    Those are some very tough species to control. I would hit it with two apps of Garlon 3 on the fence lines and work back to something like 2-4D for future control. Nice looking sprayer!

    I did this earlier this spring in some new to us rented pastures. I went in with really hot loads of r-up and 2-4-d, to knock everything back good and plan on just using 2-4-d as a maintainer in the future. I’m jealous of that sprayer, my little 25 gallon sprayer on my quad took forever.

    Another good stuff for fences is "Sahara", or similar "total vegetation control". I used to use Pramitol pellets when I worked for United Gas Pipe Line-- we'd apply it under fences and cattleguards and pig traps and pipeline junctions and stuff where we didn't want ANYTHING to grow... I bought a 50 pound bag of it and it lasted for about 10 years before I used it all up... just throw a big drink cup full of pellets sprinkled into the cattleguard once a year and PRESTO NO weeds or anything trying to grow up in it! Can't seem to get Pramitol pellets anymore, they have the liquid at Rural King, but I haven't gotten any. I got "Sahara" from my seed/chem/fertilizer guy and it works great-- mix one bag (bout 5 lbs I think) in 100 gallons of water and go spray the fencelines... I lay the hand gun up on the fender of the tractor with the trigger lock on and have it spraying ahead of me along the fence line, so it fogs on a swath about 3 feet wide centered on the fence... it kills EVERYTHING and whatever lands on the soil kills everything growing on the soil and sprouting from seed for about 12 months, so you can do it once a year and keep a fence absolutely free of vegetation if you want... BUT beware, NOTHING will grow in treated soil that got sprayed for a year, not even grass... but for a fence, it's great particularly on electric fences because then you don't have ANY wet grass or weeds or anything shorting out the fence when it's wet and rainy...
    Plus, I've watched cattle, and they basically keep eating in the direction their going until they HAVE to change direction... why a lot of cows will eat up to the fence, then keep eating under the fence and stick their head through and push against the fence to keep eating til they finally run out of stuff they can reach (if they don't push the fence over or pop the wire or whatever first! They get rather single-minded and I think are kinda running on "autopilot" and as long as there's anything in front of them they can eat and are interested in they keep trying to get at it. Spraying the fence and killing everything in a 3 foot swath with the fence in the middle of it, if a cow is grazing toward the fence, when she comes up to the treated band and there's nothing else left to eat in front of her, she'll just instinctively turn and keep eating along the edge of the strip, or double back in a different direction, rather than go up to the fence and look for stuff on the other side of it (most of the time). Reduces pressure and pushing on your fences as well! Later! OL J R :)

Definitely going to have to pick up one of those sprayers though for our farm. Keep it up!

  • @lukestrawwalker
    @lukestrawwalker 3 роки тому

    Great you showed the followup... 2,4-D is good, but honestly I think you'd be much happier with an actual brush killer like Remedy... that's where the basal bark treatment really shines... when we had fences THAT overgrown we just mixed Remedy and diesel at a 3-4 parts diesel 1 part Remedy and hit it with the hand gun (or your boom buster nozzle shooting the fence) and you just rip along and I guarantee it's a "one shot one kill" treatment, and the Remedy will stick around as well, unlike 2,4-D which won't... (it has some soil residual, and it's a systemic herbicide, so once it's in, it keeps spreading to kill roots AND top growth, not just top growth like 2,4-D). There's a lot of good brush killers out now and pasture sprays-- we use Pasturegard in a smaller hand or 14 gallon electric sprayer like that to take out prickly pear and greenbrier on the farm and it's worked GREAT... we literally wiped out prickly pear patches that were about 100 feet in diameter in a single year with that stuff! Come back and push what's left up in a pile with the front end loader and burn it, and the grass comes in like gangbusters! Later! OL J R :)

  • @lukestrawwalker
    @lukestrawwalker 3 роки тому

    Remedy is also about $100 a gallon-- it's actually a little cheaper now, and it can be tank mixed with water and a good crop oil or "sticker" or adjuvant to really help it get taken in to the leaves and brushy stuff, which would help. You should try a gallon or two and see what you think. Mixed with water and sticker, it should work great on fences and stuff... Once you have the undergrowth cleared out and fried, you can come back and hit bigger stuff with the basal bark treatment (Remedy and diesel fuel) where you hit the bottom 12-18 inches of the trunks all the way around, doesn't take a lot and it WILL kill them dead as a hammer! Give 'em a year to dry and you can push them right out with that JCB no problems, and build burn piles. Later! OL J R :)

    There's not a whole lot more satisfying than getting back a fence line and killing off unwanted brush, but that 90 gallon tank certainly makes it alot more enjoyable. Nice setup you guys got there, I think it may be the most excited I hear you or Travis in a while when you got it. Seems like you guys are really making an effort to "tame" your fence lines and pastures this year. Can't wait to see the final outcome!

    Next time you can buy a lot sturdier radial tires for your wheelers made for forestry chores, Ryan. And later your kids can be used for brush cutting with a hand held Husqvarna 555RXT gas (or more probably a 535iRXT battery electric or a laser sabre). And due to the long rigg tube they can't hurt themselves. Only others including nosey cows! Lol Nice spray pattern and video!

    You're right it's a war... Rome wasn't built in a day, the pasture and fencelines didn't get overgrown with brush and vines in a day, and it won't be cleaned up in a day. The good thing is, you can take a gradual, systemic approach to it and REALLY clean that land up and get it back in good shape, so it can start producing more grass for you and creating less destruction to the fences, giving you more peace of mind with your livestock staying where they're supposed to be. It's a combined approach of mowing and spray will get you where you want to be-- it'll take a few years, but you can speed up or slow down the process to fit your time and budget; it'll get there and the sense of accomplishment and greater carrying capacity of your land, better condition of your fences, will really show the benefits of doing it, particularly over the long haul. AND, the longer you work at it, the easier it gets-- once you "get done" basically it becomes a matter of minor maintenance treatments and minor follow-up work to keep things in good shape-- which takes hardly no time at all and little money! BUT, the dividends in better grazing and more manageable pasture ground will keep paying dividends and grow year by year as you improve the land. Later! OL J R :)

    A good alternative is getting goats, Hannah. They will eat all they can reach and a little bit more including bark on the trees. With African dwarf goats they even prune the trees climbing up to the top with their original pattern free-climbing soles. Especially as my neighbor here in Sweden have them escape-artists, non reacting to electric fence for bisons - and my old apple trees are more tasty, but they are very nice to get them back with some help of cookies! Haha! Ps. I use construction site fence with overhang around my still wanted appletrees to be (a bit) sure.

  • @lukestrawwalker
    @lukestrawwalker 3 роки тому

    Fortunately we don't have honey locust trees, but I've seen plenty of them in Indiana on the BIL's farms. What a mess. We have mesquite and huisache which is just as bad, huisache especially since it is covered in thorns about an inch long or so that will pierce nearly anything (in fact they hollowed them out and used them as hypodermic needles during the Civil War!) Best thing to do with those thorn type trees that will perforate tires like that is just to spray them with a mixture of Remedy and diesel all around the base about a foot to foot-n-a-half up from the ground. It will kill them dead as a hammer and then they can EASILY be knocked over next year with the JCB, and pushed into a burn pile, or picked up with the pallet forks and moved to a burn pile, which prevents them from being shattered and scattered to perforate tires... The mower can take out the stuff that isn't as prone to take out tires to your hearts content, but better to just kill the tire-busting stuff in-situ and then get rid of it later in a "cleaner" way... Later! OL J R :)

    When you're dealing with a lot of established stuff (that's been growing a long time) it can take awhile to kill that stuff off... perennials have had time to develop a huge root system and have a lot of reserves and it takes a good strong dose of a systemic killer to really get in there and wear it down and kill it. Top growth killers like 2,4-D will kinda just get "shrugged off" by old established perennial stuff like that. It'll roast new growth that's popped up from seed pretty well, but the old stuff it just seems to get sick and hang on. For the money you're better off with a systemic like the Crossbow or Remedy... I am interested in your opinion on organic farming. I was a conventional farmer my whole life and I am retired now. I have read information that claims organic farming is more profitable and was wondering what your thoughts on this is. It’s hard for me to believe if this type farming is more profitable the majority of farmers wouldn’t do it. If you have a video on this or would make one I sure would like to watch it. I suspect others would too. Even a comment would be appreciated.
