What does the lime and gypsum do for your soil and how often do you put it on?

      Good question!
Gypsum loosens up the soil structure allowing water, nutrients, and roots to flow through easier.
Lime makes the soil more basic by neutralizing any acid in the soil. That also allows the plants absorb more nutrients.
We take soil samples from all of our fields every couple years. This allows us to understand the chemistry in the soil, it tells us what we need to do to make the soil produce more and be healthier. So as for the lime, when the ph is too low, we will spread that to bring it back up to somewhere more neutral or basic. It is all calcium, this is also a factor in soil health. And for the gypsum is basically the same as we watch the soil tests. Some of the fertilizer we use will make a magnesium layer in the soil, not allowing water to pass through because it tightens the soil molecules (magnesium is in chloride to keep dust down on roads by keeping the smaller particles tight to the big ones). High concentrations of magnesium will make the soil structure tight. Gypsum flushes the magnesium.
Hopefully that answers your question :)
