Before the band’s headlining show at Nashville’s Marathon Music Works, Premier Guitar’s Chris Kies hopped onstage before soundcheck to see how guitarist Tim Sult and bassist Dan Maines use vintage axes, roaring tube heads, and a select few stomps set fire to the band’s live shows.
Guitarist Tim Sult is constantly chasing a raw, “Free-on-steriods” tone in his head and he’s currently lassoing that idea with a pair of 1965 Gibson SGs. (When we tracked down the band for their 2009 Rig Rundown he was using Les Paul Standards and when we chatted about 2013’s Earth Rocker, he was favoring a P-90-loaded Les Paul Jr.) This cherry red one has been updated with newer TonePros hardware but does still have its stock P-90s. Both SGs are rocking D’Addario NYXL .011-.049 strings.
Bassist Dan Maines has played many basses (Fender, Lakland, Gibson), but the 2017 winter tour saw him taking the stage with a Rickenbacker 4003 with the Ric-O-Sound stereo jack that he’s been leaning on since 2010. With the help of his tech, Dan Maines uses a homemade pedal to split the pickups to their own Ampeg cabs-the neck hits the 1x15 and the bridge goes into the 8x10. And he has a third signal-a DI-that goes to front of house.

Tim may not be animated on stage but when he strikes a chord live, it's like the gods have spoken
That’s Orange amps for ya 😉
Dude seems like a soft spoken, humble. Understated genius. 🤘🏾
@@myname6429 great band. Underrated. The Weirdos outta LA.
@@jamesgwarrior1981 Chomo!! Singer is a drug addict!
Yeah, a major introvert, very uncomfortable with the mic on him. But such an under-appreciated riff-master.
@@gregstalnaker7741 word 🫱🏻🫲🏽very well stated. Really wish Slaughter beach would have destroyed more, than it did…🤘🏽🍻
Sult is one of the all time Riff lords. thanks for diving into his rig.
You are welcome I’m sure
You can really tell that these guys never were out to be famous, they just love playing music. Clutch deserves more respect, they're as pure of a rock band as they come
Chris Kies always knows his shit when he does these. He knows albums, tones, songs and stuff. I know research is a huge thing in journalism but this guy is on point.
This was off a bit in vibe, but EXACTLY sugarman
I like him better than most
Every note he plays is deliberate and purposeful, and never anything more. No flash, no glitz, just straight riffage.
Clutch may one of the best shows I have ever attended. So much energy and sound!
Clutch shows are joint first with The Prodigy shows for energy and atmosphere, and joint first with with any shows the Doug does the sound for.
I love Dougie, that big fat brummie fucker can get the soundstage perfect in literally EVERY venue he walks into 🥰
Clutch "Psychic Warfare" is easily one of the best rock albums of the last 10 years, if not in history. Brilliant riffs, great grooves and rhythms, and then Neil's brilliantly mental lyrics! Great on album, even better live! As the others said, so great and down to earth.
I second these comments
Clutch rock!!!
Kudos to Chis Kies ... this was a tough one.
I'm so glad you guys did this Rundown with CLUTCH!!! They are sadly under-reported in the world of PRO ROCK!!! Tim, Dan, Neil and Jean Paul are purveyors of some of the most amazing tones and heavy rock ever! Love these guys, Love you PG! Mahalo ~ Tone
Easily the best live band ever!
this is the most awkward rig rundown ever lol but I liked it.
Oh Lord.....precisely.....
Chris does a great job. Jesus...
Right...wow
Speed is a funny drug when your trying to....... well do anything
Yea.... Tim is pacing around like he REALLY has to pee😂
Tim & Dan....real masters of axe..very underestimated of in you're face professional Masters...you want hard....??Tim & Dan are Lord's...God bless Clutch..!
These guys are so mellow it's hard to believe they write such kick ass rockin' music! Clutch has been #1 in my book since around 2000, really developing into the band we see today around 2004. Pretty sure that's when they got serious and sold their souls to the devil. lol
Those guys are brilliant ❤
Best part: "How did you get familiar with such an unknown company?" - "I just went to that music store and tried it out." Mind blown. There are still people doing it this way these days. LUL
17:17 Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Favorite Band!!!
Clutch: The pride of the DMV. Also, Tim is making me nervous.
_shouldn't have downed that gallon of iced tea before the interview_
he's not real comfortable in front of the camera is he! LOL! I need those 65' SG's!!
Yup he looks awkward on stage too but what a guitar player. I love clutch
He has seen them...
I feel like it's probably a lot easier to KNOW personally why you choose the guitars/amps/whatever you do than EXPLAIN why you chose them. They're two different skills, IMHO. Despite whatever awkwardness (if it exists), Tim has been a consistently amazing member of Clutch.
Sometimes people get awkward during interviews. I'm one of them. But let's give people the benefit of the doubt. He obviously knows his shit, let's cut some slack! ☺️
The guy who owns park amps now is Mitch Colby. Super awesome dude. Highly recommend checking his stuff out
Clutch=badass
Like their laidback attitude
Seen em live, incredible!
It is a live boring band.
I’ve seen them about 20 times live. It literally NEVER the same show twice, even when they are on tour supporting an album.
ALL HAIL THEE ALMIGHTY CLUTCH
Never knew Mike Huckabee played for Clutch.. Neato.
Thanks for the run down Dan.
loving this! thanks
Anyone who has ever in their life experienced Clutch play 'Impetus' or 'Binge and Purge' live, knows EXACTLY how hardcore this band is (let alone how insane their shows were back in the 90s), one of the best bands I've ever seen live in my lifetime so far, they absolutely destroy any venue they play, Clutch rules, nuff said.
Thanks for this.
Love what Tim Sult says about drive pedals at 13:35. Seems like not enough guitarists are getting their OD sound straight from an amp these days.
I do, but I use an mxr micro amp to get more, other than that it's all my amp
It’s just super consistent
Just stomp that switch and “my drive” is right there.
I tend to run my other pedals (phaser/ flangers / fuzz) through the classic gain on a Marshall
Don’t need pedals when you got those orange heads. Even the solid states sound killer.
Boosts and treble boosts are my favorite way to get more
New Guitar Tone on Book of Bad Decisions is sooo damn good
Tim 'Rain Man' Sult.
Chris, the real MVP!
Whoa! Is that a Fargo Brewing Company hat that Tim is wearing???? Great rundown!
Tim sult is the man!
Saw them in Clarksville, Tennessee tonight (9/27/19). Great Soapmakers and a great Quick Death in Texas. Awesome show with Hatebreed and Cane Hill.
I have had the pleasure of speaking with Tim at a Deep Swell Show.
He’s a very nice guy and his playing is an inspiration to me.
I run a Gibson Government issue Explorer through a Marshall 100w tube head on a 4x 12” cabinet.
Also because I saw Neil using a Hagstrom on the Psychic Warfare tour I bought a Viking 12 string for fun.
That plays nice through a line6 stereo chorus
Lots of musicians have a different flavor they like each month. There is nothing wrong with that. However, it makes sense to have a core sound to build from, so your sound is still familiar.
Neil is the background at 17:20. years ago i carded him at a beer store i worked at. like back in 1995 and realized it was him after i saw his name. he bought Heinekin.
I'm not sure which one he is
@@Matt-pd2cq Neil is the singer of Clutch.
YES!
bringing it from BOYDS, MD. this band rules and are super nice guys.
Who's from Boyds?
@@gnlout7403 Ok maybe they are from Comus? Clutch is from somewhere over there.
@@darthlazlo Gaithersburg. Neil and Danny lived in my neighborhood. I don't know where Jean Paul or Tim lived but it was either Gaithersburg or Germantown. Boyds is basically north Germantown.
@@gnlout7403 yeah I guess you are right about Neil and Danny. Thanks man.
@@darthlazlo close enough ;)
nicest guys ever.
Damn he’s nailing Tim to the wall, hope you get some free shot out of this.
How did Buzz fit all his hair inside of that cap?
Thought the same thing sounds like Buzzo
awesome, I love Action Music! nice!
Thank you Tim for doing what you do!
Dan also
Clutch is the fuggin best.
And what is that for?
Ahhhhhhh
Marshall made a distribution deal with Rose-Morris, which drove the prices of Marshalls through the roof. So long story short, Jim Marshall and his staff started making amps under other monickers like Park and Kitchen Marshall. In the 90s Marshall made small cheap amps with the Park-name.
Kudos to the interviewer for keeping Tim moving. Kinda hard to watch.
wow yous guys got the Ankle question in there with Tim!
\m/
I love him. Seems like shy guy. Like we are here in Finland. Except when we Finnish guy are drunk, then it`s different tone.....
I like that how Tim's guitar has a bit of a Tony Iommi/Black Sabbath vibe to it, also as for Dan's bass that's probably one of the nicest Rickenbacker I've ever seen. You honestly don't see many bands with Ricks nowadays, man
One of the many times I saw him was back in 2004 he was using a silver face twin with a JTM 45 half stack
Clutch fuckin Rules!
Tim is the best, so is Dan. Seem like just good doods.
Action Music -- been going there since '98. Can be pricey but a great store.
...ok after watchin a lot of rundowns im just gunna say it....THERE ARE MORE POGS ON BOARDS THEN ANY OTHER PEDAL!! its gotta to be the most popular pedal for big artists
Chris, you forgot to ask about tunings!
Original Parks are made by Marshall. They were pretty much exact clones but also a way for Marshall to use up old stock. They were made as a favor for a friend and early distributor of Marshalls once the deal with Rose Morris was struck.
Sult kicks ass!!
Please do a rig rundown with Hippo Campus
refreshing to hear a true road warrior veteran believe in just simple dry 'ness
What is the bass amp next to the ampeg 8x10 right side of it?
"So you want a bag or not man"
What is that amp next to Dan's bass amps? I guess that is Neil's amp.
Free on steroids is on the money! I like that. The Free Alright Now tone has been my goal and yes, the extra gain just does it right.
For 21 minutes and 11 seconds Tim did the pee dance. ... for 17 years Tim stays put on stage and in this video he makes up for it.
Really though, one of the greatest rock bands to grace earth.

i agree paul kossoff had 1 hell of a guitar tone
I was recently roaming the mean streets of Bend, Oregon when a guy in tight pants and a beard ran up to me and said “HEY! Have you heard the new clutch record? “. I smiled and said “I don’t know what that means but thank you” and went about my business.
Mister Tee what's your deal man? Why are you spamming this message on the rig rundown vids?
needs more flannel
Great band their sound is huge yet simple setup. What happened to the other guitarist?
Dale Weber other Guitarist? Tim's the OG guitarist. I saw them once and Tim had broke his arm, so the tech filled in. Not sure who you're talking about though.
Neil plays on some stuff. The only time I saw them with a third guitarists was on the Robot Hive tour, but that was just a dude they brought up to jam.
This fukin shit sounds pretty good.
So awkward. I kept laughing to myself due to nervousness for both them. Still enjoyed it tho.
I agree, this was a weird one.
Weeeeelllllllll…….
This dude is too chill. I get it though. I would be the exact same. It’s hard to talk about yourself.
I don’t really get the awkward comments ? What interview isn’t slightly “awkward” lol
I agree. People are very critical. Human interaction is imperfect.
Lol Tim looks like he wants to be anywhere but there.
Can you try to find Ace Frehley and do a rundown?
Earth Bound?
EeaaAaaAaaAhhhh....
Damn, dude straight ragged on epiphone.Anyway that was no where near as awkward as these comments let on.
One of the times I saw them, 2004 I think tim used a plexi half stack with a super twin next to it. Park wasn't a cheaper brand originally they were true Marshalls named park due to a legal issue preventing Marshall from shipping at the time. They just tagged them park and sold them. Then in the 90s they were a solid state line.
SHOW THE GUITARS.
Tim is definitely baked here lol
Who wants to rock?
I am 2 years late but...well...I do!
I have mixed emotions about musicians who really don’t know what’s going on with their gear. On one hand I think cool they just like it so they use it. Done. But it bugs me how clueless some of them are about the gear they use everyday. Maybe it’s just to keep the secret sauce secret? 🤷♂️
Tim is an introvert so he has a few drinks before hand. He’s buzzing like a champ. Probably smoked out too.
Maybe he doesn’t rely on the gimmicks. Sick a £100 guitar in some people hands and it’ll sing.
Wheres Neil's rundown dude?
He kindly opted out.
Is Tim having a mild anxiety attack? Take it easy, dude :(
tollan23 maybe hes Just high af
Same thing haha
He's always been quiet during these rundowns
I feel like it's probably a lot easier to KNOW personally why you choose the guitars/amps/whatever you do than EXPLAIN why you chose them. They're two different skills, IMHO. Despite whatever awkwardness (if it exists), Tim has been a consistently amazing member of Clutch.

Radar detectors are illegal in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
P Wayne
Snitch
well i bet you cloaking devices are illegal too, goodbye
I want Jam Room on vinyl!
Clutch!! Hell yeah!! My band plays "Electric Worry". Not nearly as well as them.. lol. Clutch rocks harder than you. I don't care who you are.. if you're reading this, Clutch rocks harder than you.
Send me the phaser...I'll fix the popping.
Damn tim looking a lil strung out.
Ha, Eleven. Lol
Tim seems cool af, I don't what you neo maxi zoon dweebies are talking about.
Also, Tim might be using 11's, but the Reverend Billy F. plays 08's and arguably creates the guitar tone paradigm with them.
Dudes a Gibson guy
Park amps came about because Jim Marshall signed a shit distribution deal, so he started that company to make back some money to fund Marshall till the contract was over.
"uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuhhh"
So fuckin awkward! "Ahhhh"
Is Tim really high?
he was so awkward.
probably just needed to piss.
too much speed? or ready to get off the road and handle something back home. Cool guitars. I have a 67 SG like those. P-90s are killer
I think they are both in a Ket-hole!
He's the pee pee dance
LOL
The most awkward interview in Rig Rundown history. Both musicians seemed really uncomfortable.
ArttuAce watch the Mars Volta one their guitarist is very awkward
