Great job for a DIY! I would probably get the French drain man downspout leaf filter. That flex grate is a recipe for disaster with so much water escaping.
Nice video, one thing: they usually plow/cut the ditch beside the road after a couple of years to clean it up and recreate the water flow. Your outlet near the road would probably be destroyed at that time.
That is a very good point. I would totally keep the drain up from the ditch if this was in city. This is in the country and the road is not county maintained. I believe that the ditch maintenance is owner responsibility. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment 👍
The video narrator said 1/4" per foot but the graphic in the video said 1/8" per foot. Which is correct?
Dropping 1/4" per 1' is ridiculous. No need for it to be that steep.
Hi. I said a 1/4” per foot because that is what I did for the first run of pipe. But, I wrote in the graphic 1/8” per foot for longer runs, and I wrote in the graphic that if you look in the description box , there is a calculator that you can click on that will tell you exactly how far your drop should be depending on how long your run is. The longer the run, the less you have to drop in elevation. I hope this information helps 👍
How would you do this for a home where the street is graded slightly uphill(nothing major but there’s no natural fall)
Hi. If I’m understanding you correctly…the street is above the house and the house is slightly below street grade level. If that is the case, I would direct the French drain from the front of the house and around the sides of the home towards the back of the house so that it still drains away from the foundation. You kinda build a french drain, but it's going to work like a dry well. French drains are used to collect groundwater in places with a high water table, your problem was surface water. Your system puts water into the ground. French drains have barely any fall. If the beginning end is much higher than the lower end, the groundwater level won't rise high enough to enter the pipe.
I don't think the perforated pipe, stones and filter paper were necessary. How is the rain water going to get through the grass and clay soil? Just sending the roof water to the drainage swale would probably have solved your issues. A properly placed drainage basin may have helped some since you have water from the deck.
Sorry, but I would've run solid pipe to the front swale without stones or filters and left an unrestricted opening at the end. You also wouldn't have had all that dirt to get rid of.
