I view this like I view understanding ‘psychopaths (both people diagnosed with disorders that get colloquially called ‘psychopaths’ and people who commit crimes that get described as ‘psychopathic’ in nature. I support avoiding anyone who makes you feel like you or your children aren’t safe, or anyone who reminds you of your past trauma, and honestly I would do the same, if someone in my life were to come forward and admit they had some past with committing CSA/viewing CP. Idk if I would feel safe aroujd a true non-offender because unfortunately that’s not who I met, in my lifetime. But education in a level, non-emotional, clearly analytical way is good for helping victims of CSA heal, and helping parents to keep their children safe. Special needs/adults on the same maturity level of children are the ones I feel sorry for because they actually might be the exception to the typical predator (someone who offends). They may or may not understand it’s a crime. I’ve seen a few examples of lower functioning Autistic or low IQ people talking to teenagers in inappropriate ways where it’s possible they don’t know they are being inappropriate, and just don’t have adequate assistance in their life. It’s concerning for the child. It absolutely is, but someone who can be corrected with proper care, should be. I’m not saying whether or not they deserve legal consequences because that’s likely a case by case situation with these kinds of offenders (whether they are active or passive, violent or non-violent… that’s the court’s call and hopefully they know more than me). But even the classic offender (someone who is attracted to children because they can overpower them and enjoy causing harm to them), usually gets a pretty light sentence. I don’t know that this brand is redeemable, much like people who possess dark triads traits and commit crimes deemed ‘psychopathic’ by the courts. We absolutely should not handle this breed of pedophile the same way, because they could potentially be taught to do better and they could improve with proper care and guardianship.
Thank you for bringing light to a taboo topic-we cannot find answers or solutions without understanding the situation at hand
Thanks so much for posting this series. I work in this field and this kind of material is still very hard to come-by.
