I use to ride at the same barn as them with Fiona as my coach. Laura is actually crazy and didn't take no for an answer. She's hard to get through to and thinks her daughter is an Olympic rider and trainer. She even asked me if I wanted Gabby to ride my OTTB and see if she could fix some of his behavior problems (he was four fresh off the track and head shy so I wasn't even riding him myself at that point) They would be in the arena constantly when I was working him vlogging and taking up the whole ring so I was limited to what I could actually do as I didn't trust their horses. In the end I ended up switching barns and was better off for it. Found a better coach and my horse settled nicely.

Thanks for sharing your personal experience of knowing them. They seem to fall out with a lot of people in real life very quickly.Recently someone commented that they owned a lesson horse that they leased to Fiona, and they didn't even realise that dbd were putting videos of it on here every time the girls rode it, and they were making comments and constantly giving their uneducated opinions about him. Not that the horse cared of course, lol. But the young lady said that they weren't even considering the fact that he was up for sale at the time.

Thank you also for sharing your experience with them. I know I wouldn't get along with Laura. She is to brassy and bold, not only a know it all. I couldn't believe I heard her say she didn't know what a block barn was and she has one. Cement blocks made into stalls...wow that took me back. Now they are doing their own hay.....this should be good. Ya know Laura is going to boss Sam around.
Personally if I had a daughter taking lessons at that barn and I saw Laura video taping and shooting her mouth and laughing. I would be looking for a new barn no matter how far I had to travel. How can your child learn anything with that distraction. I can't imagine they have too many friends.

Also a huge problem is Laura being at every lesson to “record”. She’s constantly contradicting the instructors when it comes to Sophie. Which is why Sophie is not a good rider despite riding for YEARSSSS. Their trainer Fiona was/is trash. I liked Brandon, but I think he needs to tell Laura she can not talk or interfere with lessons. Sophie constantly whines and complains and will literally say she’s not jumping a certain jump if Brandon tells her too. And Laura ALLOWS Sophie to do this. Part of getting better at anything is pushing through the stuff that makes you uncomfortable. But Laura does not instill confidence in Sophie, more so panders to her being “scared”.
I watched the video of Sophie riding Finn on their test ride, and she legit cried. Red flag that clearly she was never ready for that pony. It’s extremely embarrassing that at this point, the Trainers are using them as a money grab. Laura saying that Sophie is a new young rider is just not true anymore. There’s no hiding anymore her lack of skills and progression in riding. Oh and in one of their vlogs with Chance, they mention how they had never lunged a horse before!! Are you fucking kidding me? I started lessons on a lunge line, and learning to lunge was a foundational concept.

    • @jrmints80

Brandans lessons used to be very active, he was constantly providing feedback and asking for more. Laura would always step in and say "no she needs to it this way, you need to teach her this way, oh well I thought she did this well". For his faults I think he does have knowledge and did try to share it but it wasn't shutdown and Sophie isn't really a driven student. Instead of dropping them like he should he's gone pretty quiet, partly for the steady pay and partly I think because he enjoys working with Gabby.

I recommended Warwick Shiller years ago with the first lease horse and they didn't care. They want to do it easy so I wouldn't say don't blame the parents, this is the path they have chosen, others have recommended they find more experienced trainers and they didn't care. Gabby even went on a weekend training camp with a proper trainer and she hated it because it was to much work.
I honestly have never met anyone whom would choose to stay with such and inexperienced trainer. Everyone I know would move on to a trainer that would improve their riding and horsemanship.

Vanessa. They don't care. This is as far as these girls are going to go. I hear Brandon say good Sophie and her posture and hands are all over. What kind of trainer ignores that.
They are happy doing what they are doing and honestly don't want to work to do better. I thought Gabby could be an excellent rider, but after her clinic I said to myself instead of listening and learning. She hated it cause the trainer kept correcting her.
She is still doing the same, so she doesn't want or have the desire to improve, cause she thinks she is the best. Yes keep going to Trillium in front of professional judges and see why you don't get in the ribbons.

I think another good point here that not only applies to their situtation but many is... more advanced or professional riders who are genuinely excellent horseman did not get to the "top" by using 1 single trainer. They take lessons and are advised by several different instructors throughout their life. So, while being loyal to one trainer is nice, branching out and seeking suggestions from other knowledgable equestrians who teach differently/focus on different aspects is HIGHLY beneficial to ALL riders. No one person is great at every aspect of riding. Plus, this would allow them to continue their loyalty with the current trainer. As well as help both horse and rider by getting input from a fresh set of eyes.

Good advice, as usual! I really don’t like this trainer they have. First, he let Sophie jump a lame pony, then he matched her with a horse that is way out of her range at this point and time. It upsets me because there are SO many amazing schoolmasters at age 15+ that are being offered for sale with plenty of years left and the wisdom to help her learn to make the right decisions. Yet, so much of the time, they get overlooked and sent to slaughter. It breaks my heart. But I also think people judging the family need to have some compassion and you’re right to call it out. We have all made unwise decisions when it comes to horses. My first horse never had a PPE. I didn’t even know that was a thing! But once you know better, you do better. At least that’s what I hope for these folks.

I've been taking lessons for 3 years and I have been searching for a horse for 2, it takes time to find out what you want to do with riding and it takes even more time to find a horse that's a fit for you.

I’m sure that their trainer has a financial motive to get them to take that thoroughbred. It’s clear his judgement is clouded by money. I know this because I’ve been a victim of this exact situation, someone that I trusted in the equestrian community as a lifelong horse owner, rider, and even rodeo queen. That horse put me in the hospital with a concussion. I couldn’t remember the last 2 years of my life for hours. She had a financial incentive to give me a horse that was dangerous, and rinsed her hands free of the situation. I was the one to suffer the price, I should’ve known better, but I trusted this person. They do not deserve to be in this situation.

To be fair to their trainer, having a parent in the middle of the arena with them while teaching takes away from his authority. I don’t why he allows it but it can’t be good. The kids fall back on their parent if they are being pressured to do something they think they can’t do. It just undermines everything. 🤔

I wonder if this might be a case of "Sunk Cost Fallacy": the phenomenon whereby a person is reluctant to abandon a strategy or course of action because they have invested heavily in it, even when it is clear that abandonment would be more beneficial. It's not just money either; the investment might be in admiration or belief. It could be that they're invested in their trainer, ie they really like him, he says things that seem to make sense and they've had him for a long time. So, they don't want to let go. Among other things, it would be admitting they were wrong and that's a hard thing for many of us.

She has the money for trainers yet hires the bare minimum and then crosses her fingers. I dont think she's mean or malicious, but at some point she needs to really do some soul searching and confront her need to be correct over proactive research. She could really use some problem solving skills and be open to experiment with new ideas. A solid groundwork foundation would improve their horsemanship immensely. Hopefully they move on from brandan soon.

I know and fully agree it's not a good idea, but I've been lucky to work things out and both of us learnt together. She's now a sweet horse that is calm and listens well to commands while I'm I'd say an intermediate rider who works part-time on a farm (walking clients, lunging, hall training etc.) I've never had a real trainer, but I've searched a lot of information and listened to advice from people who knew more than me. I was leasing a 18 year old Q-h for his last show season {Not his last time being ridden at all!} which he was being partially leased and ridden twice a week once by me once by the other little girl. We signed up for 4-h to just have fun and let him have fun his last show days. Unfortunately, we were told we "Couldn't show him in two counties." which was really stressful because we wanted to go aswell, We found chippy, a green broke 7 year old 17.2hh tb gelding. Now, Ive worked with green horses before so we bought him as a fun project. after we got him he was a sweetheart but the issue was he has never really been anywhere other than his og home. When we got chippy one of our first rides wasnt the best, He bucked me off twice but after each time I got bucked off I walked him over to where he was scared. Chippy did end up breaking my hand but I still decided to keep him, It took alot of groundwork for him to be "okay" for show. Now the last issue I have is someone was using a crop in our english-pleasure class and we were doing well and Im still super proud of him but, The person was going past us because there horse was "acting out" but, when there horse stopped next to chippy they repeatedly whipped there horse and whipped chippy on accident also hitting his flank now we didnt really desensitize his flank because I know where my legs are in the saddle. He reared up and I managed to stay on, Once he landed I preformed an emergency dismount and went to the middle of the arena petting him and re-assuring him. If a tb recently got off the track a beginner cant handle one its very difficult even for experienced riders because the horses dont know any better. Green Horses dont know any better.

Ur so nice and u care so much for horses I love it. Your legit amazing. I’ve started to realise horses are horses and if there not happy then listen to them. If a horse doesn’t work I domt walk away because I want to give my all to make it work. Had my Irish sports horse 16.2h for 10 years now and it completely took 5 years to sort him out. Never gave up and so glad I never got rid of him because he’s got the sweetest heart for such a big horse. Unfortunately he got arthritis from the dealer who sold him to us as they abused him and mentally drained him. I then got a 14.1 mare and she was so good, she unfortunately died a few years later of laminitis. I then got a 11,2 gelding and unfortunately he was dangerous. He threw me as a 6 year old girl into a truck window screen. He would rear whenever he wanted to, chase u out the field no matter how bonded you are. On a hack he would throw me in ditches and all of that. So we sold him back as he was nasty and made me loose a lot of my confidence. I then got a 12.2 and was a big regret but we tried and tried. He wasn’t the best of ponies but I taught him and he taught me. All he knew was Flatwork and he was 11 years old going on 12. He was a nightmare. Absolutely terrified on machinery, salt boxes, speed bumps , water, horsetrailer, horselorry and horse box and a lot more. Now he is 17 and legit the spiciest but sweetest boy ever. Hard to believe I was 7 and was able to fly 1m oxers after a few months of work because he was so willing after being scared of multiple stuff. Honestly he is insane and love him so much. I am now 14 so we have been together for 6 years now ❤

I love you so much Raleigh! Thank you for sharing and taking a different approach on this topic. This advice needs to be shared with everyone who wants to buy a horse or train their own animal. I've been retraining my twh for 3 and a half months, he was underweight and needed a lot of topline redevelopment. I've done everything you suggested and have a dressage trainer who taught me groundwork exercises that have made a huge difference in him. He doesn't stumble as much, he is getting more round and less stiff on his right. Slow and steady progress is as expected. We've had 4 rides of verying quality but progress is still being made. He still has a long road to full recovery but Amelia Newcomb Dressage, Your Riding Success, and on my philosophy days Artistic Dressage are all channels I use regularly with your videos. There are about another half dozen I'll randomly watch, occasional twh specific ones too. 🥰 lot of love to you Raleigh!

I only recently started riding (18 mos~) and I'm very lucky to have a stepmother who is very knowledgeable. We've started looking at potentially getting a horse for myself, and I've really figured out how vital it is to have someone have those hard, but necessary conversations regarding what level you are ready for. My trainer is great and will tell me, very straight forward what I'm ready for and my stepmother will as well. While, that makes horse shopping take significantly longer - it's also not putting myself or any animal that I buy at risk for failure or injury. So many people just want to tell you how amazing horse ownership is, and it's really important to surround yourself with people who will tell you the realities or horsemanship. I'm very lucky, I hope Day by Day can find those people too.

At the barn I used to work at, I took lessons from this girl. This girl was seen as the trainer at the barn so she was the one everyone went to. Honestly I was never impressed with her training with horses or people. She threatened to push me off a couple of times and was really hard on her horses to a point she wouldn't even allow the horse to walk beside her but like four feet behind her. Which was a really weird thing at that barn was even older riders would correct you on how you lead the horses, saying it was dangerous to have them beside you but logically it was more dangerous to have them behind you.
Any way this girl also threw me in with a green horse, not riding but lunging. Of course I was still new with it and the horse was really high energy and kept turning its shoulder into me after a while of her getting frustrated with me she took the lead and of course she went ham. I was still in the round pin and once the horse turned towards me that's when she told me to get out.
If you couldn't tell she was a Clint Anderson fan, after a couple more lessons she didn't contact me anymore on the dates for the lessons and I haven't went back there since.

My trainer suggested I get a 4year old off the track thoroughbred because I was at a point that that’s the next step and Dev was my first owned horse. It’s a wonderful experience but one thing that I can’t praise my trainer enough for is she recommended a more advanced trainer to work with Dev and i through the long process of training and conditioning a 4 year old OTTB. I had 2 trainers. It literally takes a year to two years to develop a horse the right way before even trying to jump them. It’s a long road I wish the best for them I just hope they take time to do research, take things slow and really get your basics down. If you as a rider don’t have a solid base, your horse can’t learn and work off the consistency they need.

If I could talk to this lady my advice would be, to turn the TB out and forget it for a good 6 mths. Whilst it out send the daughter to a local trainer that has a suitable mount for her. Make a mummy and daughter pack to get healthier and fit for when the TB comes back in. I would be searching for a rebreaker experienced in OTTB to take the horse for 6 wks yraining. When it comes back get a place for the horse and your daughter in a barn that offers experienced lessen trainers ideally. But if money is an issue bring horse home invest ibn a round yard and lessens 3 times a week for your daughter and the TB. That or just sell it now and try again.

@@alexjohnson611 tbf, not every horse needs a job. As much as I disagree with a lot of things they do I do not get the hate for having the ponies. They’re happy, get looked after, there’s nothing to be concerned about. They don’t need to be ridden or be worked, and as long as they can afford to and actually keep looking after them, they’re harmless. And really, it’s quite nice to see ponies be able to live a life in a field (well I know they don’t really use the fields at home for them lol).

Knowledgeable horse is such a blessing for green rider. Horses that gave me the most impact as rider on me was 20 and two 22 years old. One was 12 years old. But he was special because he had trauma as a foal and required me to use me and my tools differently. Which was really special and I loved to have different angle on everything.
Such a shame, someone can miss how wonderful experience it is for a new rider riding on experienced horse

I started out Intermediate when i got my 100% green 5 Year old horse, He'd spook at anything. When i picked my father's mare's hooves and put it down, He'd even spook at that. It wasn't a smart choice to get such a young horse as my first, but i went to multiple trainers, and I'm ready for him now. Defiantly not something i would recommend a kid do though. Thank you Raleigh for helping them. i just hope one day they'll use this info.

The two best things I've done for my riding are watching a lot of good quality videos (brain injury so I only understand by seeing) and getting a yoga ball so I can work on my core and positioning even when I'm not at the barn.

Trainers definitely make a difference and on young horses! I bought my boy as a 4 year old and was unconfident myself. I got stuck for a few years and didn’t move past a walk/slow jog. In the last 6 months I’ve found an amazing trainer and we are now learning to canter and do small jumps 😍 worth her weight in gold

I agree that the instructor and the one they just stopped working with at this barn, are very much at fault and not always doing what is best. I have never seen a good instructor NOT put a student on the longe line for lessons when they clearly have position and balance issues (this goes all the way back to when they first moved to the barn with the last female instructor). I have also noticed that instructor added in their current instructor when they newly bought Stella and the female instructor was having a lot of mounted issues when the girls were riding her and the female instructor could not ride or train Stella herself for the family. There were many times when the instructors had advised something (the purchase of a new horse) and it directly benefited them because it meant more money for board and lessons. I think just about every horse so far except the 1st lease horse (Sabrina) did not or has not quite worked out in the way the instructor said they would for what they wanted to do with the horse. When they naught Storm, the instructor told them that it would take her 2 months to get Storm to be where he needed to be for huntersor at least jumping well. That was a huge red flag and there are just so many more with the quality of education and teaching in the lessons. If you look back at both girls in their riding positions when they used to ride at the other barn before Fiona, you can see a drastic difference in everything position, alignment and balance. Since working more with Brandon, Gabby has become extremely crooked and twisted in her body and Sofia has not had the chance in well over a year or 2 to ride any horse in 1 saddle the fits her and that is terrible because you are 💯 setting your student up to fail and to fail the horse. I have told them about Schleese Saddlery for years and sent them links to their videos on saddle fitting and I have even sent them into on their new adjustable saddle and how they work all over their area of Canada.

Completely off topic lol, but I was taking private lessons at a barn and my lesson coach would just have me walk around. it was like that for months. My younger sister went there too but my coach didn’t show any interest in helping us progress and it was extremely obvious, i’m unsure if it was because she is still a minor but it wasn’t fun. After a year of trying to find a good barn i finally found one! i’ve been riding for a few months there and I’m working on perfecting my trot and canter! ❤️❤️

I totally agree with you. When you buy a horse you not only invest your money in it but you also invest interest, It is not just about buying a horse and letting someone else work with it, it is about the rider being interested in that process since it is YOUR HORSE. I have had my own horse for three years and today I can say for sure that that horse and I have come further than I thought I could. I love your videos and always learn a lot from them, keep on going 💞

Yup. And look how many breaks Sophie needs to rest in a lesson!. Its ridiculous. She does not push herself. How would she be able to train a horse when physically she can only do the bare minimum. She is extremely out of shape. She should have a western horse and just enjoy trail riding. Her competing is a joke. As soon She is slightly tired she stops and sits the middle of the area to watch!.
