You should have grapes up high on a trellis, any thing that is low to the bottom are history . Also never cover them because they need plenty of airflow. Thank you for sharing your story!

Richard Barksdale I agree they need up higher. Mine are up to about 6 feet high and then hang down. Once they get brown during late fall train the grape vines up higher and next year they will start from there.

Okra is Oklahomans garden crop that always has a reliable plentiful harvest! I pickle, fry and roast in the oven with olive oil and garlic. Most of my garden this year has failed, do to disease from all our rains or insects. One thing that still remains going strong is my Okra. I am hoping Fall will be more successful for me. My cucumbers also did really well dealing with spider mites, squash bugs and powdery mildew.
Last year my okra grew to 12 ft tall!

you need to check okra daily. They grow rapidly. You do want to get them on the smaller side. My family in the south slices them up, tosses in corn meal and fries them. Not healthy but ohhhh so good. You can eat them raw also.

15:05. That is the size in Malaysia that we harvest but mostly green okra. I just bought seeds of red okra last month, haven't sown them yet. Normally in Malaysia we use okra in many ways such as stir fry by itself or with shrimps, stir fry with or without soy sauce, dumped into curry, steamed and eaten as salad dipped into chili-shrimp paste condiment, dumped into soups etc. I am from Malaysia..

Snap the tip of the okra. If it breaks off easily, it is good to eat. If not, you can keep them for seeds. You need to check the okra plant daily for more fruit. They get hard very soon. Check roots and refuge for an okra recipe.

For okra fertilizer, I soak peanut cake for 3 days in water and pour it near the roots. It produces vigorous growth and much bigger okras . It grows much taller by providing additional npk boost from peanut meal.

Okra is delicious if prepared properly and without the guey thing. I make jasmine rice in microvave for 12 minutes, then I remove, stir the rice, put back in the microvave to finish the cooking for 5 minutes and put a lid, but 3 minutes of these 5 minutes you use for the okra, put the whole okras on top of the rice, cover and let the remainder 3 minutes So the okra will be like it was steamed, crispy. You can do that with zucchini too, cut them in very thick slice, like 3 pieces of the spanish/Mexican medium, light gree small zucchini, my favorite zucchini.

I always great results with grapes no a trellis that has 4 posts with a cattle panel layer flat on top. The vine and the leaves stay on top of trellis and the developing grapes hang down between the fencing. We live in a very hot and extremely humid area but have no trouble with mold and mildew. Because they have incredible air circulation. Also I like the trellis high enough to easily walk under

Hi Kim and Jerry! Here in the Philippines okra is very common, the green variety of it. You can just steam it and pair it with "bagoong" (shrimp paste). it is best harvested and eaten in its small size since if it gets too big it becomes bitter and tough. Hope I can have the kind of okra that you harvested :)

Calikim and Gerry (cameraman) great harvest. You two were like two kids in a candy shop.
The only tip I have for you I growing graves is to get them on a trellis or something up in the air and make sure that the plenty of air flow. Getting them up in the air is the most important thing for airflow. That might also helps with the rats.

hey Kim! just wanted to say, you should harvest okra when they’re tender. that okra you harvested was overgrown and it would be too fibrous to enjoy! if you have overgrown ones, You could steam them but other wise, you could stir fry them and they’re definitely yummy !

2-3 inches is generally a good size to pick your okra if you are planning to eat it. I've heard some people like to pick and eat it at 1 inch. If it gets too long, it'll be tough and unpleasant to eat. I liked to make mine into tempura, but I heard many like to cook it in gumbo. It has a crunchy and slimy mouthfeel.

  • @heathere.6557

The red okra is a skinny variety so it's okay if it gets a little long, it wont get as tough as a more short variety. I like them lightly dusted in flour and garlic salt and shallow pan fry.

In my place, we call okra ladies finger, if you are into Indian food, you can try recipes like okra-tomato curry( served with rice), okra fry best with Roti, also you can add okra to prawns curry, and I saw them in some other Asian dishes especially with seafood, hmm I'm not sure if it's factually correct but my elders suggest okra for joint pains, I love to add peanuts to the okra fry, there are many Indian variations, If you are interested I'm pretty sure you'll find too many recipes.

Kim what's your recipe for tomato cucumber salad? Okra is more tender if smaller. If it feels hard and diff to slice it's too big. They are beautiful dried in a bouquet. I put them in container on fore place for fall. My family sliced in coin sized pieces and breaded in mix of flour and cornmeal. I changed to just cornmeal for more crunch and to avoid flour. Then fry or deep fry. Salt to taste. Yum!

The size of this red okra is perfect! If it gets a little bigger than that the red tends to be ok, but if you grow the green okra and it gets bigger than this it will taste woody....i love okra picked, fried, and raw! Slice it in pieces as big as the width of your little finger and eat it up!

  • @gardeningmomo7281

    Hi, Kim
If you hold the tip of the okra and try to snap it. If it snap then it's tender you can eat it but if it doesn't snap it's not edible anymore. You should just leave it on the plant and let it go to seed you can save seed from that.

Just yesterday, I picked a tomato that looked like it was ready to eat. It wasn't quite as red as the last one I picked; but, if I leave it alone, it may ripen more. I have several cucumbers that are close to being 8 inches long. The tag that came with the cucumber plants said that they would be ready to pick when they are 8-9 inches long. One of my pepper plants has a green pepper on it that is supposed to turn red, eventually. What I noticed, is that it has more flowers on it. I'm going to wait and see what happens with it.

U should try to grow Persian cucumbers, it is very productive and sweet, crunchy, and good for snacking. The skin also thin.
