The Japanese perspective on gender is interesting to see in comparison to American ideals. I was recently watching Kaiba and this portrayal of intense sexuality and heterosexuality compared to the main character being stuck in a women’s body was super interesting.
Bruh. I've seen fans convincing that Kaiba is so GAY for his arch nemesis Pharaoh Atem (AKA Yami Yugi), which is obviously not and there are people out there shipping him with his iconic ace monster Blue Eyes White Dragon (Blueshipping). I honestly can't believe that the creator decided to make a dragon waifu for Kaiba and I wish this wasn't real. But if I were to have an opinion on Kaiba's sexuality, I would think that he's realistically either aroace or demisexual, cause we've never seen him have any interest in anyone, especially women. And as for the main character being stuck in a woman's body situation, I think a lot of Yugioh characters, especially male characters, tend to look highly androgynous and flamboyant, which makes us question either our sexuality or gender identity. In fact, most fans would gender bend male characters to sexualise them as part of a male fantasy, but what if there was a female MC in Yugioh? Perhaps it would be a female counterpart of Yugi.
@@gigachadkaiba2700 Oh im talking about anime called Kaiba, not Yugioh… The main character quite literally is stuck in a women’s body in this anime. You put a lot of effort into your comment so go off, I’ll let you cook.
Anime has been ahead of the West in these topics for a while now. There are a ton of old anime with gay characters and there's a lot of new anime with gay characters to! Not to mention, femboys. Yeah I know they are not trans, but I still find femboys neat.
I find it so funny when people say that "anime is going woke" when jojo exists. Jojo may not be lerfect in first parts, but it was litteraly ahead of its time when it comes to reconstriction of masculinity, male fashion and gender roles. Also Araki was willing to have female mc even in part 5 and and featired openly gay couples in part 5
JoJo also had a trans male background character in part 6 (was around for one page, but he was pretty much drawn as a regular dude, but sadly misgendered by the guards) and I find Anasui's gender identity pretty interesting as well (how he was introduced as a woman in the manga, but then later on Araki started to draw him as an androgynous man). I really appreciate JoJo as a series, because it has helped me with exploring my own self expression and masculinity as a trans man.
Have to say with how the anime community tends to be (especially in latam) is so refreshing hearing someone speaking of lgbtq+ or gender themes, without the conspiracy lunacy.
Queerness in media has always been there and like any other cultures, we have significantly contributed to shape arts to what they are today. Queerness is much more than just relationships, its people, its art, its social issues, it's a culture. To deny any other aspects of that and water it down to just romance is insulting, and i absolutely love that people are realising how engraved queerness is in media. Because media is made by people, diverse people of different backgrounds and experiences, yet unified by experiences and issues and feelings and expression.
@@meisrerboot That still implies pushes on the gender binary are made. People are expected to act a certain way, and when they don't act the way that is expected of them due to their gender roles, they are inherently, queer for pushing on the edges of the binary
@@meisrerboot I'm not necessarily saying that being a femboy or Tomboy makes you gay, as in part of the lgbtq+ community. What I am saying is that it's queer (odd) to act as the opposite gender and overall not well received
@@meisrerboot Thing is, Dororo lives as a boy, and claims to be a boy. It's because her father raised her as a son, so she wouldn't be assaulted. She later returns to the protagonist after she is older, and has grown into a woman, and it's sort of implied they get together.
Anime has always had at least one character thats a guy who looks feminine or cross dressess, or simply a trans character, but we refer to them as femboys nowadays And theres also plethora of characters who are gay or gay coded in anime, and that always made me think that japan was more accepting of gender themes and sexuality
Nah, this only happened because Americans are incapable of separating gender nonconforming characters and trans people. Characters that are explicitly stated to be crossdressing boys in Japanese are turned trans in the west. It's quite annoying.
Straight relationships can be forced and handled poorly also. I mean I have like a list of media in which they introduce a straight relationship just because… and I don’t see many people complaining about it.
@anacastrodavila2689 people complain about random, poorly done, and forced relationships in media all the time. The difference is that when it's straight, it's not seen as forced political messaging, it's simply poor writing, so it doesnt blow up as much.
@Free_Palestine_75 That's because of the sour taste left in people's mouths from Disney and games affected by dei consultants like sweet baby. The creators of those outright mock and belittle the fanbase while destroying the fabric of the shows they love, making genuinely garbage films, admit to wanting to forcefully change the way people think, openly talking about how they use scare tactics to force companies to include dei in their media (if you want a specific example of this the CEO of sweet baby inc said it herself), and openly talk about how much they hate white males, straight people, etc. That is just scratching the surface. So, now, anytime it's present, people just assume it's another one of those - like what happened with furiousa thanks to the marketing. People assumed it was just some girl boss "I dont need no man" movie and didn't bother to watch it even though it wasn't and was actually a good movie (or so I heard. I didn't watch it simply because Im not interested in the character). This wasn't always the case. Anecdotal example: when the first last of us came out, I did not bat an eye when Ellie was revealed as a lesbian and I couldn't care less. When the kiss scene happened I didnt react at all but, if that were to have come out today (especially given the current state of naughty dog), I would have assumed it was just for a checkbox and likely wouldn't have even tried the dlc because I dont want to support people who again, bash their fanbase and are using an ip as an means to instill their agendas into my ahead and try to force me to share their views (and reiterating this again, people working on these movies and games openly say they do this. I am not pulling it out of my ass). Tl:dr far too many bad apples leave people with a negative bias and prejudice when inclusivity pops up in modern-day media. Edit: I ended up going on a rant and forgot what my original comment said. So, back to what the original comment was specifically saying, yeah you're right about it not being complained about to the same extent. That was the point. One is just bad writing, while one also mixes in politics, which is a super heated topic, gets trending a lot easier, and broadens the conversation surrounding the controversy.
@Free_Palestine_75 Yeah, that is their point. When a straight relationship is done bad people chalk it up to being bad writing, but when there's a queer well written or badly written there is almost always backlash from conservative fans

One day people will have to realize the "woke" is just social progression towards acceptance and has literally always been a thing and has literally always prevailed, the vast majority of people either simply don't care or support social change and progression and the group that opposes it is a small fringe minority, there is no "safe space from the woke" anime is not that, Warhammer is not that, video games is not that, you don't have a safe space from progression and if you do, it will not last, you can either live with it and accept people exist outside of your arbitrary limitations on what people are allowed to be, or you can shut up and sit in the back watching everybody else enjoy life like that one meme of Squidward watching Spongebob and Patrick run around
The anime fans who say this are often dudes who exclusively watch anime where the challenge of gender roles is more subtle or non existent. Like a butt load of harem anime is all i imagine or general male fantasy anime
Yes, shout it from the roof tops king 🙌! There's like so many cischet people who swear their favorite manga or anime is so straight and cisgender-- im not saying everyone is like this but there's just so many works of media thay have queer undertones and thats a good thing!
It is worthy of noting that while the Takarazuka Revue on the surface seems like a LGBTQ+ wonder of the early 1900s, it actually is not as great as it seems. It was run by men and the actresses were expected to live a certain way and the goal was to make "good wives". I am greatly oversimplifying everything here, but thankfully the current sociopolitical landscape of the world is leading to it being a little more like the yuri utopia you would think it is 😂
i want people to understand that bigots have always existed and the resent trends are an inorganic push to make these themes the center of media but many of the heavily pushed champions are FAILURES in some regard. like Witch from Mercury was, even for a cynical person at least a decent anime but sol many western movies and TV shows fall on their face at first because they were just bad but now they've created the added fact of people shying away due to new sht sharing similar themes, background motives, or even just staff as previous failures. anime hasnt created this problem for itself (yet) and so even if an anime was inorganically pushing a theme most people wouldnt really notice until someone properly sussed it out and even then the product still has a decent chance of being good
And that will even transferred to videogames. Yoko Taro is probably the first to add an intersex character to a videogame, when in 2010 he made Kainé as co-protagonist of NieR Replicat, and her character is so good and well written, because at first you believe she dresses like that for fanservice, when in reality she's trying to highlight her feminity due to the bullying she received when young for being partially a male.
Japan is such a conservative country, so trying to erase the strong progresive work found in manga and anime that so many authors have done be it for them being queer or being simpatetic to the queer experience is just criminal. It literaly refuses to recognize the legit atempts to break out of the excesive conservativism of the japanise society, some of which are severily hurting the country and its minorities to this day.
I DIDNT KNOW THIS I LOVE TAKARAZUKA REVUE SO MUCH I hope everyone who watch this video search more about it especially Yuzuka Rei because she just retired from being the top star of the Flower Troupe (shes the one acting as Ijuin Shinobu)

meh most of the times it depends on how its done. if it an important part of the story, cool i guess, but if its just a random ahh character that is just gay for no reason whatsoever no thanks you
Why do people need a reason to be gay? People are just gay, it's something they're born as, gay people exist. Do straight characters have to have a reason to be straight? Would you bat an eye if a random side character was straight "for no reason"? Why is there a double standard
@@Free_Palestine_75 idk i guess its because back in the day if a character was gay for no reason it wasnt a marketing strategy, now if a character is gay (and it doesnt have to do anything with the plot) its probably a marketing strategy. not saying this happens every time, but...

Steven Universe was heavily influenced/inspired by Revolutionary Girl Utena. Rebecca Sugar was a huge fan of the anime when she was young since it helped her recognize and feel comfortable with her bisexuality. This was during the 90s when LGBT was still largely looked down and made fun of in the media.
conversation of gender & sexuality have been a part of all art since forever... a certain specific culture just enjoyed burning those arts & punishing the artists.. What really confuses me, that as old as anime exist it always showed signs of lgbtq+, but whenever its talked about, its 'hated' between parents and elder people??? But those mangakas are also elder people, so really confused whats the majority opinion of lgbtq in japan
Queer and progressive people tend to have more talent in the arts. That's why the majority of conservatives (especially pundits) have a history of failing in arts. That's why _mangakas_ made progressive art but _executives_ cut it up and made it "traditional".
That's because not all elderly people were like homophobic, but I can't comment on the lgbtq opinion in Japan, it is probably best for u to form ur opinions on ur own.
The difference is it was done in an artist matter and not for cheap brownie points. You can have those theme as long as it well written. Someone that modern media dont have nowadays

I'm not homphobic or anything, but with all your shorts I've seen recently being about gender and sexuallity, I feel like an agenda is being pushed here. But maybe it's just me
This is quite literally a "its okay when Japan does it" moment. There is a huge difference between how Americans try and preach about gender which has soured many people's views on things and how Japan does it. People do not like being preached to or talked down to and Americans of all kinds try to brute force their views onto others which causes the issue. Thats the issue.
Miuchi Suzue, the mother of shojos' first work, and my favorite is a retelling of Romeo and Juliette, but "Juliette" is a transgirl growing up with Romeo as a boy in a Cinderella like fashion meeting him at balls and the balcony as her true self Juliette. This manga was written in 1971 Japan is way ahead the first western Trans character that wasn't a villain (because that would technically be from 1940 if so) wasn't till 2000.
So we’re just going to ignore the hundreds of anime supporting gender roles and stereotypes. City Hunter is an old manga and anime which displays this perfectly. But whatever. Gender roles have always been enforced/seen in anime.
thats because japan was largely an extremely conservative country the point of this video was just to show that these concepts arent being introduced into the anime world recently like some very ignorant people think
That said, the ox girl from one piece is a born girl, and do not wish to change, there's another girl in the same arc who has changed. And since ranma 1/2 is getting a remake, he's not into being a girl, the whole plot is him trying to find a way to permanently stay his born gender.

"wokeee!!!" And it's two men kissingor 💀

It's because her father raised her as a son, so she wouldn't be assaulted. She later returns to the protagonist after she is older, and has grown into a woman, and it's sort of implied they get together.
You mean girls can't be daring 🙃
Anime has always had at least one character thats a guy who looks feminine or cross dressess, or simply a trans character, but we refer to them as femboys nowadays
And theres also plethora of characters who are gay or gay coded in anime, and that always made me think that japan was more accepting of gender themes and sexuality

@@tomaliothetomato439Not to the extent of lgbtq+ though, people complain about them existing being forced

Fun fact, Takarazuka Revue is owned by the Hankyu Railway and was created to help boost ticket sales and draw in more businesses in the area
... By the way, the anime of "Ribbon no Kishi" is great.

Why do people need a reason to be gay? People are just gay, it's something they're born as, gay people exist. Do straight characters have to have a reason to be straight? Would you bat an eye if a random side character was straight "for no reason"? Why is there a double standard
same here, it's great when the characters feel more organic in their development instead of being a checkbox mark.
