    Pleasurable activities which the participants perceive as healthy appear likely to confer meaningful benefits, especially if the activity is social.

    For me, the chronic pain benefit was very real: I no longer suffer of chronic pain, in part thanks to regular sauna use (combined with other approaches like calorie restriction and exercise). But every single time I went to the sauna, I was pain free for the next 5 hours or so.

    55 years old and got 90.2 kg (198.9 lb) on my identical grip strength tester, Sunday. Uploaded a 188.8 lb (86.6 kg) a few months ago. Just doing 5 min of resistance training with a couple small dumbbells in the backyard after sunset, currently. I used to lift, but that was back in 2007 (1984-2007). Never used any steroids or anything like that. Soy protein. Trying to ease back into it. I don't feel like nursing some big muscle strains.
    I was in bad shape not that long ago. Joints were terrible. Had tennis elbow for more than a year and a half. Lost 60 lb, all fat (just portion control and skipping dinner for the first 30. Added walking then hiking for the second 30). More to go, but feeling pretty good. No pains. Good flexibility. Balance is much improved. I credit hiking for balance.
    Sleep needs work. Stress reduction needs work. Upper body muscle needs work. Some large muscle leg work, maybe. My hip flexors have never been this large or strong. Hiking is apparently great for that. Shins are also strong and don't get sore going down steep hills. That burning pain was a given just 6 months ago, as I am a heavy guy. I do get some lower back muscle fatigue on one side if I hike more than 90 minutes. I plan to get my Concept 2 rowing machine back operational. I figure if I start rowing again, those back muscles will get back in shape. Not that I should be hiking more than 90 minutes at a time regularly. But it would be nice to do some longer hikes further from my home, for variety. Actually, learning to row on the water would be cool. Maybe when I am light enough that I don't sink the boats.

    You guys should talk with Siim Land about sauna use. He has strong opinions about this.

    I wish you guys could try the Russian banya with a professional banshik. With all the aromatics and concotions, hot tea and home-made jam. It's so relaxing you sleep like a baby after.

    Longevity is often linked to genetic and lifestyle factors, but a notable observation is that individuals with high IQs tend to live longer. The role of intelligence in promoting longevity is frequently overlooked, yet it appears to be a crucial factor.

    Mike Mutzel… O Oh... Just hope that he doesn't get a voice on the channel. A little too biased and unscientific to my taste.

    Thank you for the insightful talk, Matt! It definitely raised more questions for me, especially considering Wim Hof's record-breaking feats and the fact that his techniques have been replicated by others. There's also some intriguing research on how his method might regulate the immune system. Would love to hear more of your thoughts on this!

  • @Nelis1324

    I’m surprised immune system improvements have not been mentioned in your video. There are plenty of studies showing a reduction of cold/flue incidence through sauna use.
    To me that’s a big health improvement as someone that gets colds frequently. Don’t you think that’s important?

    This is traditional in many cold countries, very good for the mood. I always do it after a long trekking, warm sauna is the best after cold day

    I made elaborate plans to build a dry sauna next to my pool. Then I remembered that I live in Florida. I will be hiking in Maine and NH next week.

      Yeah, no joke. Mike is very good at putting a veneer of "science based" on his videos, but when you watch them critically it becomes very clear that his message is just as biased and cherry picky as the likes of Joe Rogan.

      @@randombartz8163 yeah, Mike loves to push anti-science videos because those are what people want to see, I guess. He is only for the science if it agrees with his own biases. I’m shocked that two respected scientists are hanging out with someone who doesn’t believe in science and is a known conspiracy theorist and calls scientist like Thomas Dayspring a liar 🤥 ugh.

      @@plants_and_wellness1574 Yeah, not to mention the fact that promoting cholesterol skepticism is particularly dangerous considering how common the narrative that "the carnivore diet is the best diet you can follow" has been lately, with some carnivore dieters even eating pure butter as a snack. I know Mike is not a carnivore and doesn't tell people to eat pure butter, but being convinced that high cholesterol is not bad and even potentially good can probably make uninformed people considering entering those extreme diets more encouraged to do so.
      EDIT: For instance, they might start the diet, notice that they are losing weight and feeling better (mostly because the diet is very restrictive and they are likely consuming less calories and cutting out a lot of ultraprocessed junk food), but instead of getting a big scare after seeing their LDL levels through the roof on their bloodwork, they might actually see it as a sign that things are going even better.

    Cold plunge is a fad. Don’t waste your money. For sauna, just exercise outside during the summer.

    • @plants_and_wellness1574
      @plants_and_wellness1574 28 днів тому +1

      @@cactuscanine3531 seriously! Its not good for the heart- “cold water immersion causes an instant and massive increase in heart rate and blood pressure which increases the danger of heart failure and stroke” and it inhibits muscle growth if you do it at the wrong time. The benefits don’t outweigh the risks and it’s a miserable experience 😅

    • @randombartz8163
      @randombartz8163 28 днів тому +2

      Some of the evidence for the sauna seems interesting, but I think the main problem is that even if the benefits are real, the older you are the more likely you would be to benefit from them, but at the same time, the older you are, you're probably also much more likely to experience the risks associated with it (passing out, having a heart complication due to the stress, etc), which might negate any improvements in life/healthspan you might have in theory.
      That being said, I would like to see some rigorous studies on those red light/infra red light sauna blankets since red light therapy is another "promising therapy" (in double quotes because the data is somewhat weak, but suggests a positive effect that would be nice to see tested more rigorously). And such a study could test both at once in a relative cheap setting (probably much easier to just tell people to use the blankets than having to physically move to a sauna outside their homes). I don't know if the current models do that already since I don't own one, but one upside would be the possibility to have a built in failsafe mechanism that turns them off after 30 minutes of use or so to avoid problems of people passing out or sleeping and staying in it for too long. EDIT: It would be really hard to double blind it, though.
