Imo the term "coupe" should be reserved for 2-door sport sedans. Some brands are calling so many cars coupes, even vehicles you would think looked more like SUVs or crossovers. This car for example should be a sedan or sport sedan.
Hey Alex somehow I missed this CLS review. You mention many times over about Start/Stop System in autos that Cut the A/C when the STOP is Active. I own the 2017 LT Impala with the 2.5 LITRE and Start/Stop that will keep the A/C running ice cold but not at MAX output. It will lower to just above Low setting on the fan but will continue to blow ice cold for roughly time at the Stop light to turn Green about a minute. Then the engine will fire back up on it’s own if I am not moving yet. The stipulation is that the A/C needs to be on economy and not at MAX setting. And the MPG with the Start Stop in the City has been easily 23/24 MPG and way over 35 PMG HWY. I’ve even gotten 39 MPG on a trip to New Hampshire and back from Mass. up Rt. 31 to Rt 119. Lovely Drive. I love the technolgy here in the CLS but would hate to pay to fix any non warranty repair. You’re the VERY BEST ALEX~! 😉
Great looking car & thrilled to see the I6 making its way back into Benz’s. Can’t wait until this engine package makes it to the wagons. Love your review & how you keep the purchase price in mind when making each decision - that’s exactly what buyers do. 👍🏼
Hi Alex - thanks for the review. You are incorrect I believe, about the E450 power plant. The E450 remains a non-electrified biturbo V6. However, power and torque numbers remain the same I believe as the new mild hybrid inline 6. The older technology in the E450 versus this new technology in the CLS explains in large measure, why there is a very big price jump between the two vehicles. So it is a touch more than a styling exercise. Cheers
I'm actually not a huge fan of this new CLS looks - the profile is nice but the details are not as well integrated as earlier CLS. The interior is still a hallmark of quality & design - while Audi has more screens & Tesla an even larger one, the design is just so classy that I believe would age a lot better than those touchscreen spam that is so prevalent in luxury cars nowadays. The real draw is the new 3.0L Inline 6 turbo hybrid. First the I6 from something other than BMW is a welcome return to Mercedes. The mild hybrid design is intriguing as it reminds me of the old Honda IMA system but with a larger battery + electric motor & everything from AC compressor, alternator & water pumps shifted over to electric operation is a lot better in practice. Considering how smooth Alex makes it out to be, it could signal a trend going forward as electrification advances but not fully replacing ICE cars as a whole with real world MPG benefits.
A complete design faux pas that had so much potential. After they decided to make the C & E class look so similar to S class, and now this, I'm not sure WTF's going on with their design department.
I’ll be in the minority but I like it. I definitely like it more than the second generation with those pontoon fenders. With better rims than the one he tested this is a good looking vehicle.
I really can’t decide if I like the styling of the new CLS. The first two gens were immediately recognized as beautiful, but this one is taking its time to please my eye. The larger wheels and higher optioned cars do look better though, maybe it’s these ugly wheels that ruin it for me... and the taillights...
This car weighs more than a 7 series and charger 392. Thise sre impressive numbers for the Power. Feels like the power is combined to produce that speed. Cls 5660 pounds, 7401 xdrive 5630lbs, 392 5400lbs and those cars are considerably bigger
It'd be interesting to see how this model does. The positioning of this product is weird and like Alex said, I cannot see very many buying this over an E class.
I much prefer the prior gen to this. Not attractive or special in any way like the first gen CLS. Reminds me too much of the A Class which isn't a compliment. Shame
You are right, I somehow got that wrong despite having looked into it but it's a bit late to fix. However, the rumor mill tells us taht 2020 might get the I6.
Hey Alex! Love your reviews as you may or may not know. The Start/Stop in my 2017 Impala keeps the A/C blowing Cold when I am stopped and the system engages. The fan speed is lowered a little but it’s still blowing ice cold. If you leave the A/C on MAX setting and not Eco then the Start/Stop will not engage when you stop. ;) `
Oh yeah that's a sexy hybrid with great specs all right. Until it starts giving crazy unreliability issues after 40k on the odometer. German engineering is engineered to break.
raghu c cause here in europe the cls is in the upper class car segment, the same as the s class so it actually belongs to the s class and that’s why it’s called clS, not clE
To my mind, the aesthetics of this model (unlike models in the past) don't really make a case for this car over the E-class. Also I imagine I'm not the only person who thinks those air vents are overwrought. I wouldn't mind a bit of a return to staid German design, at least in the interior.
People need to move on, words and meaning change. Coupe originated from to horse-drawn berline coupe carriages. Earliest automobile coupes have their driver exposed to elements instead of being inside the car. Heck, one of the first 4 door coupes was introduced in the 60s.
Do you think any auto reviewer would have the balls to correct Mercedes that this is a cle priced like an s or the gt63s is just a cle63 or does Mercedes just not have a sense of humor being German
But the CLS's structure feels flimsy. Hit even the smallest road divot and a shudder rolls through the car that all the occupants hear and that the driver feels in the steering column." says car and driver
Why is the fuel economy so Bad as a Hybrid ? It barely crosses the 30 mpg mark combined. The Lexus ES and Lincoln MKZ gets around 40, so why would anyone buy this "Hybrid" Mercedes over the other 2.
A complete design faux pas from front to back! First they decided to make the C & E class look like S class, and then this. Need to fire their design department.
Thank You!! Like virtually every German vehicle, this thing is gonna be a maintenance nightmare after 40K miles! But hey, it looks bling so who cares xD
I just bought a 2019 CLS for my wife today. It is a great looking car, with the AMG lines.
Imo the term "coupe" should be reserved for 2-door sport sedans. Some brands are calling so many cars coupes, even vehicles you would think looked more like SUVs or crossovers. This car for example should be a sedan or sport sedan.
One of the best looking cars ever. The first gen one was what got me interested in Mercedes and made me want to get one.
explicit reviews as always. Mercedes sure knows how to craft an interior (I really love that steering wheel design).

that's the whole point of the mild hybrid system working with the AC system so it actually can keep the AC on max blast even when the engine is off.
It’s a simply stunning piece of German engineering
I do like the "Torque-Burst" aspect of MB's implementation of this mild hybrid system.
Great looking car & thrilled to see the I6 making its way back into Benz’s. Can’t wait until this engine package makes it to the wagons.

honestly, the last CLS look better. i just can't over how ugly those head light are.
A complete design faux pas that had so much potential. After they decided to make the C & E class look so similar to S class, and now this, I'm not sure WTF's going on with their design department.
So right
The body style of previous CLS looks better with distinct body lines. This is just a longer CLA. Nice though. Interior is clean
As always, very interesting review👍🏻 The most informative and interesting car channel on UA-cam ☝🏻
_Back in my day_ a CLS was the size of a S Class sedan
Not true. I drove the very first CLS and it was based on the E-class and not nearly the size of the S class
I’ll be in the minority but I like it. I definitely like it more than the second generation with those pontoon fenders. With better rims than the one he tested this is a good looking vehicle.
Definitely thank you. Thought I was the only 1 who didn't like the 2nd gen
I really can’t decide if I like the styling of the new CLS. The first two gens were immediately recognized as beautiful, but this one is taking its time to please my eye. The larger wheels and higher optioned cars do look better though, maybe it’s these ugly wheels that ruin it for me... and the taillights...
Always get Alex’ opinion before buying a car
I am starting to love Alex than Thomas....
Great review and beautiful car! It’s just a shame that cars like these are out of reach affordability wise for most people.
waiting on that comparison between the new a7 and this cls...the germans are bringing their a game this generation cycle
Looks sharp, but I'm old school. I gotta have that Star on the bonnet. For me, it's E.
I dont like how the speakers stick out like that
Impressive new Benz! Looks and performance, no complaints.
Inline 6 FTW
☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️
Hey Alex. What was the as tested price of the car in the video?
They can call it a coupe until they're face turns blue, but it is still just a fast back sedan.
Great thorough review as usual. I really like this car and it is my favorite in the class. I hope you are able to review the CLS 53 when you can...
Never thought of that but o don't think so because the sensor are integrated into it
This car weighs more than a 7 series and charger 392. Thise sre impressive numbers for the Power. Feels like the power is combined to produce that speed. Cls 5660 pounds, 7401 xdrive 5630lbs, 392 5400lbs and those cars are considerably bigger
Am I the only one who thinks the air vents on the Merc are bling over-kill?
Seems like it was designed for customers who don't know what class is.
One of the best reviewers around....but a coop is for chickens Alex. lol!!
Pardon, coo-pay is for Europeans ;)
It'd be interesting to see how this model does. The positioning of this product is weird and like Alex said, I cannot see very many buying this over an E class.
The US spec E450 has a V6 , not the inline 6 .
How will the Arteon compare to this when it comes out?? Being a VW, how much will you give up with it, vs this CLS, the Audi, & BMW equivalent? 🤔
The Arteon engine is about 2 seconds slower 0 to 60.
I much prefer the prior gen to this. Not attractive or special in any way like the first gen CLS. Reminds me too much of the A Class which isn't a compliment. Shame
Looking at rear seat and trunk space... Keeping my Auid A7.
Shouldn't actual Audi drivers spell the brand correctly
Alex, can you make test about BMW 6 series Gran Coupé?
Is the rear view mirror electric? I've tried to adjust by hand and it doesn't budge.
No
Houston!!! 👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾
Actually, you don't need to get the CLS53 for the AMG steering wheel.....
Will there be an E53 wagon? 🧐
Alex, I think the e450 is still the older v6 biturbo? At least that’s what it says on the Mercedes website...
You are right, I somehow got that wrong despite having looked into it but it's a bit late to fix. However, the rumor mill tells us taht 2020 might get the I6.
@@AAutoBuyersGuide that would make sense since I believe that'll be the mid cycle refresh. Hopefully it will get the new MBUX infotainment as well.
There is no such thing as a four door coupe.
Antenox apparently when there's no frame around the windows when you open the door they're called coupes
This rear end looks way better then e class...
But the E Class front lights >>>>>> CLS Class front lights
Hope we get a comparison of the cls53 and Amg Gt53 in the near future
I'm consider myself a forward thinking man when it comes to cars, but I prefer any other CLS to this one. Those headlights are hideous.
Yea, I saw them and was like why???
Errrr.. what is the cabin noise again? I didn’t get it
i6 engine is rare
im impressed but for this kind of money the new a7 is compelling
Pretty good
Hey Alex! Love your reviews as you may or may not know. The Start/Stop in my 2017 Impala keeps the A/C blowing Cold when I am stopped and the system engages. The fan speed is lowered a little but it’s still blowing ice cold. If you leave the A/C on MAX setting and not Eco then the Start/Stop will not engage when you stop. ;) `
The 2017 rental Malibu I had killed the A.C.. Most hated feature.
AMG GT 4-door looks sooo much better than this in my opinion
You're right, that design is much sexier (but good luck getting that one in the US)
it also has a 20k higher starting point lol
This can't be as good as an E-Class, right?
Basically the same but less interior space and some sportier technical enhancements.
you are wrong, the cls is actually bigger then a 5series - the length of cls:4988mm, 5series: 4936mm and width cls: 1890mm, 5series: 1868mm
Current accord looks similar from side ..especially that older CLS
Oh yeah that's a sexy hybrid with great specs all right. Until it starts giving crazy unreliability issues after 40k on the odometer. German engineering is engineered to break.
80k on mine and nothing, just traded for amg gt
I just don't understand why Benz calls this CLS instead of calling it CLE!!
raghu c cause here in europe the cls is in the upper class car segment, the same as the s class so it actually belongs to the s class and that’s why it’s called clS, not clE
The E450 is a V6
How does the E53 compare to the E63?
The E53 has a 6 cylinder engine compared to the 8 cylinder in the E63.
To my mind, the aesthetics of this model (unlike models in the past) don't really make a case for this car over the E-class. Also I imagine I'm not the only person who thinks those air vents are overwrought. I wouldn't mind a bit of a return to staid German design, at least in the interior.

Do you think any auto reviewer would have the balls to correct Mercedes that this is a cle priced like an s or the gt63s is just a cle63 or does Mercedes just not have a sense of humor being German
This should technically be a CLE based on measurements. They should make a larger one at this price while lowering this one by at least $20K tbh.
But the CLS's structure feels flimsy. Hit even the smallest road divot and a shudder rolls through the car that all the occupants hear and that the driver feels in the steering column." says car and driver
Looks very japan/south korea
Too high end here lately. What about reviewing new cars for the regular people who can't throw their money away?
Reviewers tend to get more attention/revenue by showing stuff that people cannot afford (aka clickbait)
"midsize sedan"...
Car with lenght about 5 meters is a midsize...
19:46 weird flex but ok
Lol ‘ol Reba McEntire
Why is the fuel economy so Bad as a Hybrid ? It barely crosses the 30 mpg mark combined. The Lexus ES and Lincoln MKZ gets around 40, so why would anyone buy this "Hybrid" Mercedes over the other 2.
E class is way sexier
fugly headlights
A complete design faux pas from front to back! First they decided to make the C & E class look like S class, and then this. Need to fire their design department.
The back's lights seems designed by a 5 years old child...
Almost as bad as the front lights 0.0
Pretty much irrelevant with the new amg gt 4 door coming.
only in Europe, not in the US
What are you talking about? The US is getting the amg gt 4 door
The front end on the last generation was stunningly menacing. This is bland
Intro music sucks
But for some bizarre reason Alex thinks it's the shizzle.
It honestly doesnt even look as good as the previous generation
The design of this and the new GLE is hideous. This line of design needs to go
That rear bumper loos so annoyingly disgusting. Its amazing how a couple of "regulations" obliterate a beautiful cars design.. :((
interior is ugly. With all of this technology, once the car is out of warranty, the depreciation will be stunningly poor.
To be fair, 95%+ of German automobiles depreciate like crazy. Hmm I wonder why?
Very bad car in Thailand , every hybrid segment. very bad service and customer service
Last
No. I'M LAST
Over priced, expensive maintenance and repair, and questionable reliability. No thanks.
Thank You!! Like virtually every German vehicle, this thing is gonna be a maintenance nightmare after 40K miles! But hey, it looks bling so who cares xD
More garbage e-hybrid from Mercedes.
Alex you need to loose some weight you look 👀 like Russian Vinnie Pooh 🍯 🐻
Alex has lost his focus. He now reviews vehicles that most people are not interested in. I will unsubscribe now.
Reviewers tend to get more attention/revenue by showing stuff that people cannot afford (aka clickbait)
I am glad he reviews nice cars too
