Mandy, you're a boon to humanity. You do such a great work and service to the modern automotive technician. I love adding links to your videos in mine and driving traffic your way. You deserve it! Thanks for all you do!
I disagree with your "no bearing on" how the engine runs . It can cause fuel tank filling issues as well as other lean/ rich conditions If stuck in either open or closed signal to ECM to control Vent valve operation, which it does . Specifically in conjuction with fuel vapor purge valve for fuel trim specs .
Thanks My wifes 2013 Chrysler T&C has constantly had the engine light- "P0456 generic small evap leap"(so now you can't tell if there;'s really something wrong) since we bought it. I've replaced Cap w/ OEM. The dealer replaced cap twice.(These are the guys who put the wrong lug nuts back on it- wouldn't pass Ispn my 05 ram because the "rack&pinion is bad" on my gear box steering syst -Rolls eyes) Great vid
Is there any way to jumper this to give a reading back to the ECM so it won't throw codes till new parts come in? A friend snapped his while changing his fuel pump and we can't find any anywhere close that aren't absurdly expensive.
Got a po453 and a Po446 code on my 2002 escalade. Sometimes when I turn it on it idles rough so I was told i had to replace the fuel tank pressure sensor ?
is the ftp sensor on top of the fuel pump? in every picture i have seen, that is where it seems to be, but no one is actually saying that this is the location. i have a 2001 chevy blazer 4.3L 2 door. thank you in advance
On the trailblazer its on the top/rear/driver side, accessible without tank removal. The "ext" (3rdRowSeat) model may have it on the pump & tank must come down.
Thanks for this! Very informative. One question: what if FTP_V pid in scan tool shows 5v even when the FTP sensor is disconnected? I also get no voltage reading from the harness....
I have three sensors here. 2 are from the top of a airtex assembly, I have 2 , they are identical looking and supposed to be brand new. They act different when I hook them to a Ohm meter . one i can get a reading when I hook the two outside pins , Or one outside pin to the center, the other I can only get a reading from center to either outside pin but not the out side pins without the center pin, The third sensor I have is the one that was on the 2001 yukon and it gets no reading from any pin in any combo. This is so irritating I cannot even describe it. you cannot get to the tank sensor on one of these trucks without dropping the tank. what one is good and why are they going bad? why do they not read the same if two are good and I still have a code. How do you test these sensors for SURE while they are OUTSIDE the vehicle?
Hi, good evening, I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee 2002 limited, which, when loading 30 liters of gasoline, I see that the gas tank indicator drops more or less quickly. Since when I charge 30 liters, the indicator marks me 1/4, and having 30 liters in the tank, almost full mark (missing 1/8). But in a day of crossing maximum 5 km, it takes 1/8 of the tank of gasoline. I do not know if it is a sensor, or if they have to readjust some other piece. Also when activating the Air conditioning, only the cold air from the passenger side comes out of the grid that is glued to the window of the passenger door, but not to the central grilles or the chauffeur. I also see that the compressor is not activated when the AC system is turned on. They recommend me to fix this situation. Thank you very much for the help.
Question I put a new fuel tank on my 2000 F 150 , and a new fuel tank pressure sensor I had no lights on before the new tank now I'm getting a PO 453 , high tank pressure sensor code , Any ideas ?
I get a p0460 pending reading for the fuel level sensor "A" Circuit. Is there a way to reset this reading? I changed the gas cap and the fuel pump is working well. It appears since I have a 2002 ford focus ZX3 the sensor is attached to the fuel pump. Is there anything else I can do before spending $500 to replace the fuel pump. It appears the tank needs to be dropped to change the fuel pump. Any idea? Thank you.
Rosemary, DO NOT CHANGE THE FUEL PUMP PLEASE... The issue is the FTP sensor. It is a small square block, 3 wires, close to the fuel tank on most cars (not all) and measures the ability of the fuel tank and hoses to retain a slight pressure or vacuum. In other words, it makes sure the EVAP or fuel vapor system is SEALED. THere is a whole procedure for checking this system. I wrote a series of Book and Video that deals with the EVAP system. It's impossible to do it here. Here's the link if you feel it can help you.: www.createspace.com/320278 www.createspace.com/3623940
i had a brand new gas tank installed on my 97 town car now i cant tell how much fuel i have and it just reads co and 2 == equal symbols but the pump didn't do this until new tank was installed any idea of whats causing this
i was installing fuel pump on my 1997 grand marquis LS anyhow the switch on top broke off when i was unplugging it. what will happen if i dont replace it
I am getting a "fuel tank pressure sensor" code when the vehicle is scanned. I replaced the gas cap but it appears that the sensor needs to be replaced as well. The sensor cost me $40 at Auto-Zone. Is it necessary to drop the tank to replace this sensor?
Depends on the car. All vehicles are different. You need a service manual or for 20 bucks get all data DIY and it's good for your car only. See where the FTPS is and replace it. WHile youre there key on engine off and check the sensor connector for Ground, 5 Volt Reference, and Signal. GOod luck.
but that's just for the gas pump. The sensor might even be under the hood rather than on top of the tank. Also note that Hondas are infamous for a leaking o-ring in the filler neck. Should have gotten a pressure test before blaming the sensor.
The code didnt necessarily blame the gas cap or the sensor directly. The technician at Auto Zone suggested the two potential issues. I did replace the sensor as well (jacked the rear driver side of the truck up, removed the tire and fender skirt, and there was the sensor, right on top of the fuel pump assembly) and the check engine light went out. Very easy fix. Took longer to get the tire and fender skirt out of the way.
Haveing problem with Ford 460 it runs but you have to pump the gas peddle freally fast and it barely runs. It pops and go's on. It ran fine when I parked it. It set for about a year without starting. Its like it isn't getting enough gas. Please help.
Yes, of course. Often, today's ECMs are too smart and the MONITOR software realizes that there is a sensor issue. Right after 1999 there was a major shift to using 64 bit ECMs when the consumers were still on 32 bits. So, a lot of the DTCs today are generated by rationality testing.
Po453 can that cause the po171 and 174 to trigger to cause 01 crown victoria have these codes and i think my car runs bad after the idle at a drive thru....but all is showing up is these 3 codes
Lagary Moy No Moy, P0171 and 172 are VERY COMMON CODES. They cover 75% of Air fuel imbalance issues. They point to a system running lean and your scanner FUEL TRIMS should be >+10 (greater than). The most common code is a vacuum leak. On FORDS you may want to clean the MAF sensor. Dealers say it's not supposed to be cleaned, but it is. So to re-cap: Check your MAF SENSOR and for a VACUUM LEAK.... www.autodiagnosticsandpublishing.com/
I drive a 2003 Pontiac Aztek! and recently I got that " Service Engine Soon" light, so I scanned for trouble codes and I got this code: "P0452 Evaporative Emission System Pressure Sensor/ Switch Low Input". Now, does that have anything to do with the Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor? and also, sometimes my Fuel gauge indicates that I have no fuel or that it's low on fuel when I know it's full!! I would really appreciate your help! I'm trying to do this myself!!
Ok, yes the code P0452 is related to the fuel tank pressure sensor. This system will not prevent the car from starting, but it looks like you have an electrical issue. The fact that you lost the fuel gauge tells me that you probably have a loose ground. Here's our latest product: www.autodiagnosticsandpublishing.com/Injector_Pulser_Tool.html
please help 04 ford escape p0453 it was running I have this code and I erase the it and I try to start it back up , but nothing, some how the pump short out and I replaced it and it started back up , I put my Maxidas autel ds708 scanner and it says is stock in 5v so my grown wire is bad?
Ok so my truck shows on the dash that has no gas on the meter but it got gas , can it be the pressure sensor ? Oh and my truck won't start on? Help please.
Btw, my computer threw a code for low fuel reading gauge sender when I consistently kept only a couple of gallons in the tank. The gague was right, the computer was wrong .
I have a question I drive a 2006 Escalade trying to see what could be causing gas to come back up when I am pumping gas. I checked the fuel line and didn't see a pinched hose so still not sure what could be causing the issue. I'm thinking that it might be the fuel air evap has anybody ever had this problem before if so what did you do to fix it?
jewjew Garcia Yes, this is a real issue sometimes, regardless of what brand of car you drive. It is related to the CHECK-BALL at the fuel filler neck. Inside that fuel filler neck is a ping pong size check-ball that prevents fuel from exiting the tank if it flips or you overfill it. It is a check valve or ball and seat. That simple mechanical system is getting stuck. Your best and faster recourse is to replace it. It is a simple repair.
There's going to be the wire on one end, a small hose on the opposite end, and two plastic clamps on either side of your fuel pump holding it in. Disconnect it from the wire, then from the clamps, and the hose should come easy.
I have a 2001 Chevy Venture the voltage under absolutely no pressure 4.78 when I start the car it goes to 4.83 does that mean the sensor is bad I can't find anywhere on the internet wear it tells you the general sensor information
I have a 2004 Tahoe. For the past 3 years, once the fuel gauge gets to less than half a tank it won't crank. It'll turn over, but won't crank. Acts like it's out of gas, but it's not. Could that be the fuel pump or the fuel tank pressure sensor. It's very aggravating to have to fill up at a half a tank.
No, these circuits are highly protected and fed though a larger resistor to cause any issues. You shouldn't feed 12 volts to any of these wire, but other than that no worries. This is why if I see any of my guys using the Power-Probe I discourage its use. Now, back to your assumption. As the video says, if you disconnect and probe on the signal wire, should see a voltage. If so, FINE, great, replace the sensor. If not, then jump wire, even if SIGNAL is shorted to ground. And if shorted to Gnd. and you do this test, then no change will be seen. You have a wiring issue. 99% of the time it's a broken wire due to the fuel tank being exposed to the elements. But too often the FTP sensor is replaced ERRONEOUSLY. Makes sense?
No, the issue is low current. The 5 volt ref. signal is in the 5 mA max. range. ALso there's a high value resistor protecting the circuit. Almost all automotive sensors work on 5 volt. Imagine if every time the 5v ref. shorts to ground you'd loose the ECM, the ECM failure rate would be quite high. Now, I say again, if you short the sensor ground to 12 volts, then it be an issue, probably burn the ECM. THis is why the common side of the circuit is always ground. There were cars in the 50's with Positive chassis, but I wouldn't see that as productive. To finalize, the reason why nothing happens if 5 volts shorts to ground is LOW CURRENT in the mA range or lower. In fact, the FTP and TPS sensors are a form of short though an internal resistor. Since the circuit is low power it generates NO-HEAT whatsoever. THanks or being interested in this stuff.
No, don't use a test light for SENSOR circuits. Just pay attention and DON'T use a Power-Probe. Not even just to see the LEDs lights. Introducing 12 V will do damage. Grounding the 5 volt reference will not.
Hello I have a 2001 Tahoe code PO452 checked wires good has knew purge valve and is working has knew vent solenoid and has power knew fuel pump module all hoses are clear checked ecm the the wires for the tank pressure switch check good is it possible the vapor canister is the problem for this code
John Allen P0452 means that the EVAP pressure sensor is shorted to ground or its output will stay low near ground. 1) Disconnect sensor and connect BLUE-VOLTAGE-SIMULATOR to it. This mimics the ECM circuit and allows you to test the sensor. 2) Apply some suction with a clean vacuum hose and your mouth or vacuum hand pump and watch for a signal change. 3) If not, then replace sensor. If there is a change, then the issue is in the EVAP plumbing. www.autodiagnosticsandpublishing.com/ecm_reference_voltage.html
with the engine running, I was jumping 5v with the signal wire and dropping down, and then I jumped ground with the signal and the car shut down, I think it was the pump
+ADPTraining I hook up my Maxidas autel ds 708 and live data tells me 5V unplugging the FTP doesn't change at all I cleaned up the plug, wiggle the wires to see any chances, can I ground the wire running an other wire
