The Lord commands us to be perfect. We know that He doesn’t really expect that of us at this point in our journey, so why does He even bother to command it?

Why do you think He commands us to be perfect when He knows we're not "ready" for that commandment?

This was very thought provoking once again. Thank you.
I would start out with a question. By saying Israel needed time to live the higher law, are you talking about the Law of Moses or the higher Law that Moses and the Lord tried to give them at Mt Siani which they resoundingly rejected?
The Law of Moses was a schoolmaster to bring them to Christ and It's now been 3300+ years and they aren't even close. I still like Elder's Holland's admonition to be ye therefore perfect, eventually.
As far as the Law in your home to not hit, I don't think that is cruel at all. I think it is far greater cruelty to have no Law at all, you be you, like the world teaches kids these days.
I loved your thoughts that we need to have something to set our sights on. I like Elder Nelson's thoughts given April 1995 where he makes the distinction between mortal and Eternal perfection. There are some things I can do perfectly (or very close) to on this earth, such as tithing or the omelet I made today. ;) As far as Eternal perfection, Elder Nelson points out that the infinitive form of perfect in Greek is teleiono which means a distant end. (Russel M Nelson Perfection Pending).
We must look way, way down the road because Heavenly Father can't leave all that He has to a whole bunch of still imperfect men and women.
Thanks for blessing me all over again.
