This is the perfect explanation. NO ONE else provided this very helpful info: Larger side on top, 11/16 wrench to compress spring. Place in outer groove. Inner grove closest to motor is for housing. Others just said, make sure it locks....

Another successful repair. The middle spray arm was not spinning and Appliance Parts troubleshooting led me to taking a look at the chopper mechanism. The chopper was completely clogged and the impeller was dislodged and the nut holding it on was off. This is the 3rd repair to my dishwasher (new pump, new float valve) and Appliance Parts videos and parts were instrumental in the repairs. Thank you.

I have used this video three times now to replace the chopper blade assembly in my dishwasher. Since appliances are made so much more "breakable" nowadays, it pays to learn how to fix some of these easier things and save some money and frustration. This is a great, easy-to-understand teaching video that I will keep on my favorites list for all the future chopper blades I need to replace on this silly dishwasher.

Thank you very much for a very helpful video. We needed to replace this part on our older Whirlpool dishwasher. As you mention, the shaft was trashed and the chopper blade was MIA completely. We had cleared out shards of glass & other trash from the grinder compartment which is probably how the shaft broke in the first place. Took our tablet right over by the DW and watched your video step by step before & while we reassembled. Very helpful hints. We are running an empty load right now just to make sure it's running properly. Seems to be good. Thanks again. Your YT saved us hundreds in repairs.

I was telling my wife this spring *must* mean that this retracts, but it absolutely wouldn't (it actually came out with the upper part of the housing or I'd have left it where it was).

Please discuss which slot to use as there are two of them. Also, is the chopper supposed to lock into the black shaft of the impeller? How do you know whether the arms of the black shaft impeller have not already been sheared off? How does the black impeller engage with the food chopper shaft, even if installed correctly? I find I can still turn the new chopper freely. I may not be using the right word impeller and I hope you know what I mean. Also, how do you know that the metal grate on the chopper is seated onto the housing slot? There is no way to see it.

The chopper in my dishwasher keeps getting clogged. It doesn't seem like the spring mechanism/shaft is broken. But I clean it and the dishwasher works great, but it'll get clogged again in a couple months.
Should I replace it? Are the blades supposed to be sharp and "chop" whatever is in the way? Maybe the blades are dull and I need a replacement. Any advice appreciated!

at the 4:06 mark, you can see that there is a slot on the bottom side where the screen need to go. There was still some dirty water left in mine, so i couldn't see that slot. What screwed me up is that there is a square notch in back of this slot that looks like it's where the screen would go. So I was trying to drop the assembly into that spot, and of course there is no way it will fit there. So I wasted a lot of time trying to fit it into the wrong spot, so it may be worth point that out.

WARNING: After removing the clogged chopper/screen, it is possible (easy) to reinstall the cleaned or new chopper assembly wrong. You can even replace it's cover with that tight groove to hold the screen properly in place, so you can't rely on being able to install that cover. The chopper won't work unless you first get the 4-pronged plastic joint to FULLY engage with the motor shaft; sometimes the spring is not enough by itself to force that joint into the engaged position and the motor shaft is then able to rotate inside the plastic joint without actually moving the cutter blades. The dishwasher will then clean the top rack very nicely for awhile, weeks maybe (depending on how you pre-rinse food off dishes), until the screen clogs from all the water continuing to flow against/through it WITHOUT THE CHOPPER BLADES ROTATING ( the top rack will then stop getting water flow again). When installing be sure to fidget with manually turning the chopper blade -- while applying pressure toward the motor shaft to push the joint to a fully seated position on the motor shaft. Here's how to tell if you've accomplished this:
    1) see whether the cutter blade sits as flat against the screen as it did before installation (note how flat it sits before installing it).
    2) manually turn the cutter blade and feel for resistance of the motor (it turns with some resistance when fully engaged vs relatively free spinning of the blades when it is not).
    3) while manually turning the cutter blade a little bit, use a focussed flashlight on the very-hard-to-see-into junction of the plastic joint and the metal shaft to see whether the plastic is turning by itself without the metal shaft rotating (when engaged correctly the plastic joint and metal motor shaft must turn together).

Thank you very much for making and posting this very helpful video. I got all the way down to the cover and then could not get it loose. Inserting the screwdriver to pry the tab didn't seem to budge anything. I was able to fish out plastic fork from underneath the cover that I am hopeful was the cause of the problem, but I'm wondering if you have any further suggestions as to what to do if so much crud has built up around the tab that it won't move. Thank you for any further suggestions you might have to share. And thanks again!

I got the cover off to notice that the impeller had rung off along with the cover piece to hold the whole chopper assembly together. I then pulled everything out and gave it a good cleaning because the screen was filthy. My question is, during the reassembly of the chopper assembly, where does the washer with the tongues go? Which was does it face? I currently has the orientation of all the the assembly as follows (back to front)…
    Spring
    Flat Washer
    Chopper screen
    Impeller flat against screen
    Washer with Tongues (facing impeller)
    Cap
Does this sound right or should the washer with the tongue face another direction or be somewhere else? This seemed to be the way I could get the impeller and shaft to turn in sync. Any help is appreciated!

I’ve bought a new chopper assembly, and it’s supposed to be OEM, but the shaft is too short and it’s not making good contact with the motor. It is not spinning, and so it keeps getting clogged with debris. I think I’ve taken that thing apart and cleaned out the blade about 12 times now. Seems they don’t make a really good OEM replacement anymore.

Thanks, but I am not sure if this repair will work for me. My chopper is not turning. I confirmed this by making the machine think the door was closed, and watching as it drained. From my understanding the chopper should be functioning while draining, is this correct? I was able to turn the blade by hand, so I know it is free of any debris. My model is: 665.13849k601. I tried to follow this video to reinstall my chopper that seemed to have come un-assembled inside, when I went in to clean the area around it (based on another "cleaning" video). My problem is I can't seem to get the chopper assembly white plastic piece to lodge into place onto the black (motor?) piece. Every time I get the contraption wedged close to fitting, holding it with a wrench the way you show, I seem to miss the connection and everything pops apart on me--spring, washers, blade and little top holder piece. Is the top holder piece supposed to hold on better? Also I was using a 10-16ths wrench instead of 11 like you say. Could that be my problem?

All well and good, replacing the chopper assembly, which didn't like trying to masticate the small jewelry chain that somehow got into it and stopped it completely..
But there also exists as the "driver" of the chopper, a plastic "nose piece" on the motor shaft...
And it has been worn away to the point that it's not engaging at all.
So, is there a way to replace that plastic nose piece on the motor, without removing the machine, and getting a new motor??
I have a 12 year old "Kitchen Aid", that runs fine, but the monthly disassemble to clean the rotor is getting tiresome.
    ===============
I've thought of cutting a piece of fiberglass screen to fit in the bottom of the unit, below the heaters..
Which would keep any particles from getting to the masticator. And then vacuuming the screen weekly.
    Your suggestions appreciated.

Dear AppliancePartsPros Thank you. That's what I figured. A whole new motor , with the extra hassle of removing the whole dishwasher. Darn! What I'm going to try first, is to cut a piece of fiberglass screen door fabric in a circular shape to cover the slots that the water circulates into the pump through: with an off center hole in the circular shape so the arm assembly can fit through it:and by this means filter the water before it gets down to the non-rotating chopper assembly: and vacuum away the collected material as it builds up.Whadaya think? Will it work??Regards...

    • @appliancepartspros
      @appliancepartspros  8 років тому

Not sure if it would work but you could give it a try! If the screen restricts the water flow you may starve the pump and that will be another problem.

I thought this was a really good repair demo, but one part really confused me. When you put the wrench on the chopper to replace it you said and showed things too fast. You said, "make sure the smaller cutout is on the bottom and pointed to both cutouts." But, more important when describing putting it back with the wrench you said, "put 'this' at 12 o'clock on the wider sides." What is 'this'? Then you moved the center part back and forth. Why, and what are you doing?

Jim Jim Sorry for the confusion, you put the wrench at 12 so when you put it in the wrench is at the top and easy to pull out once you have the part in.

Here is a picture that should help. The thing to know is that the metal mesh part of the chopper assembly is not perfectly round. It has a big half and a small half. The small half fits into the slot. As some one else pointed out, beware of the false slot, too. pasteboard.co/HF3ghbC.png

Jim Jim what he means by 12 is like the hands of a clock and where the 12 is located. Does that help?

I could have helped so many people with this repair, but I'm just to late for all the comments.
