I'm an old guy (53) who kept hearing them on Sirius XMU; thought not a bad song in the bunch! Asked my daughter what she thought...she liked them too!...we saw them live in Milwaukee March 24, 2018! Great show! Totally affordable, too! See them before they get too famous! :)

Hello fellow Milwaukeean, have your daughter, and well, yourself check out Camera Obscura and Those Dancing Days. The former I'd say has got to be this bands main inspiration. I honestly thought this WAS Camera Obscura with a new album the first time I heard it :)

    Alvvays - In Undertow
You find a wave and try to hold on for as long as you can
You made a mistake you'd like to erase and I understand
"What's left for you and me?"
    I ask that question rhetorically
Can't buy into astrology, and won't rely on the moon for anything
    [Chorus]
    No turning
    There's no turning
There's no turning back after what's been said
    No turning
    There's no turning
    There's no turning back
    [Verse 2]
Meditate, play solitaire, take up self defense
When you get old and faded out, will you want your friends?
What's left for you and me?
You respond to my question metaphorically
Don't read into psychology and won't rely on your mood for anything
    [Chorus]
    No turning
    There's no turning
There's no turning back after what was said
    No turning
    There's no turning
There's no turning back after what's been said
    [Verse 3]
You find a wave and try to hold on for as long as you can
You made a mistake you'd like to erase and I understand
What's next for you and me?
    I'll take suggestions
We toss and turn in undertow
    Time to let go
    [Chorus]
    There's no turning
    There's no turning
There's no turning back after what's transpired
    No turning
    There's no turning
There's no turning back, it's so uninspired
    No turning
    There's no turning
    There's no turning back

Such a beautiful song. I remember when it first came out. I loved it, and enjoyed the lyrics, but they didn’t resonate with me during that period of my life. Shorty after fell in love with a close friend, overall wild experience, shattered perceptions and took me to some dark places.

3 years ago was your comment, probably you won’t read this, but crazy how your experience describes me right now.
I was madly in love with a close friend, still in love I guess. Very complicated story, met her during a turbulent time in my life where I had terrible self esteem, lack of confidence, work driving me crazy, didn’t really know how to express my feelings to her when it was appropriate.
We became good friends, but I feel like everyday our relationship is fading away. We see each other less and less. This is leading me to some dark places, thoughts, wondering what it could have been. Extremely hard to get away from those.
This beautiful song really feels familiar to me. I hope I can recover from this, the past months have been horrible and messy. Crazy how a song can bring so many feelings.
I hope you are in a better situation and state of mind. Couldn’t believe how familiar your comment was to my current situation. All the best for you.

@@geoffreythebutlerofanother300 Almost as if the music has brought people experiencing similar situations at different periods together.
I’m sorry you’re going through that, as our situations sound very similar, I think I can understand a lot of what you’re going through. If I could go back three years ago and give myself some advice, I’d tell myself pain is a part of the healing process, it’s okay to feel lost, hurt and absolutely clueless about your life at times.
I am doing much better now, and as crazy as it sounds, I wouldn’t trade the heart ache and misery of the experience for anything. While it weakens you short term, it strengthens you in the long run. Stay strong, give yourself time to heal and be good to yourself. You deserve it friend ❤️

My favorite thing about this song is the example of parallels, in the beginning you can hear “what’s left for you and me?” while towards the end it changes to “what’s next for you and me, which gives into further of the theme of the song of letting go of a doomed relationship.
Another example of this in the song are the lines
“Cant buy into astrology, and won’t rely on the moon for anything,” and “Don’t read into psychology, and won’t rely on your mood for anything.” which reflects her moods along the verses. In the beginning it talks about not buying into something easily deniable, but come second verse it talks about her trying to work out mentally, questioning his friendships and joining ways of meditation; but ultimately failing. Something so structured and solid like psychology can’t even fix the relationships doomed state.

This song and video is beautiful. I love the correlation of the moon to "finding a wave and holding on as long as you can." And the depiction of her being overshadowed by the moon at the beginning of the video. The artistic cohesion between the directors/producers and Alvvays matched up so well here. I am captivated.
