I’m a newbi to RVing. Thanks for the video it was great and save me money by convincing me I could change the Gen Oil for my first 50 hours and annual oil change. Also I learned how to set the service hours. Thanks Again David
Great video and very helpful. I just did the first oil change, 20 hours, and I only got one quart of oil. Yes, that includes the filter. I was able to fill it with two quarts just fine.
Great lesson! Thanks for your clear direction. My oil filter was put on by Arnold Schwarzenegger too. That filter was excellent except it slipped around. I put some shrink tubing on the grips and that allowed it to hold it. Thanks again!
Even though I've done this once already, this video serves as a great reminder of the procedural steps needed to get the job done better. Thank you for making the video and stay safe on your travels!
Thanks for the Video. 30 year RVer but have a New 5th (3rd RV) with an Onan 5500. You flagged a good point on the GenSet assemblers putting the oil filter on too tight on initial install. Thanks for the tip on what Oil Filter tool to use. My oil filter "strap" was too big, and getting a bottom "Cap" style likely would have stripped if I attempted to buy/use one. Found the oil filter tool you showed on on the Video on Amazon for approx $8. You need a tool that tightens around the filter as you attempt to unscrew the filter. Going slow the filter started to loosen on the 1st attempt without distorting the oil filter. Thanks again for the tip. I am sure it save me a bit of hassle (and aggravation). Happy Travels....
Chuck thank you for the very much needed information on the tool you used to remove the oil filter. I ordered one just came in today. Thank you so much Herb

I am a new RV owner and this is the exact generator I have. I did not have a clue how to do this and you have shown me way more than the dealer did about this generator. I didn't even know it has circuit breakers or that you could start it right on the generator! Thank you so much for putting this on youtube. I am off to change my oil now. Oh by the way, my book said change it after the first 50 hours and then every 150 or annually after that. So I blew past the 50 hours by almost 40 but I don't think that will make a big difference I hope! I guess if there are no iron filings I should be good to go. Thanks again for this video!
@@GetGonewithUS I turn 70 this year and haven't changed oil in anything since my late 30's! Your video made it so simple I couldn't believe it! I bought the filter from Amazon and took it to the auto parts store and found the exact tool that fit the filter perfect and made it so easy to take the old one off. The auto parts store even disposed of my old oil for free. Next is changing the oil in my V10 engine!

Excellent video, nice tips. One suggestion, when pouring oil into the engine put the spout at the top edge of the bottle and pour. This way it pour without the glug and seems to have a better reach.
Great video! Really appreciate the help. It was like having my old man showing me how to do the work. Hes passed and we never had a rv. So appreciate it!
@@GetGonewithUS I was able to successfully get the job done! So glad I did. When the generator was serviced last year (fouled coil at delivery) the oil drain tube was caught under the generator. Had the valve been opened without seeing this first... oh what a mess that would have been.

i live in nebraska and my friend who lives in wisconsin called me because he is having a hard time removing the oil filter from his onan generator,, well i told him that he's in good luck because i am planning on making a trip to wisconsin next week and i told him to hold off with the generator and i will do it for him.
Good luck, they are tough to get off the first time. We wrapped some rubber from a bicycle inner tube around the exposed part of the filter, then put the filter wrench over that. Grabbed the wrench as tight as we could, followed by a couple of choice words and it came off. Be careful near that shielding, it will cut skin easily...ask me how I know! LOL
Thanks, we thought we would try a new opening, you guys are the second to notice. Enjoy the new country, we are looking forward to coming along to see it! 😃
Hey Get Gone with US, I agree let's go find the guy at Onan Manufactory who tightens the oil filters on. Finally got mine of after the same procedure a few choice words.LOL Thanks for the video new subscriber here.

I live in my older RV full time. Most RV parks will not allow you to do any maintenance (anything involving fluids) so take care of this before you hit the road.
Glad to see you working Chuck. Lol. Getting that filter off took some doing. I think some things are made difficult to do on purpose in hopes you'll take it to the shop. I changed the oil in my 4000, but I don't have an oil filter to mess with. Keep up the good work.
Hi Carl! The filter isn't that bad after the first time you take it off. My biggest problem with the 4000 we had on the Class C was the start button was too close to where you put the oil in and occasionally my hand would bump it while filling and that made quite the mess. LOL
Great video. One video I don't see is on changing your house batteries. I would love to find one - especially with 4 batteries mounted in the steps - that is the way my Tiffin Allegro Open Road 2016 36LA is.
Thank you so much for this video, very helpful. Just have one question... it looks like you didn't use the filter wrench when you put the oil filter back on, look like you it's tight enough just by hand (without wrench), is that correct? or did you use the wrench to make sure it's tight enough? It's my first time doing this, so just want to make sure I do it right... thanks again. Pierre.
You are welcome Pierre! I did not use an oil filter wrench to tighten it. I have been doing oil changes on all sorts of engines for over 40 years and have developed a feel for the tightness. For first time I would recommend you use the wrench though as per instructions. Good Luck! 😀
I found mental to mental slipped. I cut coating off of a 10/3 wire I slide that over the 3 tabs worked good. You were right about filter being put on tightly. Thanks.. This week is oil change on the new 7.3L V-8. Great video's.

Good video. However I found if I fill our 5500 up to the full mark after about an hour (give or take 15-30 minutes) the unit "stammers" and shuts down. I found a video where an engineer type (had the same problem) was looking at the dipstick. Determined that it was designed wrong. He lowered the level the "add" mark and the problem went away. I have a question. I noticed you use 15w40 diesel oil. I thought about that too. I don't understand Onan, I think they went with15w40 so we would need to buy their oil. I was thinking of using Mobil1 10w40. We already know Onan doesn't recommend synthetic oil, only because they say it isn't necessary. We know that synthetic is far superior to regular motor oil. 40 weight oil is 40 weight oil. When it come to temperature synthetic can take higher temps, better shear strength, it neutralizes acids better and the list goes on and on. The 15w40 doesn't meet all the specs I found online. It says API class SJ, SH or SG and can be USED WITH CH-4 CG-4 or CF-4 so it would be like SJ/CH-4. How many years has that oil worked for you?
Hey Chuck thank you so much that helped me out a lot. I change my diesel oil in my truck and then some of the similar things you talked about, but have never done the generator , because it's brand new.. thank you for that little bit of extra we appreciate it one question we were going to ask was do you normally change the oil 20 hours for 250 hours when it's brand new? I did exactly what you did but when i turned that screw...no oil. What am I missing? Did you undo that large plug first? The one that looks like it has green locking fluid on it. Thanks
Hi, Sorry I didn't get back to you, we were gone all day. Glad you figured it out. I would not have guessed a spider's nest. Thanks for sharing that for others who might run into the same problem. Hope the rest of the oil change went well. 😀
@@GetGonewithUS it did and thank you so much. It was either a spiders nest or a hornet because as soon as I jammed a screwdriver up that rubber drain tube - there was definitely something there and then suddenly oil poured out! Thanks again 👍
Do you buy your oil and filter from the dealer? Would the automotive parts place have the oil and filter thats recommended for the v10? Thanks great videos
Extremely informative and helpful video! I do have a question; ' the front cover (on the ONAN) states that the oil capacity is "2 qts. with oil filter". However, it appears that you used almost 2 1/2 quarts if you included the oil poured into the filter.' I'm sorta confused on that issue. Should I purchase 3 quarts for my impending oil change?? Thanks for taking your time to illustrate to us, the steps to do this oil service.
I have the 4000Q so no oil filter for me. I switched to the Rotella oil last year from Castrol. I like that drain plug I don't have that. I exercise my generator every 2 to 3 weeks with load for about an hour. Have you ever tried the SeaFoam hot soak to clean the carb? I do that also every spring. Always great videos, Lou.
Hi Lou! We had the 4000 in our Class C and I agree with you, the drain plug is a lot easier. I haven't tried the sea foam, I'll have to look into that. Thanks for the tip. 😃
@@GetGonewithUS Oh that's right I forgot you had the Class C before Maggie. I did a video on it following Seafoam recommendations. It is listed on my channel as generator maintenance and exercising. I think it seems to help. These Onan generators are famous for getting the carbs clogged.

We have links to the filter on Amazon in the description description box under the video.
Will the 5500 run both air conditioners at the same time? Thanks
It runs both of ours. 😀
Chuck, I was wondering if that’s 2 quarts plus the filter, or iOS it just 2 quarts period? Thanks
Hi Mark, it is 2 quarts total. It may take a bit of time to get both in. 😀
Extremely informative and helpful video!
I do have a question; ' the front cover (on the ONAN) states that the oil capacity is "2 qts. with oil filter". However, it appears that you used almost 2 1/2 quarts if you included the oil poured into the filter.'
I'm sorta confused on that issue. Should I purchase 3 quarts for my impending oil change??
Thanks for taking your time to illustrate to us, the steps to do this oil service.
2 quarts, exactly what is shown at timestamp 1:50 in the video!
Hi loved your info on generator, 1 question can we put synthetic oil ?
Thanks Dom. I have heard people use synthetic oil in their generators without a problem. We personally do not use it ourselves. 😀
Does your generator ever overheat and shut down driving down the road?
No, I have never had that problem.
Thanks, we'll check it out! We had the Class C for 10 years and never had a problem with the generator or anything really. Maggie on the other hand is 'Special' lol, so we better check it out. 😃
What's the difference between your 5.5kw Onan and the 5.5HDKBA ?
Mine is gas the other is diesel.
Is the 2 qt. inclusive of the oil you put in the filter
That is what our generator took, check your manual or online if yours is different.
Thanks Chuck excellent video, have you noticed how hard it is to find Rotella? I’m in UT hard to come by as of late.
Not here.😀
The documentation from Cummins was god-awful. I thought, there probably is someone that can dumb it down so that even a rookie like myself can do it. I was right! Thanks, Chuck and Cheryl!!!
You are welcome Timmy! 😀
