Matt, I can't thank you enough. I have been attempting to replace the chopper for a long time. I have watched other videos, but none as descriptive as yours. The trick was the 5/8 wrench. You should know that you are truly helping people. Thank you, thank you, thank you
First, thanks. I was able to fix my Kitchen Aid dishwasher after watching your video. The confusing part to me was which grove the screen fit in. It does not go into the groove closest to the motor but furthest away. Otherwise, you can't properly seat the cover. I was able to see this by blowing up the video. Thanks again.
I could hug your neck for the 5/8ths hack!!!!! 😊😊😊OMG!!! Reseating that blasted chopper had me so mad, I was ready to load the dang dishwasher up and take it to the dump!!!!!I just want you to know, for me, that tip has saved my sanity and restored calm, haha!!Thank you SO much for this video! Just goes to show, the smallest thing can make the BIGGEST difference!! 😊😊
Thanks so much for posting this detailed video. Our 7-year old dishwasher just stopped working. (It would fill with water, make a humming sound 4-5 times and then cancel/drain.) I was debating between a costly service call and a brand new dishwasher but thought I'd give this a try on my own as a last resort. I borrowed a couple of torx screwdrivers from my brother-in-law and set to work. Thanks to your detailed instructions, a few minutes later I found the culprits . . . a bread tie, a tiny chicken bone and several small pieces of plastic were all blocking the chopper! Once I removed them, cleaned everything out, put all the parts back together and turned on the power (35 minutes total), my dishwasher worked perfectly. I am one happy mama!! TYVM!!!
Thanks for this video. Before I saw this, for more than an hour, I was using god knows what not to try and assemble the chopper. The wrench was a gift from the skies.
Is the part of the motor that attaches to the chopper suppossed to be able to spin if you grab it with your hand? Not sure if that part is broken and not spinning the chopper or if it's the chopper, since the chopper screen needs to be cleaned about once a month. The little white teeth on the chopper look ok, but do they go bad and slip off the motor causing the chopper not to spin? If I remove the chopper will it cause any problems? The water drains into my regular garbage disposal under the sink so anything that goes in there would normally get chopped up when I turn on the disposal.
How you managed to understand that question I will never know. lol But you answered and it was true the drain was clogged and is now fixed . Thank you so much. I thought maybe the black flapper thingy had something to do with it if I had put it in backwards but no what you said about the food particles getting push seemed to be right on. I got it taken care of. Once again thank you so much. Deb
WARNING: After removing the clogged chopper/screen, it is possible (easy) to reinstall the cleaned or new chopper assembly wrong. You can even replace it's cover with that tight groove to hold the screen properly in place, so you can't rely on being able to install that cover. The chopper won't work unless you first get the 4-pronged plastic joint to FULLY engage with the motor shaft; sometimes the spring is not enough by itself to force that joint into the engaged position and the motor shaft is then able to rotate inside the plastic joint without actually moving the cutter blades. The dishwasher will then clean the top rack very nicely for awhile, weeks maybe (depending on how you pre-rinse food off dishes), until the screen clogs from all the water continuing to flow against/through it WITHOUT THE CHOPPER BLADES ROTATING ( the top rack will then stop getting water flow again). When installing be sure to fidget with manually turning the chopper blade -- while applying pressure toward the motor shaft to push the joint to a fully seated position on the motor shaft. Here's how to tell if you've accomplished this: 1) see whether the cutter blade sits as flat against the screen as it did before installation (note how flat it sits before installing it). 2) manually turn the cutter blade and feel for resistance of the motor (it turns with some resistance when fully engaged vs relatively free spinning of the blades when it is not). 3) while manually turning the cutter blade a little bit, use a focussed flashlight on the very-hard-to-see-into junction of the plastic joint and the metal shaft to see whether the plastic is turning by itself without the metal shaft rotating (when engaged correctly the plastic joint and metal motor shaft must turn together).
This comment is very very helpful. I have changed this 3 times because I was not engaged properly. I saw another video where a 5/8" box end wrench was inserted between the blade and the screen to retract the gear from the motor while you are assembling. Once you have the screen properly seated, remove the wrench by holding down the screen. You can then turn the blade and if the stars align, it will engage properly. At this point the screen will remain perpendicular to the housing allowing the cover to go on properly. The wrench trick was a big help to me. Good luck.
I'm trying to do this but with channel locks instead of a wrench. The spring is FULLY compressed all the way around, but the %$#@ shafts are still banging into each other instead of the white one sliding over the black one. This is SO much harder than it looks, no matter how you do it. Update: I got it! The problem was that the area was halfway underwater and I couldn't see the groove that the screen has to go into. There's a second bit of plastic at the top that looks like the right groove, but it's a red herring that was throwing me off until I used a rag to get rid of the water.
Very helpful and informative video-Thank you for posting. When I went to put the Chopper assembly back on I snapped the black plastic shaft that is attached to the motor that connects into the chopper. How do I replace that part?
It me again. Although I was sucessful in installing my chopper assembly upon arrival. Thanks to you guys I have since had my sink not draining properly. My question is could I have put the flapper thing in the dishwasher near the chopper assembly in backwards. Does it matter which side goes in first. That is the only thing I can think I may have done incorrectly. Dishwasher runs and cleans beautifully but whenever I use my sink the water doesnt drain. I know this probably doesnt make sense but thought I would ask. lol Thank you for your response in advance. Deb
+Deborah Pickert Not sure I follow but if the drain on the sink is clogged unrelated to the dishwasher you may have to check the garbage disposal, air gap or drain pipes for clogging. It is possible fixing the chopper may have pushed a bunch of residue out the drain hose the first time you used it. The check valve should push into the slot, there isn't a left or right.
Once in place is the chopper supposed to spin freely? The one I installed hugs the shaft but it spins. Does at a certain point of the washing cycle the shaft engages on the chopper ?
We'd be happy to help you figure that out, but we'll need some additional information about the model and the problem. You can give us a call at 1-877-477-7278 or you can chat us at our website: www.appliancepartspros.com/. We will need the model number for the appliance, so that we can look up diagrams and information about your specific unit to give you accurate advice. You can look here on our website to help you find the model number: www.appliancepartspros.com/modelnumber_locator.aspx
+Sam Chagnon You can post the problem along with the appliance model number on our repair forum and the techs can help you troubleshoot the problem. forum.appliancepartspros.com/
+Deborah Pickert When you pull the wrench out the 4 legs on the chopper should engage the the ones on the motor shaft. They do not really attach, just lock together with the spring tension of the chopper.

The chopper will have some play with it. We wouldn't recommend removing that chopper. What is your model number of the dishwasher?

When I put the cover back on it doesn’t click in on the right side. Is it not seated properly?
It doesn't sound as if something isn't seated correctly. Are you sure you installed everything correctly?
Very helpful and informative video-Thank you for posting. When I went to put the Chopper assembly back on I snapped the black plastic shaft that is attached to the motor that connects into the chopper. How do I replace that part?
I'm pretty sure I did it all successfully, but I wound up with this gray rubber stopper looking piece that I have no idea where it goes!

PrimalMiltos The coupler on the chopper connects to the coupler on the wash motor.

Hi, my W10083957 Chopper Assy. is always clogged. I clean it but after 1-2 weeks it is clogged again. Any advice? I do not see any broken parts.
