With space often limited in home and project studio, multi-channel preamps in 1 or 2u format can be a good fit. This Black Lion Auteur Quad packs four straight-forward, no-nonsense preamps into one rack space. Using this on a variety of sources and as an insert on tracks or the 2-bus, the performance / cost per channel with output transformers for some analog vibe are tough to deny on the Quad...
If you get a chance, check out my preamp Channel Count Poll and see what others are doing in their studios. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxQXPwrJ9Sq5S45GZUW55SZQzpbugTv3ei

Really solid sounding and well spec-ed preamp, and good value for money, like most (not all) the gear BLA makes. And lovely that it has proper level meters!
The only 2 things they really failed at by omission are A) an output fader/pot, because being able to drive a preamp at will and still interface well with the fiddly & level-picky digital world should always be made easier, in this day and age; and B) a couple of front panel mix XLR inputs that mirror and override the rear inputs for e.g. the last 2 channels, making it user friendly for on the fly connections when racked.
All of the above in my opinion & experience, of course.

PS: check out BLAs Seventeen take on the FET comp, if you can - I have & use 2, find them fantastic in terms of sound, build and versatility, all the 1176 character but a bit more hifi and cleaned up, and all the functions & options one could wish for.

BLA makes great gear imo and I agree on the omissions...it seems there is always something lol. I do want to get a Seventeen in to check out. I really like the wet/dry mix and built-in sidechain - this just makes sense on modern gear.

Hi Todd, after watching some of your mic preamp videos I'm thinking of buying the Cloudlifter CL-1 along with the Warm Audio WA73-EQ to go into my Apollo X6 audio interface. The only thing is, after watching another one of your videos I'm no longer sure whether to go for the UA 710 instead of the WA73 as I only need one preamp and I'm already quite happy with my UAD EQ plugins, e.g. their 1073 emulation which can be inserted in the Unison slot of their desktop software. I'm still quite inexperienced at all this, so, assuming I've made up my my to mind to buy an external preamp, do you think that what I'm planning makes sense or am I missing something important? And of these two preamps, which one would you choose? : ) Kind regards, Darren (Wales, UK)

Hello, nice video. Can you help me, I'm struggling here going through the manuals of RME ADI 2 Pro FS converter and RME Fireface UCX II. I would like to have top clean AD convertion as I'm going to put some top end hardware analog mastering gear (like Neve etc.) going from external workstation to the computer. I'm looking at the specs of both, one (AFI FS) is much more expensive than UCX but I like the UCX's direct recording on USB stick and a stand alone option. Yet, I'm afraid that AD convertion will not be as great (read: top notch) as with RME ADI 2 Pro FS. I wqs looking at technical data and there are diferences in analog IN specs, but are they so great that it matters? And it's confusing that on FS it says it has Analog "stereo" input on the rear as a main converter spot, and on the UCX II it has just two Mic/Line inputs, and the comparison chart shows, like this is somehow not the same. How is not the same? O.K. it has a mic preamp, but can't you also record stereo source through it? Will this preamp's somehow destroy the quality of the signal going in as they will not on pro FS? One is called audio interface and the other (FS) a AD converter. Total confusion. One doesn't need drivers to play (FS; like that is a big problem) and the other does not need computer. So, is there any difference (like you would hear) in quality of recording if you record just stereo source in 48KHZ quality. I don't want to spend almost 1000 dollars more for the same quality. :)) If you can help, thanks in advance.
