    A fifth Conservative member is facing inquiries from the gambling commission, while Labour have suspended a candidate for betting against himself in the election.
    With seven days to go, the Labour and Conservative election campaigns would like to be talking about their policies. But all the public hears is “gambling scandal”.
    Ben Walker and Freddie Hayward join Hannah Barnes on the New Statesman podcast to discuss whether the election betting story is cutting through to voters, and the impact it might have on the election result.

    I liken it to the football betting scandals recently. Footballers can’t bet on football, not just games in which they are participating, because it can bring the perception of things being rigged, even if they aren’t. It’s a blanket no no. I can imagine something similar going into the guidelines for these things because it has just proven to be a simple way to undermine people’s faith in the system.

    Sure trust in politics has been low for a long time, but it's not a static sentiment. Trust in politics can still rise and fall within the low range. Trust is especially low just now because the Tories have exposed themselves to be particularly scummy, but there will likely be better days ahead once they've been rightly ousted from running the country. Point is, politicians can do better, and we should recognise when they do.

  • @KlausT

    The whole point with the betting fiasco is that politicians are meant to be held to a higher standard because they often portray themselves above the rest of us, so they have to be able to be seen above reproach. They get paid enough not to have to rely on side bets...

    So I personally have bet on politics before. I bet on Alex Salmond losing his seat to the Conservatives in 2017. I didn’t have insider knowledge I just had a gut feeling backed up by the convenient fact the week before the election was called, Scotland had local elections where the Tories topped the ballot in all but a handful of wards in his seat. As the Conservatives had to come from a distant third to take the seat the odds I was given were very good and I made a £400 profit on the bet. That’s the difference on betting on outcome you don’t know, but can take an educated guess at (the Labour candidate) and betting on something where you know you can’t you can’t lose because you are in the inner circle of the PM and he has specifically told you the date (the Tory gangsters) and I’m not ruling out Sunak being in on the betting and even having bet himself in some way given his history as a casino banker.

    • @nigelhardy7218
      @nigelhardy7218 4 дні тому

      If you are correct on Sunak's involvement he will clear off to California when there's the first whiff. I doubt he will be around more than a few months before calling a bye-election if he doesn't lose his seat next week. My guess is that he probably wants to lose his seat anyway.

    I'm not entirely sure how to feel about this. On the one hand: Betting against yourself is arguably a good insurance policy, in case you lose and find yourself without a job. But on the other hand: It creates a perverse incentive for you to put less effort into winning.

    Let’s keep perspective. Having a bet is legal and quite a commonplace activity - placing a bet with insider knowledge is illegal and thus a criminal offence - supporting a lunatic dictator responsible for killing thousands of innocent people is outright treachery and is thus a serious criminal offence . Vote Labour or Liberal for normal decency - anyone else you need to take a serious look at yourself.

    Really surprised how the team here think it's ok under certain conditions. In so many sports there is a complete universal and blanket ban on betting. This should be as standard for all political office. As soon as your name is on the ballot you are barred from any betting. Our cultural acceptance of betting and a 'cheely flutter' is cringe at best and won't age well into the future

    Actually, I'm afraid the labour candidate's behavior is, if anything worse. It's not a "lapse of judgement" it is a failure of character. These kind of Del-boy antics are insulting to his constituents (the feeling will be he wasn't even trying) and even more so to his constituency party ( he didn't trust them or respect their hard work). The party needs a good hard look at the selection process. It will be portrayed as an almost 18th century bought candidacy considering the hefty "donation" he made.

      Never understand why so many Brexiteers who voted for "sovereignty" and "making our own decisions" think that all the previous voters shouldn't be allowed to change their mind and all those who were too young but can vote now, shouldn't be able to express an opinion. All the main parties would have to agree to apply to the EU and would probably take a decade from when that started. The majority of current electors would have to want a negotiation for political parties to even consider starting it. Then there would be a chance to reject any proposal. I think deep down Brexiteers know it's been awful and some are pretending it's "cos it wasn't done properly" and those are heading to Reform. It will keep the tax avoiders happy for a bit longer I guess.
