  • Alex Lyon made some exceptional saves in Game 1 versus the Bruins, but was unlucky on two other shots. What did it highlight? There's perhaps nothing quite like the pressure of being in net for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Also, if a goalie makes a mistake, 95% of the time it’s a goal against, unless somehow their defenceman saves them or the person shoots wide on an open net or something. If a defenceman makes a mistake and gets walked around, they still have their goalie to protect them. If a forward misses an open net, you don’t have a point against you, the score just remains the same. Any mistake a player makes can be recovered by any of the other five guys on the ice, but a mistake by a goalie often results in a goal against, and in lyons case, a playoff loss because of it.

I played goalie for quite a while, not at the same level as Alex Lyon but still. Sometimes you get a game where you only get 20 shots but they’re all high-chance scoring opportunities. You can make a ton of great saves but if you fuck up, everyone remembers it. It’s a tough job but that’s why goalies like it. High risk, high reward.

As a goalie everyone on the ice can make a mistake besides you. As a goalie if you make a mistake, it’s a goal, or at best? They hit the post. If you watch players on the ice, they will make 3? 9? 18? Mistakes in a game. With nothing positive to their name. Bad pass? Doesn’t catch a pass? Misses the net completely? Really anything. Errors are errors. But that same standard isn’t held for players to goalies. Goalies are expected to play perfect. Goalie’s definitely have the hardest job on the team.

As a goalie I believe it’s the hardest position and my reason for this is that the margin for error is so little you make one small mistake and it’s a goal. You get scored on it’s your fault. The physical strength you need to make 50 saves a night is 1 thing but mental strength you need after getting scored on is a way different thing.

If you're looking for another great example of a team that got carried by their goalie to a game 7, go check out how Thatcher Demko got the affectionate nickname "Bubble Demko" in the Canucks round 2 series against the Vegas Golden Knights... dude faced like 120 shots over 2 games and only let 2 past him... once Markstrom got hurt, everyone thought the Canucks were sunk, Thatcher Demko nearly stole the Canucks way to the western conference final that year. I really do think he's another vezina caliber guy, he just needs the team in front of him to do something about it

I saw the talent in Ulmark in Buffalo. I picked him last year in my draft after he signed with Boston. I was one year off. I took Georgiev this year and he had a solid year. Started off shaky, but got better as the season went on. As an Oiler fan, I was totally floored when they signed Campbell. I did not and do not see him as even a back up in this league. I was hoping they would go for Samsonov.

So many slept on Ullmark in Sabres. Just look at his triple save last season where he got injured. Insane saves that nobody spoke of outside Buffalo city limits. He did play behind the worse defense in the league which was obvious and should be taken into account - exactly what Bruins did.

I'm thinking catcher is still a harder position than goalie. Similar concept, but you also control the defense, call pitches, remember scouting reports, execute gameplans, catch hundreds of pitches, all while still having to bat and run the bases.

goalie is ranked the hardest position with soccer goalie being ranked harder than hockey goalie at 1st and 2nd. People overlook that you have to slide perfectly on the ice and be able to skate extremely well to even have a chance to stop a puck. there's essentially no room for error as a hockey goalie

Maybe Ullmark isn’t _THIS_ good but he may just be a talented dude who’s found the right coaching. I’m betting he lowers his career GAA pretty substantially by the end of his time in Boston - hopefully a long time from now bc he continues being awesome lol

same for nhl goalie because of how low scoring is usually plus how many shots are taken per game. misplay the puck? turned over to the offense for a goal and now your team has lost the lead and any previous momentum. Pitcher has slightly more room for error.

@@jogendron6320 concussion, fractured limbs, tearing something, getting your literal throat cut open (look up Clint Malarchuk incident.) Goalie is just as or even more mental because the entire game rests on your shoulders plus if you get scored on enough you get shaken up. Goalies can get injured a lot more ways than you think and already have a shorter career than as a qb. How old did Tom Brady play to and still be good? Now when’s the last time you saw an over 40 goalie play well or even at all

Being a goalie is number 2 as toughest position in sports behind football quarterbacks. I don’t even watch much football, but it’s not even close, I mean look at the Avalanche last year with an average goalie. When was the last time a Super Bowl winner was a mediocre quarterback?

    • @hockeyplayer814

@Isaiah Vining Trent Dilfer won with the Baltimore ravens, Brad Johnson won with the Buccaneers, Eli Manning won twice with the Giants, and Joe Flacco also won with the Ravens.
