Tying a CDC Comparadun dry fly with Barry Ord Clarke

This is a simple mixed wing comparadun that has a really nice effect. With a turkey biot body and a little UV sparkle mixed with the CDC and lemon wood duck in the wing.

Great video! Do you trim the stem tips out of the CDC feathers you use for the wings? I've seen other tiers do that claiming it helps the wings to stay upright.

I'm having troubles getting the wing to spread that evenly. Are you using whole cdc feathers, or is it a bunch of cdc prepared with the magic tool and the magic tool stacker?

Hi Johan, I am using whole short CDC hackles, but they should be very good quality with dense barbules, not long and thin like much of the CDC that is available. Once you tie in the CDC press it down with your thumb nail so you spread out the fibres so they cover the whole rear of the wing. Good luck.

@@Thefeatherbender It was a good question, Barry. Interestingly, I use the Magic Tool/Stacker method to tie this fly, and leave some of the trimmed butt ends on to aid flotation. I find that provides a denser bunch of CDC - with no barb waste. It's a really lovely pattern, particularly with as fine a body as you can tie. The same para winging method works beautifully with a CZ nymph hook as a later-stage emerger with minimal tail - and it offers greater stability, acting as a deeper keel if there's any wind.

It's an interesting fly but that is a ridiculous number of thread wraps in the pattern. I suspect you could greatly improve on that.
