Using Satellites to Detect Plastic From Space | The Ocean Cleanup

  • Locating accumulations of plastic in the ocean is the first step in cleaning it up - but hunting plastic at sea is costly and resource-intensive.
Scientists are working on a new way to find these hotspots: using hyperspectral satellites to detect 'plastic fingerprints' from space. We have now published an important hyperspectral dataset in collaboration with researchers from the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, Hawaii'i Pacific University, and the University of the Aegean and funded by the European Space Agency.
Hyperspectral sensors can find plastic from orbit. But how exactly does it work, and what are the challenges? Robin de Vries, Researcher at The Ocean Cleanup, talks us through it, shows how this cutting-edge dataset was collected, and explains how the dataset has been made available open-access to aid the global push to eliminate ocean plastic pollution.

A lot of the plastic trash that ends up in the ocean starts its' journey along the roadsides and other places where some people carelessly toss their litter. When it rains and/or the wind blows the litter makes its' way into drainage ditches, then to streams and rivers and finally to the ocean.

I keep being so impressed with this young man and his now hugs team. What a absolutly brilliant idea!! They probably have a underwate machine in the making that can travel the oven floor and get the heavy plastics that sink. This is probably way future, because keeping it out to begin with is the most important. I would love to see more of the river cleaning. It doesn't have to be new, just some footage. It's satisfying to see. Plus the more videos, better. Chances of people seing. Keep up the awesome work!!

It would be interesting to see if there was a way to add substances to plastic that make it much easier to detect. If you manage to convince all plastic manufacturers around the world to add those substances, all the waste afterwards would be much more visible from space.

We know the job doesn't end once the plastic is extracted from the water. All the plastic we catch in the GPGP is returned to shore for specialist processing, ready to be given a new life by our partners. We aim for our plastic to be used in innovative and sustainable products to ensure it never re-enters the marine environment. Right now, our partners are working hard on our next designs!

This is amazing work and very much needed, however bringing education to the 3rd world countries on how harmful microplastics are to the oceans and any living organism. In all my travels, us westerners are so careful to try to recycle or minimize the use of plastics but can't help noticing the poor coastal countries just don't care...they keep dumping plastics in the oceans and you have to focus on educating them otherwise you will continue to try to clean up something that is bottomless.

The more and faster you can clean up these plastics the better because UV radiation breaks down plastics into microplastics and nanoplastics .
This is very harmfull for all life , its disrupts the body and reproduction .
This has to be don fast because the amount of UV is increasing because of the declining earths magnetic field .
We see also the effects of that , the magnetic poles are speeding up to reach each other at Indonesia and the South Atlantic Anomaly is increasing in size .
