He's wrong here on one thing: None of the solutions in his film are things that no one in America has thought of. As he says in the film, they've all actually been thought of in America, it's just that the American people allowed themselves to be convinced that they were bad ideas that would never work. Hi folks. I'm from Portugal and I'd like to explain the question regarding the "decriminalization of all drugs". It's important to notice that this was a decriminalization of consumption (of all drugs) - which is now treated as a health issue, not a criminal issue. However, drug trafficking is a crime and you will be arrested for possession if you have an amount considered too high to be justified as for personal use only. That's why when Michael Moore says that he has cocaine, the cops get so serious - because he could get arrested for it. Removing the criminal offense status of drug consumption created a better social environment for people dealing with addiction to resort to the public health system, and find the treatment they need - without the risk and the stigma of facing criminal charges.
Actually many Americans know and understand this like myself. But it is such a battle here for good ideas like this since a lot of money is spent by the government and made by many private companies, it will be hard to end this endless supply of profit for a "drug war" that is futile, the money stream is hard to fight.
it's a mind and heartblowing movie. I caught myself with tears a couple of times. I'we had the impression for a long time that if his apperance would be better,,he would be more appealing to the americans and people would take his movies more seriously. Michael Moore, you came, you saw, and you conquered. I saw "Who to Invade Next" yesterday in an Austrian cinema. And I really liked it. It is a film with some laughs and some constructive and imaginative and unexpected answers - all involving no violence. The right film at the right time. America, you should watch it.

He manipulates data like hell and then tries to convince us he is providing the raw facts for us to make a determination. As a German who studied at an American Ivy League University and now lives in Scandinavia I found this film to be touching on so many levels. It is honest, eye-opening, positive and painful at the same time. It´s a must watch and leaves enough space to argue about since it´s far less preachy than you´d expect. You can say whatever you want about Michael Moore but this movie is a tremendous piece of essayism.
Norwegians do not have paid vacation. What actually happens is that some portion of your salary is set aside for vacation. This amount is then paid to you in June instead of salary, regardless of when you actually go on vacation.

In Canada, good education is cheap, healthcare is free (we pay higher taxes of-course), we have good unemployment insurance, women get up to a year off for maternity leave, daycare is subsidized and our streets are safe. Bottom line is if you make it easier for average people to be educated and healthy, the gap between rich and poor is smaller, there is less crime and you don't have as many people digging their graves with their teeth through poor diet due to ignorance - you have more equality and a better lifestyle for more people (not just the rich and ultra-rich). The US needs to but out of other countries and stop spending trillions on weapons while owing tons of money to countries like China. Time to wake up and smell the coffee. Lots to learn from others. Keep an open mind. Good film.
Nothing in the world is free. Your desire to pay less tax comes at a cost-more personal expenses, some of which you may not be able to afford personally e.g. long term health care and higher education when you/your parents are on minimum wage etc

Going to university is not totally free here in Germany. I have to pay a "Semesterbeitrag", a payment once every semester directly to the university. It amounts to ca. 600 - 700 euros a year. However, as far as I know that's basically "free" by American standards ;)

I work for a British Company and this is the list of holidays and other perks we get: 1. unlimited sick leaves 2. we moved houses last year and I got 2 days off3. 25 days - normal holidays 4. gym in the office (which is not free but heavily discounted) 5. dental care - which is again heavily discounted6. doctors visit in the office if I have any health issues due to work7. my colleague had an accident and he didn't come into the office for 4 months. all medical bills and operations were taken care off (no he didn't have an accident in the office)8. my another colleague had a major illness and he had to take months off. he was taken care off by the best doctors in the country. he is healthy now. 9. 1 year maternity leave for women, which can be shared between partners. 10. adoption leave.11. honeymoon leave. Why does my company give these holidays / perks? Because they treat us as humans not "resources" of the company... But I pay higher taxes than USA. Why? So that the people who need help, can get help from the taxes I and people like me... I work hard though... I start work at 7:30 AM and end at 5:30-6:00 PM. I think it is correct that Colbert also points out that there are bad and good everywhere. People tends to blame their own country and believe that "grass is greener on the other side". I am from Italy and the past government did treat immigrants bad by being proud to do so, I lived in London and now in Berlin. There are things to copy and things to throw in the bin in both of these big cities. We need to stop both to commiserate ourselves or to think we are the best. I think we can call it being objective.
About the drug thing going on in Portugal: possesion is not criminalized; *however*, selling is. So if you're caught with a small enough portion that is considered to be for personal, one time use it's more or less OK (it's not a crime, but it's frowned upon obviously), but if it's more than that then you get arrested of course because it indicates your intention to sell. You also can't be caught driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
I don't agree with Michael Moore on a lot of things, but I think he's a good guy and his heart is in the right place. I appreciated the Drug War segment. The Drug War is a HUGE waste of money. We could pay for free education just by ending that. I don't believe free education is even possibly because we waste so much money on stupid things like Prohibition.
They should have mentioned that it's still a crime to sell or manufacture drugs in Portugal. It's also illegal to be in possession of large amounts of drugs. So what has been done is authorities started investing their funds going after drug dealers and treating drug users. The results appear to be massively positive across the board.

If you do in the US however, you will only be treated by the best doctors available if you can afford the insurance, or a private doctor. Michael Moore doesn't mention that Italy's unemployment rate for people under 40 is hovering around 38%. The unemployment rate for older workers is less, because they are the beneficiaries of an old system which grandfathered them job security that is no longer available to new workers; also, many Italians are now employed by non-Italian companies from elsewhere in the EU, and have no protection as Italian workers, even in their own country (see: Ryanair Italy-based crewmembers). I'm afraid Mr. Moore was taken hook, line and sinker on this one.

I am an expat living in Germany. You do need to speak, read, write, and understand German very well in order to get a bachelor degree here. However, for masters degrees, most are taught in English. Also, you do have to pay a little bit to attend school here. For a masters degree it costs me 160 euros every 6 months.
The movie is about good ideas and best practices, not about the total environment on which they arose, not about how to implement or pays for them within one political system.

Hi folks. I'm from Portugal and I'd like to explain the question regarding the "decriminalization of all drugs". It's important to notice that this was a decriminalization of consumption (of all drugs) - which is now treated as a health issue, not a criminal issue. However, drug trafficking is a crime and you will be arrested for possession if you have an amount considered too high to be justified as for personal use only. That's why when Michael Moore says that he has cocaine, the cops get so serious - because he could get arrested for it.
Removing the criminal offense status of drug consumption created a better social environment for people dealing with addiction to resort to the public health system, and find the treatment they need - without the risk and the stigma of facing criminal charges.
Actually many Americans know and understand this like myself. But it is such a battle here for good ideas like this since a lot of money is spent by the government and made by many private companies, it will be hard to end this endless supply of profit for a "drug war" that is futile, the money stream is hard to fight.

As a German who studied at an American Ivy League University and now lives in Scandinavia I found this film to be touching on so many levels. It is honest, eye-opening, positive and painful at the same time. It´s a must watch and leaves enough space to argue about since it´s far less preachy than you´d expect. You can say whatever you want about Michael Moore but this movie is a tremendous piece of essayism.

In Canada, good education is cheap, healthcare is free (we pay higher taxes of-course), we have good unemployment insurance, women get up to a year off for maternity leave, daycare is subsidized and our streets are safe. Bottom line is if you make it easier for average people to be educated and healthy, the gap between rich and poor is smaller, there is less crime and you don't have as many people digging their graves with their teeth through poor diet due to ignorance - you have more equality and a better lifestyle for more people (not just the rich and ultra-rich). The US needs to but out of other countries and stop spending trillions on weapons while owing tons of money to countries like China. Time to wake up and smell the coffee. Lots to learn from others. Keep an open mind. Good film.

Going to university is not totally free here in Germany. I have to pay a "Semesterbeitrag", a payment once every semester directly to the university. It amounts to ca. 600 - 700 euros a year.

1. unlimited sick leaves
2. we moved houses last year and I got 2 days off3. 25 days - normal holidays 4. gym in the office (which is not free but heavily discounted)
5. dental care - which is again heavily discounted6. doctors visit in the office if I have any health issues due to work7. my colleague had an accident and he didn't come into the office for 4 months. all medical bills and operations were taken care off (no he didn't have an accident in the office)8. my another colleague had a major illness and he had to take months off. he was taken care off by the best doctors in the country. he is healthy now. 9. 1 year maternity leave for women, which can be shared between partners. 10. adoption leave.11. honeymoon leave. Why does my company give these holidays / perks? Because they treat us as humans not "resources" of the company...

I think it is correct that Colbert also points out that there are bad and good everywhere. People tends to blame their own country and believe that "grass is greener on the other side". About the drug thing going on in Portugal: possesion is not criminalized; *however*, selling is. So if you're caught with a small enough portion that is considered to be for personal, one time use it's more or less OK (it's not a crime, but it's frowned upon obviously), but if it's more than that then you get arrested of course because it indicates your intention to sell. You also can't be caught driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

I don't agree with Michael Moore on a lot of things, but I think he's a good guy and his heart is in the right place. I appreciated the Drug War segment. The Drug War is a HUGE waste of money. We could pay for free education just by ending that. I don't believe free education is even possibly because we waste so much money on stupid things like Prohibition.
They should have mentioned that it's still a crime to sell or manufacture drugs in Portugal. It's also illegal to be in possession of large amounts of drugs. So what has been done is authorities started investing their funds going after drug dealers and treating drug users. The results appear to be massively positive across the board.

Michael Moore doesn't mention that Italy's unemployment rate for people under 40 is hovering around 38%. The unemployment rate for older workers is less, because they are the beneficiaries of an old system which grandfathered them job security that is no longer available to new workers; also, many Italians are now employed by non-Italian companies from elsewhere in the EU, and have no protection as Italian workers, even in their own country (see: Ryanair Italy-based crewmembers). I am an expat living in Germany. You do need to speak, read, write, and understand German very well in order to get a bachelor degree here. However, for masters degrees, most are taught in English. Also, you do have to pay a little bit to attend school here. For a masters degree it costs me 160 euros every 6 months.
The movie is about good ideas and best practices, not about the total environment on which they arose, not about how to implement or pays for them within one political system.

The idea that he seems to be speaking about here reminds me of 'Peter the great'. He spent the first few years of his reign (in the 1690's) touring western European countries and learning from them. He then returned to his homeland and used what he had learned to benefit his own country. These days, he is credited with modernising Russia and turning it into a true empire.
"I don't care." the best line in this interview. From what I can judge (I have never been to America and I live in Europe) this is the biggest problem in America. There are just two political parties and it creates a divide in public opinion in everything of importance. You basically do your job for your enemies (divide and conquer, anyone?). Yes, we have political parties in Europe, but at least in my country, there's more than two and different parties agree on different things so there's (almost) always a majority opinion on any given subject. As opposed to a two party system where you can't possibly reach any kind of decision and thus needed change is almost impossible and always very slow.

I'm a European, and a socialist, but I can't help feeling that Michael Moore has looked at Europe and socialism, and although he appreciates the benefits, he has understood very little of it.
