's as I was not sure how much fuel I had remaining. On the last flight, I attempted the entire pattern and had to bail out of the hourglass when the engine sp...
PAW 40 bench running

Bench running my PAW 40TBR which I purchased about 10 years ago. I had about an hour of bench running (10 years ago) on this engine when I tore it down to 'decoke' it. I started construction of a 'Freebird 40' (Tony Eiflaender's design) about the time I purchased the engine. I may resume this project later this year. The fuel mix (Coopers) may not be optimal for this engine. I will mix some at ...
Bill Smith's Wen Mac powered modified 'Firebaby'
Переглядів 1,7 тис.11 років тому
Bill's modified 'Firebaby' powered by a Wen Mac Mk III. Bill shortened the front end to handle the extra weight from the Wen Mac rotomatic starter. The plane was built light as Bill wanted to be able to do basic stunts with the Wen Mac powering the plane. He also used a vintage Tornado presswood 6x3 prop. Fuel is SIG 25% Champion. Line length is 28 feet of 'spider wire'.
Evolution 36 Update
Переглядів 2,2 тис.12 років тому
Further development of my Evolution .36. Modifications: 0.160" dia. true venturi with sprinkler; decompressed with 0.034" head shims; Merlin 2011 plug; 11x4 Tornado prop; 10-22 fuel. It probably could use a small tank adjustment to equalize the run. The engine is mounted side-winder on an ARF Primary Force. I need to do further testing with props, compression and mounted in a full-fuse airplane.
Fred's Firebaby 1st Flight
Переглядів 2,1 тис.12 років тому
1st flight with my Firebaby replica. A plastic fuselage Firebaby was my very first powered airplane (1957). It was powered by a Thimble Drome 'Babe Bee". This replica was made by tracing the parts of a plastic fuselage Firebay and constructing the fuselage of balsa and plywood. The wing is laminated for stiffness (no dihedral or camber). The engine is a late '50s Baby Bee (purchased new at a sw...

Tucker and Aerotiger
Переглядів 72012 років тому
Aerotiger .36 on my Tucker Special. Not the greatest pattern, but I wanted to show how this well regarded stunt engine performs. There are no posted videos of Aeroproduct's engines so I thought this might be a worthwhile posting. BTW, the muffler is a tube style supplied by Randy Smith, with a rubber angled extension on the outlet. I want to increase the lap times a bit. I can try richening it ...

Taken apart and cleaned for what reason. Only if tent pegged would one think of doing that. Runs sweetly when warmed up and set correctly.
Thank you very much for such an informative video and tremendous flight demo. The engine mods, the plane plus your piloting skills were all in perfect sync.
Thank you! Check out the Update 3 video running the #2 engine which for some reason runs even better. ua-cam.com/video/E4KQXMlpiiI/v-deo.html&lc=UgwnxZoxbKA9eiDO4Jt4AaABAg
Вспомнил наше детство золотое -эпоху кордовых авиамоделей ,когда ещё не было RC-моделей !👽👍
Sounds like a Fox 35 running right at the 2-4 break.
It ran like this on the bench, but I was unable to get an acceptable run in the air. I tried various prop loads. I think the timing was too radical for a stunt run.
Yes nice model ya have there mate great flight too
Thank you. I haven’t flown that model in a while. It has some hanger rash. It is a nice flying model and the engine is sweet. This Summer I was having issues with my diesel fuel. Pre-mixed diesel fuel is unavailable in the US, so I mix my own using JD starting fluid (80% ether). It worked in previous years. I’ll try a fresh mix next Summer. Again, thanks for the comments.
@@frederickkrueger783 No worries mate hope she runs again , sure like here in Ireland can only get nitro , no chance of diesel mix here good flights 🤙
@@homienat3374 I'm in Australia, but I believe you can get "Model Technics D1000" diesel fuel in the UK.
@@dingalarmg'day mate, im a ozzie living in Ireland for near 20 years thanks for tip ,but im not sure if it can be sent from England to here but will look into this, thanks
@@homienat3374 G'day! 🙂 No worries. Good luck!
With the exception to the cowling on the inside, the Brodak remains me of Carl Goldberg's Wittman Buster, a plane I build back in the earl 70s.
You can’t beat a PAW !
The engines tone is so steady, absolutely no surging you truly are the engine whisperer
Try a bt100
I would like to buy your bike. Please contact me.
Sorry, this sold 10 years ago; shortly after I posted the video.
Has anybody found a place that sells kevlar replacement belts since Golden Eagle closed down?
i have the same engine Tecumseh 2 cycle TVXL840 on my DR Trimmer mower runs good lots of power through weeds but this engine parts are hard to find i tell you good video by the way.
A very enjoyable demo. The PAW certainly runs sweetly. I could not afford one at a kid in the 60s. Bought a 2.5 BR version in 1980. It's never been run. Have just spent a little time reviewing availability of the ingredients for the diesel fuel. I've only just realised that PAW are still trading. It's maybe time to get my grandchildren into control line flying wing combat... At least they would have to hug each other instead of fighting :-)
Diethyl Ether is extremely hard to find in the US. I think there are a couple of fuel companies in the UK that still blend model diesel fuel. I don't know what the team race folks do, but most of us here use John Deere starting fluid. Kerosene and castor oil are fairly easy to obtain and cetane booter can be purchased at truck stops.
I have always liked airplanes. I got my first flying model airplane when I was about 10. It was a Carl Goldberg (I think) "Fire Baby" with a 0.49 engine, "U" control of course. Neither my dad nor I knew anything about gas models.. this was about 1957. So the hobby shop where we bought it in Monroe, Louisiana gave us the name of a kid who did and we went to his house and he helped us build it. It didn't take long since it was a "profile" model meaning the fuselage was 2 dimensional basically being a flat stick of balsa wood, the wings and tail were too. The kid showed us how to start and fly it and then my dad tried. It went UP and then DOWN. It survived the crash but it took a beating before I figured it out. It moved very fast and you got dizzy quickly. I took up model airplanes again in the 60's when I was in the Marine Corps and lived in San Diego. The local Navy base had a great hobby shop and you could buy kits for 2 dollars and engines (K&B .35's) for $7. I became fairly proficient at flying them. Then in the 80's I came back to the hobby but now it was radio controlled, and I built some nice BIG models, some from kits and some from plans and flew them for a few years. Now it's electric motors etc., etc. and everything costs a fortune but I'm not up to that anymore. I'm going on 75 and my Harley's and old Cushman motor scooters keep my busy.
Tom; thanks for the story! I received help from our local HS priciple, who maintained a small hobby shop in his home. This was in a small town in Wisconsin (Horicon). I'm 75 today and still doing this as one of my hobby interests. Check out some of my other videos.
Exelente trabajo mecánico para UC
Gracias, Senor
Avezado Piloto!!!!!!?
Hermoso ,modelo y motor un lujo Saludos desde Argentina!!!

Rotate the engine 45 deg forward to stand that tank up and you get all the fuel
Have you done a speed check? Just curious.
Why ?

Sir what is the max air temp for this engine
Unknown. Also this engine is no longer available. 1cc versions are sold by NV engines.
Ha ha - This engine looks so much the same yet different from the ones l made in the late 50's and early 60's when working with Gig, I still have one of the very first experimental 19's and 2.5 plus an early scheurle ported 2.5
I worked with Gig in the 1950's-60's and made the first of the 1.49's, then the 2.50 and experimented with the 19 (3.25) - l still have the first of the 2.50s and 19s, makes them 60 years old, l also have one of the early scherle ported 2.50 l flew A And 1/2 combat - the early 1.49s suffered frequent broken conrods - my engines seriously modified turning a 7x6 nylon prop could over rev - l still have a lot of motors, mainly diesels
Thank you for the feedback and history. Here's another of my videos with a PAW.19Br: ua-cam.com/video/egO-So_F8bY/v-deo.html
Wow flicking it with bare fingers!!! Now thats experience. Great to see these Macclesfield born engines all over the world.
Good job. Same as my: ua-cam.com/video/Yp4xoLMOEMY/v-deo.html
Loud and slow.... terrible....I'm sorry
It's a bicycle. You don't want to go any faster. Trust me. Noise is dependent on the engine from Golden Eagle. Anyway, I ride a 150cc Buddy scooter now.

I have both mowers as well. The Tecumseh I have has variable throttle speed though. I currently need a carbuerator bowl nut and washer {jet} for mine and parts for the old 2 cycle Tecumseh hard to obtain no luck yet. As for my 6.5 Dura Force Lawnboy working mint. I'd keep those mowers if You haven't flipped them? Both 2 cycle engines the last of a dying breed and rare now
I still have them both. BTW, I added a throttle cable to it the 1st year I owned it I just replaced the float needle and seat on the Tecumseh. It runs like a watch. Have you tried 'Jackssmallengines.com'? I do have a fondness for 2-stroke lawn and garden equipment.....simple and no oil changes.
Hi, I had this engine in a Twister ... it lasted 150 starts. then a small compression and a large clearance on the pivot pin ...
Strange. These seem to be very well made. I have 3 of these, 2 with a lot of time on them. What fuel are you using? I don't like to run less than 20% oil (1/2 castor) and am currently running 22% oil. If you run low oil or no castor in your fuel you are risking damaging the engine.
@@frederickkrueger783 hi, twenty Castor ,, now i use ASP to.jr much better quality engine but not even evo.a asp are no longer Chinese factories, the end .... I see new SH engines ,,, but I would not buy another engine than OS Max or Enya ....
Jan Novak I also have some ASP engines. I agree on their quality. Unfortunately OS does not make very many engines these days and Enya are hard to find. I may try a SH soon. I do have a couple OS46LA engines. One is in my Vector 40. The 46LA is an excellent stunt engine but no longer made
Wow super nice engine!
Lines length / thickness used please ? Excellent video.
Never question a cl pilot who fly’s this well! Especially over concrete! Very good!
What length / thickness lines are you flying this model with ? I would guess: .012" thickness and around 52' feet ? Also, have you tried to put an 8x4 prop on that engine ?
Why ?
Many thanks Fred. I live in Africa and I forget you guys have winter hibernation seasons. Good luck for the Summer. Keep well. Regards Woody.
Hi Fred...what a lovely plane. I have a brand new PAW 1.49 which is looking for a plane. I had an idea to take a jr flite streak wing and create my own fuselage tips stabiliser and fin much like what you have done here looking at the other comments. Quick question. ..what is the tail moment roughly from wing trailing edge to elevator hinge line roughly on your model if you don't mind me asking? I also love your silkspan and dope finish. Great job man. Well done!!
Thanks!. Unfortunately the plane is currently in storage in my garage attic. Looking at a scan of the plans with my sketches on fuse, I believe I used the stock fuse material and added a turtle deck and changed the vertical fin shape. The elevator LE to the wing TE (not the fixed flap) is approx. 8.5". Hope that helps. Good luck with yours. Check out my PAW .19 powered Ringmaster S-1. ua-cam.com/video/egO-So_F8bY/v-deo.html
Your idle speed sounds way too high. Golden Eagle sells a quality kit though, that's easy to build. I had a leaky intake tube on my 49cc Grubbee that required replacement , but she's still going strong after 10 years:)-John in Texas
its 2019 october i have a very fresh as new something different A FULL SUSPENSION mountainbike not a hardtail built n converted with a new 4stroke kit and for sale im in ireland. truthfully thease are a max 10 stone load bike more for a kid for some fun or someone light not great for an adult
Very high confidence level flying over concrete. I was always afraid I would crash and destroy and engine not to mention the whole plane.
Super ! vraiment sympa ce modèle !
BEAUTIFUL model... BEAUTIFUL flying 👍👍👍 So nice to look and hear an old diesel engine at work 💖 Thanks so very much for sharing this with us fans of CL models!
Here's my PAW .19BR powered Ringmaster: ua-cam.com/video/egO-So_F8bY/v-deo.html
Bloody nice plane mate & that diesel magic great flying 👍🙂
C/l with diesels is a must for me, the sounds like music...
Good engine, neat model, nice flight and excellent power run. But, WHY do control line models HAVE to be Profile..? And why talk "Tail Feathers" when you can just say "Tail"...? All this is a conspiracy to make C/L flying the poor relation, I say. Why is it so hard to build a nice full-bodied stunt ship, and to take more pride in it....? PS.. And how exactly is the Evo 36 re-timed - to what..?
ua-cam.com/video/E4KQXMlpiiI/v-deo.html Peter: The description in this video covers the reasons for the engine re-timing. I don't always build profile models. I have a couple full-fuse models under construction.
RC has profile models too... 3D... profile models have their place.
Wow.. That's a madly powerful 1.49 diesel. Wish I'd had something that strong when I started flying C/L in 1953. Our 1.5cc engines then were barely able to get off the ground. Great stuff - I do prefer "Non Profile" models though. Thanks for the effort..!
The PAW 1.49Br is quite a potent little engine. That airplane was based on a plane designed for a 2.5cc glow. Unfortunately, we seem to have developed a love of profiles here in the U.S. (simplicity I guess). I have a PAW .8cc powered full-fuse stunter of my own design. The engine is not cowled however (fuse stopped at the firewall), but I thought I could form a cowl from aluminum. I fly mostly glows, but get the 'diesel bug' frequently'. Check out my PAW .19 powered Ringmaster (sorry another profile!): ua-cam.com/video/egO-So_F8bY/v-deo.html
Oh my!!! A CL plane with a diesel engine !!! Feels like I am 14 years old again ! :D
Ringmaster wing similarity....
I've had a lot of paw motors in my time, great to use , but damn hard start in very cold weather. 🙄
I had a 2.5 and it started easily, I found the 1.5 could be a bit temperamental. Very powerful engines, I loved them.
Heres a tip for you, dont yank on your pully or thro time your pully will not crab the righ way, theres plastic grabers that will go out in time. Pull it slowly untile it grabs then pull start fast. It will save your pull start in the long run.
Why you gotta make Profile Models, ay...? They are cheap and they look cheap, however well they fly.
