If you know about the classical gems they produced using Bhimsen Joshi, Pannalal Ghosh, Ustad Akbar Ali Khan, Hariprasad Chaurasiya, Shivkumar Sharma et al. you will understand that they were very exceptionally talented. The majority original high-quality songs they created may indicate that they must have copied some others because they loved the tunes. Some SJ songs were copied into English too. Jan Pehchan Ho an original Shanker composition was directly used in House of Ghosts in this century. Quite a few other SJ songs were later used in foreign films. 'Good Times' from Bombay Talkie was used in Darjeeling Express.
From RK's Barsat 1949 to Krishna-Krishna 1980 nearly 175 films they have complited * After Jaikishanjis death Shankerji continued SJ name First Shailendra & after Hasratji also left about 20 song writers tried by SHANKERJEE But Kavi Niraji ' songs were to famous and popular **

Thanks for the SJ videos. I am from Kerala , and my exposure to Hindi films was only thru the radio. I am sure they are of international standard. Their tunes made Indian films pouplar in Russia. I have heard that there was a large stock of their unused tunes with RK studios and that they used many of them after the SJ period was over.

It is true SJ are top class. But the quality of their music declined after early -mid sixties. The old melody in their music was gone; instead came noisy jumble. Intended to be breezy, it did not fool people. The main reason attributed for this fall was the de facto separation of S and J. Shailendra died in 1966, and J in 71. The old spirit could never be revived. SJ were also said to have adopted unethical tactics to corner Filmfare awards. They were also responsible for creating groupism in the film music world. When we assess someone's work, all aspects should be taken into account. At this distance in time, we know so much that we need not shy away from facts. But there is no denying that SJ were very good when they were at their prime. It is also a fact of life that the quality of all great MDs declined in course of time.(except perhaps SDB). Our respect and admiration for them does not diminish when we mention the darker side. Even the sun has its spots. We will always cherish the old gems of SJ!

But most of their work came in 1960's it was good, better, best or whatever you may call it. But believe me if Jaikishan had not left the world it would not have that easy for LP and RD to take the cake away in 1970's.
