I grew up in Norwich and left at age 18 to go to Uni. Never been back as I have since then lived and worked around the world. As I near retirement I feel a definite pull to return, if only to reminisce and re-live childhood memories. Your videos help be get my Norwich 'fix' in the meantime. Thanks for all you do, John.
Hi John - one of my favourite areas of Norwich - thanks for sharing some of the history - been tuning in regularly to your videos for a while - always fascinating - regards Edward 🙂
I stayed, with my wife, for a few days at The Maid's Head in 1978. Our room looked out on to Tombland, and it was rather noisy from the traffic. The missus wasn't too well; turned out to be morning sickness! As usual, a very interesting account of this part of Norwich.
Very wonderful. Interesting it was the old center. Boswells music venue/pub was next to Erpingham House for many years. Maids Head..amazing..800 years.
Brilliant! - I used to go dancing at the Sampson and Hercules in the early 1980s - it was so chintzy back then - loads of trouble most of the time, constant fighting in and outside the club but it was great. I recall the bouncers being particularly horrible....
In 1983 I took a temporary job at the Maids Head Hotel after being made redundant. Owner, who I think was Mr. Cook was an absolute tyrant, unliked by all and in my experience a very unpleasant man. He always seemed to be at his Masons club on Elm Hill but he did have some really cool cars, a Gordon Keeble to name one.
Thanks for you suggestion. To be honest I don't know where to begin. My initial thought is that sometimes I would see a photo of a charity shop, which I could collect in a folder and eventually I might have enough to make a video. Leave it with me and I'll see what I can do, or if I can come up with any better methodology.
@@adrianmower385 ah, ok - this video may be of interest in that context. It has a shot of Magdalen Street, pretty close to that shop. ua-cam.com/video/YYeWv7F1ENI/v-deo.html
Thanks I have seen that video I did find that interesting the main reason for me asking about history of charity shops is because I have been volunteering in charity shops for ten years now in almost every charity shops the main charity shop I am in now is age uk on London Street and we desperately need volunteers if you know of anyone who' want to volunteer in a charity shop or to do some work experience they must be 16 years and over we are a very friendly bunch
@@adrianmower385 ok thanks. If you can possibly give me some addresses of charity shops you've worked in, I may be able to identify historic photos, and then I could put some sort of message on the film about volunteers.
Always a pleasure John watching your videos. I helped put this video together by trawling Google for photos of Norwich to be used as a slideshow to accompany some music. I thank you for helping me be interested in a city I have yet to visit. Warm regards ua-cam.com/video/Dg77RAsimFc/v-deo.htmlsi=E0gu_8VboR7uwxFt
Thank you Xavier for your comments and for sharing this video. I'd recommend anyone who likes my channel to watch it - a great compilation of old photos and superb backing track. If you like, I'll put it on my Lost Norwich Facebook page.

Thank you for that comment, Kevin, it means a lot 👍
I remember in the 1971 film, The Go Between, Tombland featured for the market scene and. although quite short, looked resplendent
Thanks Andrew, I wasn't aware of that. I'd like to see that!
I hadn't realised there was a statue to Edith Cavell, thank you for another interesting video. I'll have to get down to Norwich this year
Thanks for your comment. You'd be most welcome!

Thank you, and an equally interesting account of events in 1978…!
I liked seeing the old maps. Next time I'm there, I'd like to walk around again with all the new knowledge I've learned from this video.
Thank you, I am sure we can arrange that!

I'm currently reading the novel Tombland, based in 1549, and the Maid's Head features significantly. I think it was a bit before Mr Cook's time!
Great history! Interesting video! 💜💙💖💙💖💙💜
Thank you!
This is why they needed all these high walls round the cathedral ha-ha! Great video !
Undoubtedly! Thank you.
Sad that so many of the modern pics of the various areas look a mess with 'roadwork' barriers etc. !
I agree - I guess it reflects a city that is never finished!
Brilliant, as ever👏🏻✅
Thank you!
