Rules and Explanations
Rules: (1) Only use the one Pokémon in Battle, others for HMs are fine. (2) No Items in battle (3) No Glitches* (4) Set Mode (5) No saving in the Elite Four (6) No evasion moves
Badge Boost "Glitch" Explanation: When you collect odd numbered badges the game boosts a stat by 12.5%. Brock gives ATK, Surge DEF, Koga SPE, and Blaine SPC (in game text is wrong). When any of your stats are modified (even by you using a move like Withdraw, or your opponent using Leer) the badge boosts are re-applied. So If you use Swords Dance, you also gain *an additional 12.5% in Speed/Defence/Special (on top of the 12.5% you were supposed to be getting). When you level up, the game corrects this error, and only the non-glitch 12.5% remains. Because of how difficult it is to avoid, I've allowed for it to be exploited, since opponents will spam Leer/Growl anyways, and this way battles are less random. Red/Blue are extremely buggy, so there's always going to be some glitches present, and because of how unavoidable this one is, it is allowed in runs, and considered more like a special Generation 1 mechanic as opposed to a glitch.
I'm just waiting for the inevitable moment in one of these runs where Koga goes to use Explosion and gets the 1/256 glitch.
I mean it's a 1/256 glitch but only 151 runs minus the runs already done. Chances are kinda low :D
@@mto7429 He has to fight Koga multiple times in a few runs. And, while outside of the purview of the original comment, there are other trainers which use explosion/self destruction.
@@brutusthebear9050 ye now that you said it, I feel pretty dumb. My brain is awesome
@@mto7429 No reason to feel dumb, being able to learn and reflect is a hallmark of intelligence.
@@mto7429 sometimes the brain thinkn't. At least you can own it lol
I’m a woodworker and the most tedious and time consuming process is sanding, nothing better than tedious and time consuming speed runs to pass that time. Better than any podcast I’ve tried. Keep it up and I might just sand everything in sight this month!
You will have sanded away everything. It'll be all be smooth and you will be knee high in dust.
All hail the sand master!
May he always show us the way with his dust of the saw!
I read that as "woodpecker" and had to do a double take
@@tabeebyeamin9986 😂😂😂😂
I love the line "This is what happens when a run takes about a third of the time, we get overconfident. Let's just win now." Its such a perfect take on how confident he is with Venusaur even after trying to get a bit more strategic.
The Bulbasaur line is one of the best starter lines in all of Pokemon! I can't wait to see how he does.
Its a very solid and well rounded starter, but Blastoise is better. Charizard is probably the weakest but he is my favorite.
Edit: Hot topic for people to discuss, and lots of valid points people are making, but I am basing my opinion on which starter is fastest to beat the game with, which factually is Blastoise.
I have a tattoo of bulbasaur on my arm that’s how dedicated I am to this line
@@TheSpencer1000 Nah blastoise is a meh water type in Kanto, meanwhile Venusaur is the best grass type easily.
@@TheSpencer1000 disagree because Misty can be a pain even with a Wartortle/Blastoise and so can Lt. Surge. Venusaur doesn't really encounter problems until Erika or Koga but has plenty of moves by then. There's better Water types in Kanto like Omastar, who I think would be great at this kind of challenge.
@@MazterP28 I LOVE that! I may get something like that one day.
I love gen 1 Venusaur. Bulbasaur was my first ever starter pick and with gen 1 crit rate razor leafs and toxic/leach seed mechanics he felt so powerful.
How do you remember your first ever starter pick? I was like 4 when I played Red. No idea what I picked
@@88888888888888888443
I suppose I was a couple years older. And it was just overall a very memorable experience for me playing that game for the first time.
The speedruns allow RNG manipulation and use NidoKing. Used to be Squirtle as they both learn guess what, a 1hitKO move. Good old Gen 1.
Bulbasaur is the goat 🍃+🦕=🐐
@@PopcornMax179 what is squirtle 1hko move?
Alright! I've been wondering when we'd get to these guys ever since this turned into a 151 part series rather than a 53 part one. Bulbasaur is my preferred starter in these games, and I'm hoping Venusaur will prove to be the best of the three, like I think it is. I guess we'll just need to wait and see.
Venusaur! I remember my very first attempt of playing pokemon ever. I was eight years old and I had gotten pokemon red. Bulbasaur was my very first stater.
I had no clue what I was doing, and I restarted around Vermillion City with just a Venusaur and a Nidoking. Good times.
The first time I played pokemon it took me literally two days to work out where the stairs were in the starting house in Pokemon red.
@@stevedomique9278💀
After that Shedinja video you 100% deserve this run
The older I get the more frustrated I am that I STILL cant decipher the Venusaur back sprite
the bump on the right is its ear
😂
Ya it’s pretty awful
It's a garden salad
Great video, happy to see the starters this month
(also side note: 333 isn’t a multiple of 11 😉)
Glad there's another math nerd here to make this important correction haha. But Excellent video otherwise. Really enjoying all this extra JRose content!
Had to see if someone in the comments pointed that out
That immediately sounded off to me lol
Came to say this. Don't have to be that asshole.
This run really showcases your domination over the mechanisms of this game. I love how venesaurs constant levelling really trolled the late game.
Yes! Been waiting for the starter evolution runs. Curious to see if they align with Squirtle/Venasaur/Charmander runs from the very beginning.
Bulbasaur*
Hoping squirtle the best choice this time around.
They wont, squirtle got shorted due to ignoring badge boost glitch at a time, its so much stronger using Withdraw
@@michabaron4129 see, I knew squirtle got fucked
@@michabaron4129
Withdraw wastes time. Squirtle is already the fastest when it comes to completing the game.
I’m really living for all this content Jrose I’m happy to hear your voice again! I’ll miss these solo runs when they’re over
whenever jrose lowers his voice to a whisper, you know he's 5 seconds away from laughing maniacally.
I'm literally living for these Jrose videos at this point in life. Snow and freezing rain outside. Nope. Stay inside and watch Jrose videos. Mmmmm :)
I remember playing red and blue as a really young kid, like 25 years ago, and I beat the game with just bulbasaur/venusaur alone many times with ease. I'm not surprised to see venusaur absolutely wrecking it.
I personally always favored the Squirtle line, but I can see the appeal for the bulbasaur line. It is kinda funny seeing this run in Red and how many more small struggles Venusaur hits in Yellow from the modified teams and move sets that held it back enough for Blastoise to win that particular gen 1 race. Eagerly waiting to see how the other starters do in Red!
I can’t believe we’re only a little over a third of the way through gen 1 pokemon! Speaks to how engaging your videos are that I feel like we should be 3/4 through the series, and makes me excited for the longevity of this series
Ah, gotta remember the good times when I used to love Venusaur was my fave Kanto starter. Love how this video went and gotta love how if not for bad luck with Lorelei, this WOULD have been a first-try sweep. Still fairly good time overall, so that's a lot of fun!
I did a solo run with Venusaur years ago, and I remember running into a wild glitch against Agatha. One of her Gengars, if I remember. I think it was a Leech Seed glitch, but it basically made it so I couldn't attack her, and she just attacked me over and over. It was so strange, but I found out it was documented a few years later.
Mind telling the name of the glitch?! I would love to read about it.
@@deoxysandmew2162 It is very similar to the Haze glitch (Chickasaurus_GL did a video on it, in fact I commented on that video nine years ago explaining what happened to me). Only thing is, my Venusaur couldn't have been frozen. It was against Agatha, and I assume I must have used Hyper Beam and got Haze on the recharge turn, which caused the same effect that happened to the Chansey in that video. I couldn't do anything. My menu never popped up for me to select an attack, check the bag, or check my Pokémon menu. Just had Gengar attack me over and over until I fainted.
@@deoxysandmew2162 Actually I found a video by Crystal_ demonstrating it that I also commented on years ago. RBY Sleep + Haze glitch.
@@skibalovesya I found her video and interesting...
In that example, the chansey was literally frozen in time and was completely softlocked due to Haze not updating the game correctly.
Such a poor programmed move Haze was.
My favourite evolved starter. Can't wait to see how he handles the solo run
Man this takes me back to when you did the Bulbasaur run and I am loving it
The soundtrack is amazing I almost never see it get compliments. Great runs as always keep up the good work.
Venasaur is the reason i survived pokemon red. People tend to underestimate him because he's a tank, but with giga drain razor leaf earthquake and synthesis he's unstoppable.
Venusaur obliterates 90% of the game with proper movesets. Brock, misty, LT Surge, Giovanni, Erika, even Koga. Then Lorelei and Bruno are jokes as well. The rest you should have another team members. Tauros or Persian are good for Sabrina - or a Meditate Hypno in Gen 3 with Shadow Ball. Lance is a joke in Gen1 but threatening in Gen3(Firered/Leaf green) Kadavra or Alakazam are also a must.
I’m more of a Leech Seed / Toxic guy
@@chvIry that's a glitch 😂 Leech Seed stacks with toxic
@@AlldaylongRock I never liked how Alakazam always has such a terrible move pool in the Kanto games, save Let’s Go. If I’m using Venusaur, I prefer to use Starmie as my psychic type since it’s still quite strong, has a significantly better move pool (Psychic, Surf, Ice Beam and Thunderbolt hits almost everything from Erika onwards for super effective damage and it any resisted by other psychic types) and can even function as my surfer.
@@yorecf9641 Tbh it does not need anything else but Psychic and Psybeam 😂. The thing about Alakazam is that it's available really early game. You don't have 2 badges and you can already access Abra (Nugget Bridge), grind to lvl 16 and trade/use a modded game to get Alakazam. Starmie is also a great one, but tbh you can also use Gyarados as your water type, also very early game (right outside Pewter). In FRLG Hypno is also pretty good as a Psychic type.
By Cerulean you can have 5 excellent Pokémon. Fearow, your starter(I personally always pick Bulbasaur), Gyarados, Nidoking and Alakazam.
I personally love Leech Seed so I always see ways to use it that aren't actually slower while watching this run, e.g. against the Muk...
Thank you for the great videos Jrose!
The Indigo Plateau ledge.
I remember that exact pain JRose.
I was there Gandalf. I was there 3000 years ago.
You are absolutely spoiling us this month dude. And we love you for it.
Finally Venusaur!! letsgoooo! These daily videos and the month of Jrose is the best! Getting off work and being able to watch a new challenge everyday makes me so happy
I always love pausing the vid when you show the move pool and trying to guess what the final moveset will be every vid
One thing that's been bothering me lately is that you seem to use the rare candies as soon as you reach the elite four in your most recent runs. Since level is a pretty big determining factor in the ranking it might be worth at least trying a time to two without them first
Yeah I notice that too. Not sure why he does that. it seems pretty obvious to save a few for badge boosts just in case.
I think it makes the most sense to use the candies. Just because he didn't before doesn't mean it was optimal. I see the argument for consistency with the past though.
i can listen to you explain the badge boost glitch, "good AI", and how crits ignore stat boosts every single video. never stop, bro
could be autism
Woah, a new JRose11 upload!? I had to wait a whole day, but my patience has paid off~
Joking aside, these daily uploads for the month are spoiling us. Thank you so much for doing this! I love your content and I’m looking forward to seeing everything you put out.
Go Jrose! You are the best. I am rooting for you. I NEED these videos! I can't live without them.
Consider - what if I'm reborn in a timeline where you can pick any Pokémon as your starter? In 1999 I was 5 years old. 5 year old me wasn't able to use the scientific method. He didn't have the reward delay for it. But let's assume I could send him a message, or for some reason I was allowed to carry 1 piece of knowledge into this timeline. If I picked the best starter? If I told everyone in my class the best starter? They'd love me, they'd revere me. Who knows what that type of praise for something largely out of his control would do to a boy developmentally.
I would have replaced Body Slam with Mimic for the Elite 4, which is what I did in my almost minimum battles run with Bulbasaur (with the only optional battle being to get Body Slam). That way you can mimic Dream Eater and beat Agatha faster while also not having to Growth all the way, while you can just Mimic Hyper Beam against Lance to get through his dragons faster, and then against Blue you can Mimic Hydro Pump or Psychic so you can one-shot Zard, reducing the likelihood of getting screwed by crits, getting burned, or getting eternally locked in Fire Spin. Doing that would have probably shaved 5-10 minutes off for Venusaur's time and make it upper A tier.
This month of jrose is making me so happy. Amazing keep it coming bro 💯 💪 🙌
Daily Jrose is absolutely insane. I've probably given your channel more watch hours than every other creator I watch combined. Very thankful for all the new content.
It only makes sense Venusaur is so good. It was the key to Imported Cheese's mashing A in battle Pokémon green challenge run
A
My favourite Pokémon. Was very glad to see Bulbasaur own the other starters and I’m excited to see Venusaur do the same.
Also I just watched the first episode of a supernatural thriller series called The Devil’s Hour where the main character wakes up from a nightmare every night at 3:33. After seeing Venusaur’s time, I am very spooked
Loving the month of Jrose! Just look after yourself dude, try not to burn out man. We can wait for the awesome videos if it means you are looking after yourself :)
Hey Jrose, I love your content and your upload frequency lately! I want to let you know that after a long and shitty day, your videos always make me happy and help me relax. Thank you for that.
I literally had the idea in the back of my head "What if Jrose did Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise for a more accurate starter comparison?" And then he did it. Glad to see so many videos from you, it's really satisfying my Pokemon itch.
For the run after Charizard and Blastoise let's ask a tough question: Which Gen 1 Fire-type is worth using your Fire Stone on? You've done Eevee and Flareon, now how about Growlithe/Arcanine and Vulpix/Ninetales? As a massive Arcanine fan, I would like to know which is best
Probably ninetales
Arcanine is superior. Ninetails is a lot easier to use though. Vulpix for good moves only needed to be mid 30s while Growlithe needs to be late 40s to early 50s
Arcanine overall Ninetails for ease of use. Flareon was very hurt by not being able to learn anything via level up after evo.
Super hyped to see the best of the fully evolved starters. Keep up the great work Jrose! Hopefully you get to 300k subs by 2023.
You got quite a few max sleeps in this run. Pretty insane luck, plus the bad luck vs. Exeggutor.
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again since you’re revisiting the starters now. There’s not many Pokémon that can learn both swords dance and hyper beam, but charizard is one of them. It’s very overpowered in gen 1 when you don’t have to recharge if hyper beam one shots. It’s probably not necessary but should be a lot of fun to do when you get to the charizard run.
Hyper Beam would actually kill Charizard’s time. If the TM was on the floor it would be a cinch, but due to it being a game corner exclusive move that costs an arm and a leg (and with no way to speed up buying coins) Jrose never gets it. He spends his money on Vitamin in the department store for more consistency. Body Slam is more than enough to sweep with Charizard and Swords Dance though.
@@DemonVermin yea sd, body slam, eq, flamethrower goated coverage
@@musicstuff6310 Yup. Imo that is whats going to push Charizard and Blastoise up. They are all going to have a buff move and access to Earthquake. Like, if Venusaur got Earthquake, Agatha would be no issue at all and some tougher fights like Koga would be clean. Charizard is fast, and his moveset is solid. I worry for Blastoise though as it will have a few harder matchups.
this month of jrose is pretty sweet 😁
Thank you so much for your awesome Gen 1 videos
It would be interesting to see you re-run one of the first Pokemon you did. See how much faster you go from the optimizations you've learned during the challenge.
That last crit when Venusaur got burned was CLUTCH!
Month of Jrose is something I never knew I wanted but is exactly what I needed 🙂
Hey I have an idea. Do an entire video about the various glitches and questions you get during these runs and go into detail on each. It could be fun and it's a nice reference for new people.
i still cant belive that i got so addicted to your channel keep up your work
We need a Starmie and an Exeggutor run . These are becoming pretty exciting .
golduck would be better
Tentacruel is a beast in gen one red and blue
@@MrLukedanger I belive so , a lot of pokemon that are mediocre and underwhelming in later gens were broken in gen 1.
I'd really like to see you do a Tentacruel run. It's one of my favorite pokemon of all time, and it's a pretty dang great one, too!
The crazy thing about this is that I thought to myself recently that sooner or later you'll have to do stage 2 and 3 pokemon.
Really awesome to see finally Venasaur!
Ty jrose for this month, I really like watching your videos before I go to bed.
Loving the month of JROSE so far keep em coming my dude ❤
these videos from jrose are like christmas but better because i am left the feck alone to watch these.
I'm loving these solo runs! I'd also love to see what it would be like if you started with unevolved mons and let them evolve at the proper level.
Unfortunately those runs are rather redundant when you're doing the pre and post evolved runs. Maybe an idea for the end of the series
I could see that "Friday" reference coming from a mile away. Extremely lame, expected and greatly appreciated
After watching so many of these Red/Blue runs and seeing all the mechanics of the game and how you've used them, I have a question: What non-Gen 1 starter, first form and/or final form, do you think would do the best in this game? Of course, the way since they all have a split Special and some are new types it wouldn't be one to one, but I'm still curious in what you think.
Have you thought about instead of using all rare candies at the beginning of the elite 4 to use all but one and use the last one right before the champion fight? This might prevent you from levelling up in the middle of the battle.
He's used that strategy before, but only after forgetting it and then losing to Champion
It's amazing how quickly Venusaur worked, for a relatively slow, bulky Pokemon.
Hilariously for gen 1, he isn’t even slow. 80 speed ties with Kabutopd and Dragonite, is faster than Flareon, Poliwrath, Nidoqueen, Victreebell and Vaporeon. It actually ranks in the upper 1/3 of speed for all pokemon in the gen 1 games. It’s why he is such a potent sun sweeper when he finally got Chlorophyll since 80 base speed doubled is something even choice scarfers struggle to outpace!
Green was my favorite color as a kid, so naturally I was Bulbasaur all the way. Good to see Venusaur did not disappoint either
I wouldn’t call the programming in Gen 1 bad, it is just centered more on single player gameplay and the choices they made have a lot more to do with the limitations of the game boy. There is a lot of talent in squeezing blood from a stone the way the did
I mean, I don't think things like "making focus energy do the opposite of what it's meant to do" or "making psychic immune to ghost when it's not supposed to be" or "reapplying badge boosts every time a stat is changed" can be chalked up to single player experience or programming limitations of the console.
@@devent10n sure it can
The GameBoy is not that limited. If it was able to support games like Super Mario Land 3 and Metroid II, then it shouldn't have any problem with something like Pokémon.
I love gen 1 as much as the next guy and I find an enjoyment with exploits that makes the series unique but none of that affects the fact the programming is bad. It was the most expensive game Nintendo had to debug at the time.
It is also completely understandable why it turned out so bad. It was an inexperienced team who were kind of out of their depths.
@@lordnoodle2146 I guess bad is relative. To me, bad code means lazy code. If you work really hard to find a way to do something you didn’t know how to do, and you get it done by deadline, that is good code. It might not be efficient code, but it is good code
Pokémon is actually a pretty complex JRPG when you think about it. It hides under a kiddie media brand. But Pokémon has like 24 standalone classes and many of these can be mixed and matched. With an entire system of secret leveling system based on how you raise your team.
Like, yeah glitches. But imo, bad isn’t the right word for what they pulled off.
Even to this day kanto has 3 absolute bangers for options. Perhaps the best 3 starters all together.
I would like to thank you for all the hard work you put in those wideos. Just great and super fun to watch.
I have 2 ideas for you, 1: compilation of failed impossible challenges (just where and why on Agatha you had to abandon those), and 2: run comparison between kanto games: R/B, Y, FR/LG, and LGPE with mewtwo.
Due mostly to the luck you got in this run this is my favorite vid of yours.
Something I just thought about with this run since you mentioned pre-evolved starters several times, I kinda wish the exp bonus granted to unevolved Pokemon was a thing starting with gen 1 instead of being introduced so much later. Mainly because I wonder how much of an impact that mechanic would have by basically granting extra levels to 'mons that aren't fully evolved. Might lead to some pre-evos getting better times than their final stages lol
Damn I feel like you keep getting better at these videos! Thanks for all the content jrose!
I'm so happy you're uploading so much. This is like early Christmas!
I still can't belive I'm going to get so many Jrose videos. This is truly a blessed month.
First off I have to say I'm really enjoying the month of Jrose, and especially this video because like many, I grew up on gen 1 and started my adventure when I was 6 with my trusty first Bulbasaur 😂. After second guessing for weeks, I'm 33 years old and just bought Violet yesterday, but this run on in the background really took me back to the 90's to my first pokemon adventure ever.
The bulbasaur line will always be my favorite. It was my first starter, and my first and second lvl 100 Pokémon back in the og red and blue.
You are really talented at doing the scripts and voiceover work. Love the content and excited for the next month!
Let me just say I absolutely LOVE the Month of Jrose! Hope the quality will stay the same, but so far you are providing excellent content. Thank you, sir!
Venusaur utterly clowned the entire game. What an awesome run.
“Which gym shall I take?” Instant like. Took the words right out of my mouth hahahaha
I can't remember if there's been a time where a critical hit has actually come in clutch specifically because it lets you dodge your stats being lowered? Certainly not, I don't think, specifically to avoid the attack lowering effect of burn. But each run brings something new, usually!
bro i'm loving these rapid posts love ya man
Wasn't expecting to hear a Friday reference today, good run
Is it December because this is feeling like Christmas I get so excited when you put up videos they are so entertaining and relaxing.
Absolutely loving all these runs man, great work
I remember when X & Y came out. It had been like 5 or 6 years I hadn't played Pokémon.
They give you one of the 3 original starters. Without a second thought I grabbed bulbasaur & made it my main. He might be my favorite pokemon ever.
32:00 The crit taketh away...
32:55 ...and the crit giveth.
I'm really loving the month of jrose. Keep up the great work!

i Freaking love these daily uploads. i dont know how much sweat and tears this cost for you. but damn. am i enjoying it. thank you man.
When you finish the entire pokedex, you should go back and redo Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle, just to demonstrate how your strategies and capabilities have evolved over the course of this series
Surprise victories against Koga are always fun.
That venusaur backsprite always throws me off
Very excited to get back into Stage 3 runs. Loved how many Stage 1'ers we got for a while there as well, but hyped to be back with the big boys, gals, and NB pals.
You need to watch Encanto, Jrose. You’re seriously missing out. Great run by the way! It’s like you came full circle back to the starters after learning so much from all your playthroughs. Hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving :)
I'm a curmudgeonly anti-Disney person and even I have to admit Encanto was pretty damn good.
Came here to say this
didn't really like encanto that much songs were good but i didn't really enjoy the movie itself all too much
I loaded UA-cam and this is one of the first things on my front page. "1 minute ago" on top of it. I think UA-cam knows I watch you too much Jrose.
The final time isn't actually a multiple of eleven - have to remember to carry your digits! Had you saved 3 minutes or taken 8 minutes longer it would have been, even though it wouldn't have quite looked like it! I tried converting to full minutes instead of hours and minutes as well, but even then you're off by 4 or 7 instead.
I would love to see how the gen 1 starters can do gen 2. That would be very interesting.
"The ledge is infinitely a harder boss than Bruno" yup. Also thanks for the laugh there!
So far Im loving this month of Jrose
Another upload, we have been eating good this month (and that's without Thanksgiving too)
I was always a Squirtle/Blastoise Stan but Venusaur is a very close second
This video every day is amazing love your stuff dude.
I find it funny how on Rival 6 you have body slam, swords dance, growth and a grass move, but you only start setting up growth for defense after teaching mega drain. And then continue to not use the grass move anyway since you only need the special defense.
I cant wait to see the blastoise run
