I am not specifically a fan of Wing Chun, but love to see coach Paulson making it work. It’s like his mind goes into overdrive and shows you all types of different solutions to a specific problem. Great to see and a truly skilled individual making it work, no matter if it’s called Wing Chun, JKD, Silat, Wrestling or BJJ.
Nice Sifu Paulson I really like these love to see more... Love the grappling and MMA stuff but also good to see the JKD and the Kali aspects of total fight conditioning. Really good material... I'm digging it
I wish there was someone local to me who had this kind of wing chun knowledge and can actually fight. I learned the first two forms and the dummy form from a local mcdojo but stopped because I realized that in the context of combat sports, self defense, etc just knowing forms is even less useful than body builder type muscles. At least a body builder could potentially bear hug someone unconscious, throw them or overpower them in some other way and a person who only studies the wing chun forms(no real world application/sparring/stress testing) is just going to be overconfident in their abilities when facing an actual fighter. I switched to Muay Thai/Muay Chaiya/Muay Thai Sangha(Kru Solana's combination of Muay Thai, Chaiya, judo and jiu-jitsu) about a year ago and I feel like I learned more real world practical skills that I could use almost immediately in the first month of Muay Thai than I did in about 6 months of Wing Chun at a mcdojo. Still the little application I learned has been useful in Muay Thai sparring and especially the trapping concepts because few of the people I train with even think about it and even fewer have drilled good defenses against it. Hopefully when I go early next year to Thailand to train with Kru Solana I can get him to teach me practical wing chun since he is also a black belt/sash under Sifu Francis Fong
I wouldn't say you need to lean "practical WC". Just train for combat and then go out and find what can improve your skills in fighting. Constantly test yourself also
Yea, what Jeff said. I'm old so I do Tai Chi now, but I go out to seminars on kick-boxing or grappling all the time to help keep it real. The important thing is to get out there and do something. I went to a McDojo for a while, and I don't regret it. It kept me in shape and some of the stuff was useful. Like Nike says, Just do it. The best style is the one that's close to your house so you show up every week.
LOVE that a seasoned fighter and instructor like Paulsen sees the value of learning and learning Wing Chun. Far too many bozos these days are close minded and miss how terrific WC can be!
I LOVE the C--clamp it is the ONLY way to catch a high speed fist after it has missed you or makes it super easy to catch a fist that has missed your center.
This is what I was hoping Paulson was going to do with his CSW trapping to grappling. Taking over what Sifu Hartsell was doing while he was alive. It’s his choice he went more the mma route. But not going to lie this brought some tears to my eyes cause Paulson was the one guy I hoped would incorporate the trapping to grappling to a new level. Really cool to see him doing so Jun fan and Wing Chun trapping. He’s still very good at HIA wish he do a whole series of dvds on trapping to grappling and bring JKD to the forefront again. God bless happy training
That don't work against internal. And definitely don't work against good boxing. Speally if someone twice your body weight. The Chinese made that external stuff up purly to make money. But hay what ever works
If someone twice your body, you don't want to trade jab with them or trapping hand or wrestling with them anyway. That why there is nut shot, shin kick, neck shot, eyes slash, etc.... all banned move that is applicable in kung fu on the street to deal with someone twice your weight.
It's funny that the algo gave me this video. I don't think much of WC at all. And I think trapping in particular is useless against a grappler. Because trapping range IS grappling range. Stop giving me this useless content, UA-cam!😮
@@akoh87 so, first of all, I appreciate the fact that you were respectful. You didn't insult me, you didn't insult my intelligence. You're just like, man maybe this guy doesn't know about Erik Paulsen Paulsen. But I do know about Erik Paulsen, so let's have a conversation. So yes, Paulsen is legit. No question. He could easily kill me. 😝. And I know he's considered a JKD guy because he trained with inosanto. But he's also a multiple judo and BJJ black belt. He's boxed and kickboxed. And he's an mma OG. So not really a JKD or WC guy, imo. I respect his opinion, but just because he can make trapping work (or call aspects of regular grappling "trapping") doesn't mean most people can or that it's a high percentage technique. The truth is that "trapping range" is at the same range when you can work clinching, the gateway to grappling. And I've never really seen it used effectively against a grappler.
@judosailor610 I'm a wing chun guy myself and I pretty much agree. You're probably not doing wing chun properly if you're not grappling/wrestling with it. The siu lim tao form is mostly just shooting for the clinch with a few strikes along the way.
Just my opinion but most streetfights I’ve seen on video don’t involve a lot of grappling usually it’s two people throwing punches or a large brawl where grappling would be to dangerous to use people are always quick to bring up grappling but if you wanted to look at what happens in real life you’d be better off just boxing
@@metalrobot3000 I mean, for sure if you're a good boxer, you will win 99% of street fights. But the same is true if you're a good grappler. But then you can also beat the boxer. 😉. That said, watching untrained people in street fights doesn't teach us much about the effectiveness of grappling. A lot of grappling is counterintuitive. So most untrained people resort to throwing haymakers. And if one lands, most untrained people are out of the fight. You do however see even untrained people in situations where they are in grappling range. First of all, it is not at all uncommon for untrained people to simply fall down in the chaos of a fight. Second of all l, hugging and holding is a pretty common thing people will try when they are getting hit. Honestly though, if someone trains in any martial art where there is a heavy emphasis on contact sparring/rolling/wrestling they will dominate most street fights.
What I think you're trying to say is that real fighting will destroy drills, and combinations training. Like boxing fighting will destroy the boxing speed bag drill; and boxing fighting will destroy this Wing Chun Pak Sau drill. I think you're really on to something with your *real fighting beats drills* theory
What is this nonsense?! You would think that guy who fought few times would actually know better, I guess there is a money to be made feeding delusions to WC and JKD goofs

A lot Of People forget that Erik is instructor in many Arts Like Jun fan Jeet Kune Do And Filipino Kali he even trained Karate 💪❤️💪
Thank you
I love Jkd trapping. It's like playing with toys. Have never seen more than one work in real life. But still very cool.
It’s more of a drip , some trapping does work , some are designed to improve skills.

Paulson is like a grand master chess player in martial arts.
A true martial artist 🎉

Ahh , back at Tackett's! Love it!
Amazing trapping tutorial!
always fun to watch old school jkd stuff
love the inside low kick, why not use it?, you break the structure, and can start a effective pak sau
Trapping is very subtle. You don’t notice, until it’s to late.
I LOVE how you slap the skin instead of over penetrating punch for the viewers sake. It lets them HEAR what their eyes cant see.
💪
💪💪💪
Any any chance you could show how these Concepts can be applied when unorthodox versus orthodox face off? (Both facing same side)
Ah Trapping I’m starting to appreciate this again nobody does it 🙏

Oss.
He is one of the JKD MMA fighters that proves JKD works in MMA.
Trapping doesn't work they say... 🤣
It doesn't

Look up Erik Paulson's MMA fights. His nickname is man of thousand locks. Trained Brock Lesnar for his UFC fights.

So unrealistic...a boxer would destroy this
As it pertains to this comment - I would suggest it depends highly on the practitioner.
Do you even know who Erik Paulson is?
And this guy would destroy you. He teaches many many styles, and is proficient in all.

Without saying MMA, what individual system of martial arts have you trained in, do you prefer at this particular range? - Respectfully.
