There's some really beautiful moments here: when the hands spin across the screen as she says "I lost his hand in the current", when the bridge comes and the snare pops just so, and again when the instruments die off for the final chorus and she sings so lovely. This music is so heartfelt it's dug its way into my heart.
I'm 55 years old and i love this band.

Man this song is so magical. The instrumental is as gorgeous as always, so are Molly's vocals (to a point where both almost synchronize in an infinitely satisfying way) and all of that is pulled together by the whiplash of the lyrics painting an atmosphere of absolute tragedy.
A masterpiece. Love Alvvays.

The moment at 1:05 for music, lyrics, and visuals is so perfect. It hits me with a tidal wave of emotions every time. To me it's about losing one's path in life and not a lost love. I lost myself, it was the life I loved, and now I'm left trying to put it back together.

I was browsing in a record shop in London when they put on Alvvays. Needless to say I got the record and it's been very dear to me since.
If alvvays, tennis, best coast, and wavves all went on tour together I could die a happy man.

Just found your band, all songs I have clicked have been great, this too, this happens very rarely when listening new bands
I just love that the last line in this song is “and now I am left burning through the trees”, and then the first line of Party Police (the next song on the album) is “walking through the trees”. Who knows if it was intentional, but I thought it was a nice touch to an already perfect album.
Wow I love this song and the feeling it gives off. A song about a person drowning which is quite sad but the music doesn’t make me sad. It in fact makes me appreciate life and makes me feel so alive. 👌

I fail to get the meaning of these lines. I only get the idea that she's somehow indifferent. Because she speaks of losing her love yet she seems to be dancing everywhere.

I was lucky to watch this awesome band in Victoria BC in I think 2018 and got to meet almost every member after the show! They are all wonderful people and even went out of their way to sign things for myself and friends. Hope to see them again and say thanks for the amazing melodies.
Seeing Alvvays in Toronto in Dec!!! Seen them twice before and followed them since late 2013, really good, glad they're getting the recognition they deserve

Brilliant song! The meaning about the song by me is likely a coward love when the romantic part it's no for both. She looks to give all her love but he don't and that's why she touches on ''And if I had known you couldn't swim
We'd never have gone in'', then ''I left my love in the river, The only one who sees, I lost his hand in the current, It was the life I wanted and I'd hoped for''.However, this has never been stated in interviews and Molly herself contends in NME that the lyrics stem from her isolated Nova Scotian upbringing.
