Hallucinogens amplify what is in the user.
So if she committed suicide then she was facing her demons- not the hallucinogen demons but the demons of her past- to which as Timothy accurately points out- was her father and her problems with her father.
Truth is- she probably jumped because of her relationship or non relationship with her career driven father who never spent that much time with her- and when he did he was over bearing and closed minded blaming everyone around him for everything but himself.
Hallucinogens reveal who you are to yourself.
And you can hear what a hateful and murderous man Art Linklater was. He wishes death on others. So Timothy was correct when he said twice that he was "ghoulish." Art was in fact the problem. He just wouldn't admit it because of hubris, ego and hatred.
Ironically the CIA pushed acid. And Art worked in government. Again ironic.

Leary is truly ahead of his time. Art says his daughter was "bewildered." Wow, maybe she actually came to grips with her situation, had some truthful, insightful realizations for once in her life. If only she had some guidance, someone understanding who would be willing to help and change, like her own father. I think this is why Timothy calls Art a hypocrite, because Linkletter goes on about being there for your kids, yet was an asshole to his own children. He blames LSD for his daughters suicide when in reality the one who should be bearing more responsibility is the FATHER for not being there, which is what it sounds like. Maybe this poor woman realized something about her dad and felt so much desperation she couldn't cope, or was for some reason unable to get help. That is a tragedy indeed. And then the hypocrite father tries to tell others how to parent when his daughter killed herself at his hands. Sickening.

You hate Tim Leary Nixon would give you the keys to the mansion. That's how G Gordon Liddy got in too. Leary always said LSD isn't for everybody AND that you need training and a guide. He clearly told the US Senate that LSD could indeed be described as dangerous but then so can cars and airplanes yet we allow people to use them when they have been trained. Art wanted to believe Leary was advocating putting it in the water supply because he didn't want to face up to having anything to do with her death himself. It was convenient for Art to blame Tim because he needed a scape goat.

I was looking for audio of Timothy Leary. Was this ambush by a very scripted and prepared Art Linkletter, choreographed by some third rate TV show host, suppose to shame Timothy Leary or make him look bad? I've never listened to Leary or given any credence to "drug culture,'" but this inept approach is so typical of modern "media" tactics." The only person coming out of this exchange with my sympathies is Leary. That notting person interviewing him isn't worthy of my thoughts, but Linkletter, whom I always believed to be a hussle, lost any of my respect. His spiced up accusations against everyone else for his daughter's suicide makes me, like Leary, wonder at his own role. And yes, Leary was right, Linkletter was ghoulish to take this gig and use his daughter for public acclaim. Yep, even as a Christian man, I have to say that the aging, reprobate Leary came out head and shoulders above these other two clowns.

I found personally that after tripping I became prone to extreme alienation from the systematic world, and that remains even when I don't use the drugs.
But I don't hate the ideas and experiences that came to me during my trips, because they have given new meaning to attempting to overcome abusive systems, and a focus on cultivating my imagination as though it were another sense or power, which was withering under cultism and totalism previous.
It was Psilocybin and LSD that showed me hope after becoming depressed at the prospect that after living my whole life a believing Christian, there might be no afterlife or any meaning to be found anywhere except in make believe. They showed me that make believe is as real as this, dreams are as effecting on this world as this world is effecting our imaginations.
And there a plenty of closed-minded conservatives and media tools that point the finger at the drugs for the suicide ... All of my hundreds of mental suicide notes (some written before, some after first taking psychedelics) have been about the nature of free will, society, and the abuse of cults like the Mormon and Catholic Churches, the manipulation of kids by corporate powers through marketing, the sedation and control of personal imaginative experience by prohibition of self-medication or pharmaceutical monopolization via legislation.
None of them have ever said, "I freaked out on acid, so I want to die." Although I have considered my last lines to be recommendations to my loved ones to be careful but to responsibly consider the mystical beyond their current comfort zone, and consider taking psychedelics at least once.
But maybe everyone like me will just eventually burn out, and it just hasn't hit me yet.
I feel burnt out on life, we've got 40 hour fucking work weeks if we want to have shelter, food, and the fuels and electricity and water to live as expected by the powers that be.

I like how at 3:52 even the host who clearly despises Leary and was threatening to kick him off seconds earlier felt sorry for him a little bit after that absolutely brutal blow from Art. I like that Leary just acted like he was fascinated by his reaction rather then to get mad. And just so you guys don't think I'm insane, I am the biggest supporter of LSD on the planet... but even I can admit that psychedelic drugs and probably LSD defienently have the power to seriously change your personality over a lifetime of use. I mean its almost frightening seeing how much Leary's personality and demeanor have changed from his first recorded interviews to this. I still will NEVER admit that LSD can make people insane or lose their minds permanently but it sure as hell will bring out the anti-social and paranoid tendencies in your personality until you withdraw from society (mainly social interaction) and think everyone is out to get you/setting you up. I mean Leary thinks within the first 20 seconds of the interview that its a sting or something and he is under arrest, can't sit still, fails to display normal emotions for the subject matter talked about, has no sense of what is too offensive to say, and just looks like he is about to have a mental breakdown at any second. As a previous heavy LSD user, seeing him in this condition has greatly inspired me to cut down drastically on my intake from multiple trips a week (yeah I know I used to be stupid as shit) to maybe 2 or 3 a year if that. I still fucking love psychedelics and will never give them up but they are something that HAS to be done in moderation. Taking them all the time makes them lose their magic and wonder and starts to change your personality until you are literally afraid to leave your room and interact with other people. I mean I only took it for 5 years or so and I have extreme HPPD (whenever I close my eyes or focus on a single spot on a wall for example I have extreme vision distortion and wavering, as well as moments where it literally feels like I just dropped a hit for 2 or 3 minutes which experienced users commonly refer to as a "Flashback") and I am a much more paranoid person that I ever used to be. Just an example, even though I am never doing anything illegal anymore and share a driveway with my neighbors so traffic is common, I still freak out and run to the window every time I hear a car coming up my driveway in fear that it is the police/FBI/people I wronged in the past who are coming to get me. Sorry to rant... I got really carried away there. Moral or the story: Psychedelics are terrifyingly powerful substances that are great in moderation but if used constantly will alter your personality for the worst.

+tankmaster1018 Man that sounds pretty terrible man. I've always tried to be careful with psychedelics, cause I have found when I used them excessively, for me that was every 2 weeks or so, it really effected my life negatively. Now I space them out to every few months, and it is fine. I've view Timothy Leary though as psychedelics worst enemy in a way. Without him LSD wouldn't have had the recreational use it did in the 60's which cause it and psychedelics in general to be demonized by the government and public. But damn dude I can't imagine tripping 2-3 times a week, not judging. Why do you think you were doing that? Has tripping less helped elevate your symptoms? Are you still able to life a functioning life? Wish you the best.

LSD can be dangerous. I've seen it have extreme dangerous effects on people. I've tripped over 300 times and never had a bad trip. However, Ive been around people that freaked out so hard, they had to be taken to the mental ward. They came out of it and were normal, but the way they were jumping around and screaming incoherently , I could see how it could be very dangerous. However, it can also be a very wonderful learning tool. It's basically like religion. You have religion that can make you a wonderful person and you have religion that can make you a dangerous, radical fruitcake.

Things have moved forward somewhat since this clip (legal recreational use of marijuana in both the states of Washington and Colorado) but the Christian right wing attitudes still unfortunately pollute the political arena. Back in the sixties and seventies many people I know took LSD and not a single one ever experienced a flashback of any kind. I wish Leary had commented more on Art Linkletter using his LSD theory as a likely cover up for his own possible guilt of being an absentee father whose poor parenting might have been much more of a contributing factor to her mental state than any association with mind altering drugs. In 1969 singer/songwriter Bobby Darin wrote the song "Baby May" about Linkletter's suicide. Darin said he felt that Art Linkletter could have assumed more responsibility in his daughter's death. Furthermore the last person present at Diane Linkletter's questionable suicide was the same man (Ed Durston) who was with actress Carol Wayne the night she suspiciously died. Seems to be a lot more going on concerning her death than a flare up of her prior LSD use).

I can relate to Ac1DGod's remarks. I was once experiencing non drug related out of body experiences. My body was frozen, I couldn't speak but I was able to travel around my surroundings "out of body". All thoughts remembered during this period were still present when I returned to my normal state of being. What I have in common with Ac1DGod is that after my first experience I was able to train my body (more so my mind) to recreate the moment. And it all dealt with a low ohm vibration in my ears just as I was entering one of the first dream levels. I remember saying to myself, "Woah, here I go again" and within moments I was once again out of my body. I went to see a doctor since I did think it strange but his answer was, "Chance, there are gurus in India who spend their lifetimes trying to achieve this state. Just relax and enjoy it." So I wouldn't dog AC1DGod. He's only relating his personal experiences as I just have. And that's exactly what they are....personal.

Leary lectured to my engineering college. He was brilliant. He said that we future engineers, inventors, and scientists should do more that turn out assembly line products. We should think about how to make the world live together, not better ways to blow it apart.
I doubt any of us really changed after his talk, but I know some of us discussed what he said. We all wanted to do what he said: make cool stuff to enjoy life. I wanted to work on space exploration... and I did. I think he would have liked my goal. Even today, I think humanity will benefit from space exploration.
I never tried LSD, even though it was easily available. I wonder if I would see things differently now.

    • @suxcesss

That's a myth about LSD. Ask yourself, how many suicides happen each year? How many of them never even had a drug experience? Even if there were a couple who jumped out of windows induced by drugs, how many did crash and die and kill others will drunk on alcohol? And if you have ever been to a hippie or psychedelic festival or concert or club, you will notice that those are the most peaceful and loving places on earth.
So yes, drugs are illegal because you get disillusioned from the way the government/economy wants you to think and that can give you stress or create problems, because you and me we are slaves to a higher system. We aren't free.

Quote by Hunter S. Thompson...We are all wired into a survival trip now. No more of the speed that fueled that 60's. That was the fatal flaw in Tim Leary's trip. He crashed around America selling "consciousness expansion" without ever giving a thought to the grim meat-hook realities that were lying in wait for all the people who took him seriously... All those pathetically eager acid freaks who thought they could buy Peace and Understanding for three bucks a hit. But their loss and failure is ours too. What Leary took down with him was the central illusion of a whole life-style that he helped create... a generation of permanent cripples, failed seekers, who never understood the essential old-mystic fallacy of the Acid Culture: the desperate assumption that somebody... or at least some force - is tending the light at the end of the tunnel.

Acid cannot be the only excuse why you didn't get a grip on life itself... so the absence of it cannot explain why such ignorance like yours should be tolerated. He offers that Manson was a byproduct of the US Military and prison systems. Leary was a good psychologist. He is credited for developing the Stanford Binet intelligence test and no doubt had a better idea of the intelligence quotient of his opponents than they do.

This is so weird I don't even know what to think. A set up? A staging based on an agreement from all parts? It's hard to believe Timothy was caught by surprise. He didn't have to sit there while being called an idiot. I think there's something more to it. I have taken LSD many times, I'm not totally against Tim, but nowadays I have certain reservations. On the other side, if this is not staged, what these guys did to Leary here is pretty disgusting. Also Timothy was pretty out of it. He didn't show his sharp side here. He looked just like a slow, brain damaged, dysfunctional pothead. I was on that frame of mind once, when I was a pothead. I could think but I could not externalize in the right timing. That's what I see here with Tim. He's trying hard to keep his cool but the host owns him.

In my youth I would occasionally use LSD... ...in my "best," and last "trip," I experienced, what I now call, the temptation to fly, wherein I found myself staring out of a top floor window at pigeons that had flown off but that seemed to be waiting for me to join them--I felt like I was in the most lucid dream I've ever had, and suddenly felt as if I remembered how to fly, this made me happy, and I got excited, because I knew that I could fly just like in previous dreams, and so as I pressed my face into the window screen to exit and join the pigeons, my younger brother, whom I had unknowingly wakened, excitedly asked me what I was doing; his question snapped me back into my altered reality, and in that moment, while still tripping, I realized that I had almost become another statistic... This realization, coupled with other experiences, have caused me to have respect for such substances. Furthermore, I do not believe they should be illegal, but I am convinced, that without regulation, and education, these powerful substances, in the hands of the ignorant, can lead to death. (I suppose that's true for any form of power.) Just my two cents.

I had a terrible bad trip on LSD. Had anxiety attacks/flashbacks for about eight months. I frequently thought about suicide. Today I'm happier than I've ever been (and believe me, I was happy before that bad trip). Turns out I had childhood traumas intimately related to the failure of mainstream psychiatry to take care of my family (in spite of our contact with this community for 10 years), and if LSD had been made legal and licensed, as Leary proposed and fought for, I could've been...

Leary was well aware of particle physics at this point in his life and knew full well the influence of spin on personality. Everything is spinning relative to everything else, if you are spinning counterclockwise like Linkletter you are moving against the flow of the future.
