Her full name is "김소향 (Kim, So-hyang)", but she leaves out her surname in her stage name, "소향 (Sohyang)". Here's the breakdown of the Hangul symbols in her full name:
      김소향 (Kim, So-hyang)
      김 = ㄱ ㅣ ㅁ (k i m)
      소 = ㅅ ㅗ (s o)
      향 = ㅎ ㅑ ㅇ (h ya ng)
Google Translate in Detect Language mode pronounces them decently. However, the proper pronunciation of her stage name can be heard before the start of her Immortal Songs 2 performance of "Bridge Over Troubled Water", when the host introduces her as "SOH hee-yahng". The "hee" part is very quick and subtle, almost like a puff of air after the "h" sound carried over from the stressed "SOH" syllable. Note that the "ahng" sound uses the first and last phonemes (syllable components) of "awe" and "song", respectively; it isn't "uhng" or "ohng" as too many non-Korean folks claim.

황성제 (Hwang, Seong-jae) [BJJ Music, Butterfly production team] is credited for many of the arrangements of Sohyang's big performances.
Of course, anyone who works with Sohyang will put in the "impossible" elements that only singers like Sohyang can achieve, and will take her recommendations into consideration.

김소향 (Kim, So-hyang) is a South Korean singer who uses 소향 (Sohyang) as her stage name. She's up there with Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Céline Dion, according to David Foster, who worked with all of them, plus other big names in the music industry, such as Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, Stevie Wonder, and Michael Jackson. In fact, many vocal coaches and critics call her the Queen, and Dimash the King.
Here are several links to excellent performances by Sohyang. Many are from competitions where she pulls out all the stops and goes into vocal beast mode. The last 5 are more restrained. You can alternate between the styles, just to experience the contrasts and see her range of abilities. All are live, except for a music video of "Never Enough" (since we can never get enough of Sohyang).

BTW, Whitney's former manager saw the DMC Festival video of Sohyang singing "I Have Nothing", and contacted Oprah Winfrey, who in turn, contacted David Foster. They were all amazed. Foster invited Sohyang to sing on his tour in Asia. She did 8 shows in 4 days in Tokyo. He and his ex-wife wrote that song. He co-arranged and produced it for Whitney for her album, and her performance in "The Bodyguard". Foster has won 16 Grammy Awards, including 3 for Producer of the Year, and has been nominated a total of 47 times.
      ---
Edit: If you prefer to avoid belting, then skip to the last 6 songs in this list. Whatever you do, don't review "Dream" or "Everyone" as they're way over-the-top performances in competition shows.

So Hyang can sing all genres of music from rock to rap (YES, she can spit bars).
So Hyang is a devout Christian and gospel singer from South Korea. In her early 20's and newly married, she was diagnosed with early stage uterine cancer, which left her unable to have children. After being completely healed by God and her doctors, So Hyang's goal has been to use her voice to bring comfort to people who are experiencing difficult times. She IS NOT motivated by either money or fame, and she has rejected numerous offers from major record labels. In addition to being a published author of several fiction books, she lectures about singing and vocal techniques at a South Korea university.

You witnessed a very small sample of the flexibility in the PHENOMENAL So Hyang's voice. In 2024, at 46 years old, not only is she aging in reverse, but she sounds better than ever, if that's even possible. Her vocal range is still RIDICULOUS, and her breath control remains INSANE. In 2018, after she thought her singing career was over, due to health and vocal cord issues, she viewed singing differently.

    • @kc3zt6jc7o
      @kc3zt6jc7o 9 днів тому +1

I've never heard of her vocal chord issues, have you? As far as I'm concerned, there were only several times of repetitive chronic pneumonia issues in her career.

@kc3zt6jc7o I watched a program where So Hyang was being interviewed. She said the vocal cord issues occurred around the same time as her Immortals 2 master class performance of "You Raise Me Up." She said it humbled her because initially, she thought, how could this happen to her?
I don't know if you're aware that some time prior to her singing "You Raise Me Up" (Immortals 2), she had been released from the hospital, still recovering from her latest bout with severe pneumonia. Her doctors advised her to cancel, to not speak, and to just rest. So Hyang did not want to disappoint the audience. Furthermore, she believed her singing career was over, and she wanted to sing on last time. After the event, sh3 disappeared from public singing for nearly two years.
      She returned in 2020.

Sohyang is an almost 100% self taught singer. She has only ever had five formal singing lessons, but they were with Seth Riggs while she was on vacation in California back in 2009 or 2010. He was completely knocked out by how great she was. She simply started singing when she was a teenager by imitating Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and Celine Dion. One of those people born to sing!

Sohyang’s concert in US this year was 2 hrs long. She shared the stage with another male singer. The energy and stamina and vocal ability she has is unbelievable. Yes. She does a lot of runs covering several octaves. And like other R&B, Soul Or Gospel singers, they bring it all. Vocal gymnastics it is.
Her performance of “Arirang” a popular Korean folk song was my favorite performance by her. It is said that she plays a critical role in the music arrangement . You can hear her many different styles on the ‘Begin again’ program where she sings with other popular artists in an informal setting, busking on the streets and parks of Korea and several cities in Europe. Begin Again by JTBC is a show you should react to. The quality of music will surprise you. Many artists play their own instruments as well. They do have several English covers.

I would never have considered such flamboyance for this song. I grew up with Simon & Garfunkel. They were more on the quiet side (folk), even with crescendo. She’s very talented and has great vocal control, but my heart started pumping hard with the level she was singing at. Thank you so much for this video today-it’s just a great message. 🎶 Cyd

@BeverlyBurch: It's a live TV show featuring 7 popular Korean singers. The episode required each contestant to choose a classic "pop" song from the West, but performed in their own new arrangement, not a sing-along cover. Sohyang goes from angelic voice to vocal beast to display her vocal prowess for the competition. [The guy in black with eyeglasses, who closed his eyes and mouths the lyrics, is Korea's well-known DJ who introduced many Western pop songs to Korea.]
If this "big" style of hers isn't your cup of tea, you can avoid her videos from competition shows, and experience her other songs. "Misty", "I Will Always Love You", "The Power of Love", "Never Enough", "Flashlight", ... aren't over-the-top with powerful belts.

This amazing woman can belt for days. She is widely regarded as the ‘queen of mix’.You say this is to show off her voice but trust me, that would be the last thing on her mind, this woman can sing any genre, but gospel s where her heart lies, but she only ever sings to serve the song & the story. This will be more apparent the more performances you see because you will then know what she is capable of yet makes choices that don’t show off what she can do, if that makes sense. I don’t know if you like jazz but something quieter you said you prefer so highly recommend you check out her performance of ‘misty’ from the ‘begin again Korea’ series which were acoustic performances done during Covid in front of very small socially distanced audiences & very little musical accompaniment ( I think this is where the best singers really shine) or maybe her performance of ‘I will always love you’ from the same series, but from a different venue.

Thanks for the great reaction. This was from a competition show where in Korea very accomplished singers are invited onto the shows. She and her team arrange all her performances. She is my personal favorite female voice on earth for exactly her ability to display all of her vocal tools. It seems she does this in many of her performances, but not all. There are many other performances where she chooses not to, though she certainly could. One example is her version of the old jazz standard 'Misty' from the Begin Again (Covid time) concerts. She is a savant and an amazing human being with a very compelling backstory. Thanks again for a great break down. I am a new subscriber.

We all wonder if Sohyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself, with the input of her in-law family and musical assistants, teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages: Korean, English, Vietnamese and Chinese, as well as reading French and Greek!
Let me catch my breath. OK.
She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all eagerly worked with her when they were in Asia.
She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: ua-cam.com/video/te_L9ofhUt8/v-deo.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere!
She just turned 46 on April 5, 2024, though in Korean culture she would be 47 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone,” their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527
While being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she decided to enter a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international attention from the performances being posted on UA-cam.
Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on UA-cam and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted Sohyang and went to Japan in order to have her perform eight concerts with him at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018. For those who don't know, David Foster was Whitney Houston's producer for some of her songs, wrote "I Have Nothing," her most iconic song, and is the most famous and influential music producer in the world. He places Sohyang right beside Whitney and the rest of the top tier divas.
Here is the interview where Sohyang related the events: ua-cam.com/video/EqeE_1nP-Kk/v-deo.html (Be sure to turn on English subtitles.)
Here is the version of “I Have Nothing” Oprah, David Foster, Whitney's former manager and the rest watched on UA-cam: ua-cam.com/video/T4UyIMkdy4M/v-deo.html
She preceded it with this blockbuster: vimeo.com/312061203
She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 16:25 “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.”
In a South Korean television interview Sohyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. Sohyang says she saw herself in that young woman and then understood that God was keeping her from developing self-destructive character by withholding international celebrity status from her. ua-cam.com/video/rl-jX9kBsEs/v-deo.html (Again, turn on English subtitles.)
So as a consequence she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no interactive social media presence whatsoever.
What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her! And whether Sohyang likes it or not, fame has found her, run her over and then backed up and run over her again!
On Oct. 5, 2020, it was revealed that Sohyang turned down _yet another_ contract offer, this time from Sony Music US. www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20200921000995
“Debuting in [the] US was my utmost goal for the past 20 years. But when I got a call from the US agency, I politely rejected, as I realized that what I wanted most was not becoming famous,” she said.
“I think singers are very susceptible to arrogance, especially when they hear the screaming from crowds on stage. It can make you feel like as if you’ve become God.”
“And I’m perfectly okay with sharing my music via UA-cam, which can reach tens of millions of people all over the world without making me feel stuck up. Maybe that’s why I was born in this era.”
Sohyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out, and so humble and genuine, with a stage charisma, facial expressions and smile that is off the charts.
In Korean dictionaries 소향--Sohyang--has several meanings.
    • First is a type of Korean traditional music.
    • Second is to burn incense on a burner.
    • Third is to go toward.
But these meanings are rarely used today. Sohyang is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. Yet for the definitive answer Sohyang has stated in an interview that her name means "enjoy the light." Her grandmother named her.

And finally “Will You Be There”: ua-cam.com/video/nBdSpexUxik/v-deo.html
Here’s an English language interview with her that I’m sure you will enjoy: ua-cam.com/video/N2u_pmoWxj8/v-deo.html Her English is perfect when she sings and almost perfect when she is doing interviews.
    OK, I’ll stop gushing now.
Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer Sohyang's assistants revealed (a bit to her chagrin, as she is a self-effacing person) that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Since she starts at D3 that is more than a 4 octave range ... so how about them apples???! Here it is: ua-cam.com/video/VnPAkryrygQ/v-deo.html I know, bananas isn’t it?
Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published fantasy novelist and has a theological treatise on the Book of Revelation in print. In addition, she is a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean stage production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist. She taught herself English by watching Disney's "The Little Mermaid" 'about one hundred times' when she was just a kid, speaks English with a _perfect_ North American accent and has an outgoing and bubbly personality.
She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do? Ironically, Sohyang stated in another interview that both she and her in-law family were surprised to discover that she could sing so excellently!
Though she is maybe 5' 4" and only about 100 pounds, Sohyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it, and then re-emerges when she is done. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way.
I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people Sohyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear, and that is important to note as these are _essential_ elements of any great musical production. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else.
As you can see, I am a shameless fan. 😉

It's a live TV show featuring 7 popular Korean singers.

Thank you for reacting to Sohyang! She’s a master of the mixed voice and her pitch accuracy is so good it gives me goosebumps. Belting is one of her strengths, but you liked the soft part better, so I’ll suggest quieter songs. Try “Amazing Grace” at the radio station and her Begin Again Korea solos.
Just fyi, most of the songs requested in the comments are similar to Bridge, powerful gospel singing on TV contests where she has to stand out to win. Be prepared for sustained belting!
Gospel music wants to move us emotionally, physically and spiritually. The embellishments and belting overwhelm our critical mind, make us focus on our hearing, not just sight, even change our breathing and heartbeat to carry the audience on a cathartic spiritual journey. I’m not evangelical, but I’ve heard enough gospel music to know the patterns and effects on people. She’s a genius at it!

Are slow jazz and soul too close to gospel? She did quiet performances for the Begin Again Korea series. They're acoustic, not contests, and the mood was somber because of Covid. Sohyang (pronounced as “So-Young”) she is from South Korea. I’m 73 years old and to me she is the greatest singer I’ve ever heard in my life. She not only a great singer but a beautiful person both inside and out. She first began singing in her local community, with no aspirations of pursuing a career as a professional singer. She was offered numerous contracts from major record companies, but she turned them down, because it would interfere with the plans God had for her. She is a devout Christian and has said that her goal in life is to use her voice to comfort people who are going through difficult times. She knows what hard times is like, her parents divorced when she was in her third year of high school and due to this, she experienced a lot of financial difficulties and was often very sad and she said that it was music that helped her through these difficult times. At the age of twenty she got married and soon after was diagnosed with uterine cancer, which she was able to survive, and she gives the credit to God. She is also an author of children books since 2013. Another thing is that she does all the arrangements for the songs she sings. SHE IS THE BEST EVER

Personally, I could listen to her sing for hours on end. Her voice does REALLY good things in my head. There at the end, I also loved how she not only SANG, but she DEMONSTRATED that power. WONDERFUL! The triumph of the finished song wasn't in the words or in the music in general (no matter how good THEY were). The WIN came BOUNDING out of that slight figure. Can you see a bully starting to take on that "little girl" who looks so feminine and beautiful, and then hear that VOICE and that ATTITUDE jump out at him (or her)? I'm thinking a bully would turn and run, rather than take on that particular "little girl."

    📌Welcome! Who is Sohyang?
Kim Sohyang (called Sohyang) * 1978 in Gwangju, South Korea. She is self-taught and a real all-rounder.
Sohyang comes from poor divorced parents. As a teenager, she converted to Christianity and planned to become a cartoonist and artist. Instead, she joined a band and married drummer Kim Hee-jun. She started singing late and has no formal vocal training, but since has had some lessons from Seth Riggs (American voice coach). She arranged all her songs herself.
Shortly after the wedding she had to have an operation and was told she could not have children. She was then 21 years old.
She decided to devote her life to singing for God and the comfort and joy of people. She is also a fantasy novelist, gives singing lessons at the Music House Academy in her home town and is a guest speaker at a university.
She made her singing debut in 1996. She only became known in 2012 through her participation in the second season of the Korean singing competition I am A Singer.
Sohyang became the first Korean female artist to sing the American national anthem at an NBA game.
After the huge success in 2017 in the "King of Mask Singer" (Korea), Sohyang’s appearances became less and less. She was struggling with severe pneumonia, which came back eight times and almost took her voice away.
Sohyang, hailed as "Korean Mariah Carey" for her outstanding vocal skills, shared how obsessed she was. She didn't want to damage her reputation, didn't allow herself to make any mistakes. So when she was stripped of sheen, all she could do was repent and reflect on her Christianity. She realized that the most important thing as a singer was to comfort people about not being perfect.
She rejects contract offers from major music agencies for reasons of belief (Sony Music in the USA). She says, "... I'm perfectly fine sharing my music on UA-cam, which can do to tens of millions of people around the world without feeling stuck. Maybe that's why I was born around this time."
Sohyang's vocal type is a lyric soprano, specifically a Full-Lyric Soprano. Her vocal range spans from D3 to A6 (supported range from G # 3 to E6), a total of 3 octaves, 3 notes, and a semitone. She is known for her emotive and powerful vocals, with characteristics being a homogeneous, rounded, and bright instrument of remarkable beauty and meticulous control. (www)
Even if she is not the most famous singer in the world but she is one of the best. 💥This woman is fire!!! The Greatest Belt Queen Ever!!!💥
    Greetings from Germany

Please listen to So Hyang's cover of Ella Fitzgerald's Misty. She regularly sings this song at concerts; there is nothing pretentious or contrived to shock the listener. The only thing there is the singer’s amazing vocal abilities.

SoHyang does own a powerful and impactful voice though I prefer her softer way of singing, like in the first section of this performance. I love the original version of this classic and I also appreciate the version included in Jacob Collier’s new album. Thank you very much for another great analysis, Sir!

SoHyang is a wonderful artist and I love most of the songs I have heard her sing. To my ear, however, this is not one of them. I remember hearing an expression years ago describing a gospel singer - over-souled. It came to mind as I listened to this today. For something quite different from SoHyang may I suggest her rendition of Misty from Begin Again Korea, I love it.

Sohyang, with the help of her in-law family, is responsible for the arrangement, as always.

Most men are crying when singing this song. It's hard to make money in the world,
And it's a really accurate interpretation and review. If you want a resonance sound, listen to Sohyang friend Park Kiyoung's song,
    I'm sorry about the translator,

I also prefer the 'less showy' arrangement and vocals from SoHyang for the most part - mostly because I feel like her vocals already possess that innate power that doesn't really need all the extra show and drama to get through to the audience. Personally, I recommend the video of her singing Amazing Grace in a studio setting but live. Or, you might also enjoy her version of I Will Always Love You from a TV show called Begin Again.

The jazz standard, "Misty", is a great example of her singing abilities using quieter vocals.
