Tonight my 12-year-old son sang this song softly to me while we were in the car, and in the end he told me... I love Martin Luther King but especially you... and whenever I listen to it, Dad will think of both of us … (We live for these moments that simply appear unannounced but we will never forget)
I'm a hardcore U2 fan and usually not a fan of cover songs. However, this is an exception. It is a beautiful version... hopefully iTunes sell it, I'm going to check it out.
Damn. He can sing. One more in the name of love. It was like dream come true. I was searching for a toned down version of U2 songs that I found John Legend's name. I was thrilled.
Bono had to be bursting with "Pride" with this awesome rendition. So am I as a follower of the philosophies of the martyr equality, peace, love, and human rights the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Great job Mr. Legend!
This song, especially this version, this voice brings me to a place of such emotion for The fight, for Martin, for those we lost and for the fight that is happening now. Thank you MLK and all in the moment who made it happen on the daily. Vote
My twin brother and I were born in Detroit a week after #MLK was murdered. Our mother thought, “What kind of world am I bringing these babies into?” I remain an unrepentant social justice warrior. I’ll never stop fighting for and speaking up for those brothers and sisters who are repressed. This is what the legacy of #DrMartinLutherKingJr means to me.
If you can't fly, run. If you can't run, walk. If you can't walk, crawl. But by all means keep moving----that is such a serious truth about surviving this world I have no words to describe it's honesty
I so agree, it's like you sense something bigger than life itself happening, you don't know what it is but you just feel it and this song is so poignant at a time when we are celebrating Martin Luther King Jr's day today and then the innaugration of Barack Obama and the massive movement of a people - it comes around once in a lifetime and I'm happy to be in the moment. U2 wrote this song back in 1984and its so relevant today, beautiful words, beautiful song. Peace
Martin Luther King Jr. there is no words to define the stance he & many took up for the unserved, the poor, the voiceless, being a part of Gen Y his lessions are and will always be relevant to me b/c in order to perfect what we know is right, justice and humane we have to start with the core aspect of "Love". MLK love thy neighbor as thyself & that is the reason his lessions live on. This song is so poignant, beautiful thank you John Legend & many others who have sang this song. MLK = LOVE.PEACE!!
This was so beautiful...I love covers like this. He did such justice to this song. I love it just as much as the original. I cried, this was so pretty. Beautiful job.
+Leslie An Epic song by both U2 and John Legend. But this rendition just touches something inside you though. I think it's the purity of a vocals with a single instrument accompaniment.
katykatfandesmetal I know,I watch U2 sang the song at the Lincoln Memorial on HBO & it brought tears to my eyes b/c of the relevance of that song with what happened today for The U.S.A. (Pres. Obama)& the World Community. Its like renewing of a nation and we hope the world community will accept the apology of what happpen the last 8 yrs b/c it wasn't a representaion of the people of the U.S.A MLK is one of my heroes as well & I wish he was alive to see the Civil Rights ERA was not invane. Peace
@mdelandro The original U2 version is on "The Unforgettable Fire" (1984) and this version is on "Yes We Can: Voices of a Grassroots Movement" by Various Artists (2009) - iTunes Store has this version as an individual purchase, on Amazon MP3 it's "album only."
It makes sense considering the line "Early morning, April 4 Shot rings out in the Memphis sky Free at last, they took your life They could not take your pride" Is about King's assassination. Furthermore how does U2 goes from writing something great like that to "Get on your boots"
Alot of ppl forget wat life is about. Sharing, helping others, and treating others the way u want to b treated. Back in the old days, if u were black, u hv to do things the way u dont want to do it, i mean like, in a bad way. We all hv a purpose in lufe, and thts y GOD made us. Not to kill, not to hate, but to love. Try to understand tht if u dont like someone,( i know we all do) keep it to urself. Did u c tht Martin Luther King was shot? Thts called hatred. We r not supposed to kill aomebody j
What a great man... This song really does him justice. His charisma comes across even just from the few quotes in the video. Pity he had to die like that :S
@martymcfett I actually despise Obama, but i'm a huge fan of John Legend and the wonderful music he makes. i'm also a fan of MLK, who is by far a better leader, and this song was meant to remember him, not a for a political campaign.
@mykalroze Very observant. Actually, in every live performance since The Vertigo Tour (2005), Bono has sung "Early evening, April 4" to correct this, including the live performance at Obama's inauguration. As far as the studio version, they agreed It would be pretty outlandish to try to edit a 1984 recording of a legendary song, so they left it.
Now I can understand the neg reaction to my comments. I am in fact a U2 fan, but only of their early work. I don't think they've put out anything good in a long time. But I don't like Bono's voice though. Bob Dylan also has a terrible voice, but he's the best songwriter in the last 100 years. Not sayin Bono sucks
This remake of the song is HORRIBLE! I really don't know what all of you are thinking when giving it good reviews. I had to turn it off soon after it started because I couldn't listen any longer.

Let me know what other toned down version of u2 songs u found :)

no one could ever replace Martin Luther King Jr to me he is a hero and legend that will always live on forever, awesome song and very deep video....
This song, especially this version, this voice brings me to a place of such emotion for The fight, for Martin, for those we lost and for the fight that is happening now.
Thank you MLK and all in the moment who made it happen on the daily.

Thanks go to the editors and directors and technicians at History Channel and to John Legend for such an historic tribute.
His piano work is so emotional. Beautiful.
I can't see images of Dr. King without crying.
U2 recently reimagined this song. This is much better than their new version.
I'm a U2 fan: usually i hate covers, but this one is awesome! very nice voice, beautiful piano !
Congratulation !

John Legend is seriously underrated for his vocals !
As a big U2 fan I can get a bit precious about covers but f**k me this is a stunning cover.
There are few, if any, such men as GREAT as Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr..........
Sing that song John you are bless to be able to do such and always connect

Thanks History for making this happen
Brilliant! Love this version as much as the U2 version.
This was so beautiful...I love covers like this.
He did such justice to this song. I love it just as much as the original.
I cried, this was so pretty.
Beautiful job.
superbe la reprise !!!! beaucoup de talent John !!!!
Thank you Dr. King for sharing your dream with the world.
This is the best song ever made!
"An Unforgettable 2-Hour Event" hehe, he, Unforgettable Fire
2:22 I can’t stop crying 😢
John Legend is GOD. ✊🏿
Makes me want to learn piano now. Excellent version.
Beautiful version. It chills down my spine.
U2's lyrics say "early morning" because of the time zone differences. It may have been 6:01 pm in Memphis, but it was around 6:01 am in Ireland.
Good catch. I also caught that
Bono sings "early evening" in current live performances of the song.
Memphis 6:01PM was around 12:01AM in Ireland, not 6:01AM.
è fantastico..l'ho visto in concerto e canta benissimo dal vivo!! e poi è troppo bello...questa canzone mi fa piangere..fantastico...
loved this , and Martin Luthor King was maybe the greastest man of my generation.
OMG his voice is so amazing!
great music as always...
Tears to my eyes....
Thank you.
We heard this in my class today, and got did this give me chills.

Amazing job John!
a very good cover of this song, really like it!
What I like about it is that it is a completely different version.I love the original but this is very good. Stripped down and reworked.
Beautiful

Is about King's assassination. Furthermore how does U2 goes from writing something great like that to "Get on your boots"
I still don't get why they released that as the single for that album, Moment of Surrender was a much better song from that album.
I can tolerate Get On Your Boots. It's Discotheque that I can't abide. But U2 will always be my favorite band.
Martin Luther King 😊
no no no. sorry. I like John Legend but I love U2 version better. This kind of drags
+Tammy Lowe no no no. I like this one ,too. come on man. it's Legend.

they took his life, but they could not take his pride
Great song and video! Go Obama!
OMG O MY GOD
Amazing staff!
Free at last they took your life,, they couldn't take your PRIDE
Keep singing out.
What a great man... This song really does him justice. His charisma comes across even just from the few quotes in the video. Pity he had to die like that :S
PEACE......is it that hard?
Música linda

u can download it though
wow u can sing good job john legend ;) so sad tho why they had to kill Martin Luther King D;
mykalroze: That always bugs me too! Bono has admitted the error, and he does occasionally sing "early evening" during concerts....
Thumbs up from me! You?
Well, at least he didn't go all hip-hop, jiggity on it...I'll give him credit for that.
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
@rockerr12595 you do know that MLK Jr said it first..right?
what album is this song from!?
Any idea what KEY this is in???
:)
What's this "We" tuffguy? You got a hamster in your pants? How exactly are YOU going to overcome the Steelers?
4 justin bieber fans
Read the comment I responded to, then you will know.
I'm not nocking John Legend, I think he's amazing. But almost anyone who sings a U2 song is better than Bono. lol. Except Sunday Bloody Sunday
@mykalroze A quick example from 2005, type youtube dot com slash watch?v=ZdpwvVBXdfQ#t=2m15s Cheers!

Appropriate much, John?
In the beginning he just sounded like Bono.
nope
