DDLC, the original one, was the first experience I had with anime in general. I was pretty young at the time and was extremely averted to watching anything to do with anime, and so I kept ignoring the videos about DDLC youtube would reccomend me. I even went as far as to start clicking the "Do Not Reccomend" option on any DDLC videos I'd come across. But for some reason UA-cam kept reccomending them to me, until one day I gave in and watched, I believe Jacksepticeye's playthrough of DDLC, all the way through. I was hooked. For months I was chasing the same feeling that DDLC gave me and that snowballed into me watching anime regularly, wanting to learn how to draw, write stories, and now even code my very own mod for the game. I think it's safe to say that DDLC changed my life.
I just finished The House of Fata Morgana the other day and despite being my first time playing a first visual novel the build up and especially the ending really pay off. Thanks for the recommendation on the stream.
Glad to see a new video. I have only play 1 VN Katawa Shoujo (I've also played Danganronpa, but imo it is more a graphic adventure than VN). I really loved it (Lilly best girl), so I was looking for some recommendations. I think I'm gonna try Steins Gate (I've already seen the Anime, but I think the vn might be more complete) and Fata Morgana. Thanks for the recommendations.
Hell yeah, team Lilly all the way! I remember thinking that the S;G anime was pretty faithful to the VN when I watched it, though there were of course things they couldn't afford to go as in-depth with. I also really enjoyed reading Steins;Gate 0, though I haven't watched the anime for that. Absolutely check out Fata Morgana. Also if you want more emotional slice-of-lifey stuff like Katawa Shoujo, maybe consider something from Key's catalouge (Clannad, Rewrite, Little Busters etc). I have to warn you that they're all long as hell, though. Hope you'll have fun with it
The golden age is definitely not behind us, but the thing is that western fans are only exposed to a small amount of visual novels and everybody wants to read what everyone else is reading, so they all end up reading the same 5 visual novels or so.
accidentally just finished the Miyuki happy ending. Before this moment (10 minutes ago) i had no fucking clue what visual novels were, i was so surprised the game ended like that and then i learnt about different routes and that honestly sounds amazing to me. Anyway it's crazy that i played 3 visual novel games before finally realising what visual novels were. (i played some of Danganronpa 1, Doki doki (loved this game so much) and finally You and me and her)
I just finished saya no uta. Dear god gen urobuchi is a madman. His writing can be edgy and obtuse at times but his endings always hit so hard. I got too many recs from your channel
Great video! Stumbled upon this video about two years after I played (and loved) my first VN, 999! I’m also playing Katawa Shoujo for the first time these days thanks to Gigguk’s latest video, and I’m loving it too (Hanako best girl)! Def curious to get into more in the future, but like you, I’ve always been apprehensive about the “dog in the kitchen” that you mentioned. That being said, thanks so much for making a beginner video for readers such as myself! Def curious to try out your other recommendations as well!
Recommendations in Video Short Game like Beginner friendly - The Nonary games series Doki Doki literature club The Song of Saya Planetarium Long but highly recommended :- The house in Fata Morgana
Just the video I needed. I've always wanted to dive deeper into VNs after playing the first Zero Escape game and the original Phoenix Wright trilogy, which are personal favourites of mine, but have always been so absolutely clueless on where to begin, especially when it comes to the variety that have fewer elements of traditional video games. This was a highly informative and entertaining video. Now if you'll excuse me, I really should play Steins;Gate.
Oy! Hello felllow Scandi! Salutations from Sweden! I love Visual Novels myself and recently got a request to make a "where to start"-guide for AVNs and this did help me get a few pointers, especially on the misconceptions part. Thank you!
Lol a dude on Instagram recommended muv luv trilogy and I was like "yeah I need to start with something if I want to read more vn's" I didn't know the trilogy would take me over 100 hrs to complete, but man I'm so glad it was my first vn, even though I'd not recommend it to everyone.
when you put in raging loop i was fucking hyped. my favorite vn of all time. any similar recommendations you could help a bro out with? a vn that's not too linear and is just engaging. be it mystery, thriller, or psychological
Well, the same person who told me to check out Raging Loop also recommended The Sekimeiya: Spun Glass, so that might be worth looking into (though I haven't gotten around to playing this one myself yet). Besides that I can't really say I've dived into much more obscure stuff, so the recommendations I give might be somewhat surface-level, but the obvious comparison that jumps to mind would probably be Umineko, which is obviously great. Chaos;Child (or really anything from the Science Adventure series) is a really fun and trippy read that I would also recommend checking out. And as I mentioned in the video the Zero Escape games (though not really 100% "pure" VNs) have some great mysteries, and all three of them have fun and unique ways of playing on their non-linear structure. Hope somehing here might have interested you
I have started vn with DDLC and I've gotten in the mod Blue Skies mod later on which is more like a true romance story with still the subject of depression within it, have only done both Yuri's ending and currently doing Sayori's. I've also played a pretty unknown true vn : Tricolour Lovestory, it's a chinese vn taking place there and the voices are chinese. But basically you're alone without your parents on a business trip but your parents are bad cause they don't want let you choose your path for college and don't you to see your friends because they want to marry because of business if i remember. Sorry i'f i'm badly explaining, but finally the story is pretty much you take on painting course and try hard to success your exams to be free of your parents and you draw with the girl you choose and make closer bonds with her. That's pretty much the story. But i have done a long pause and not ended yet so not sure if this is high quality but this seems fine if you don't mind chinese voices. But overall what retains me from playing more vn is that it's taking much time, always related to romance, and since i'm not native english speaker, it's even longer to check some words you don't understand.
Is something like software where you can write script and script will go down by lines when i will be hitting space or some other key exist? I wanna record some visual novels, but in my language not in English and if i will prepare script like this and have him on second monitor it will be more enjoyable for audience (than for they will be waiting for i will translate). Most harder in this case is i think to app / software need to changes lines when i will be hitting some keys outside of software applitacation. IF someone know about something like this please share knowledge.
That sounds like a really cool idea! You might be able to do something like that using a teleprompter program. There are probably tons of free options online for you to use. That would allow you to prepare a script beforehand, and then scroll through it as you read it. I don't think I can post links here in the UA-cam comments, but you should probably find something if you search 'teleprompter program' or something like that in Google. Like you said, you might need to take some extra steps in order to have the program respond even when the window is inactive, but I hope you find some workaround for it Hope that helps
Katawa Shoujo is my favorite VN of all time. It treats people with disabilities wholly and fully as human as everyone else, who have wants and needs as well. Plus it’s not a “pity me” story. It wasn’t my first (that was 999), but it really stuck with me. Since then I’ve played every VN on this list with the exception of House of Fata Morgana. (Maybe that’s because I’m on an Otomate kick on the Switch right now, but still…) Great list and video!
I'm new to the VN world and I've been a gamer my whole life. Recently I played and finished my 1st vn. DOKI DOKI LITERATURE CLUB PLUS. I was surprised I finished and was invested. I played my 2nd 7 DAYS OF ROSE. I found out this genre was part of my tasting. I just got a Steam Deck for the purpose of playing vn games. So I'm looking around here for vids and reviews. I'm currently playing steins gate
The same thing happened to my Steam Page after playing The Zero Escape Series. I actually caved and tried Being a Dik. And well..... Yeah I really liked it for reasons that no one will believe me lol
Is the "golden age" of visual novels really over or is the western fandom just new and growing? With all the newbies being too busy reading the classics to check out the new hidden gems?
lmao bro, right now i've been in state of tired of modern gaming/competitive lol ( i play some ps1 games for passing time ) just tried to play my first vn games shibuya scramble, i never thought that am hooked lmao, even thou am not a fan of novels books
Most of what I talked about or showed should be available on Steam. Jast USA also has a big selection (that site is very NSFW though, so be aware). I think the Nintendo Switch has a pretty wide lineup of titles as well, in case you'd want to play on the go
as a female VN fan who play eroge, yaoi, yuri and otome there is atleast in the otome community part of it go more new ones localized though i think nekonyan got quite new ones as well to be honest and iv seen people reveiw, game play them as well currently im on koikari love fore hire i really dislike the twins though my fave emi, sumi and momko atm
Visual Novels are amazing, is one of the best ways to tell a story. The House in Fata Morgana is a masterpiece.
This was hilarious and informative to someone who’s closest experience to a visual novel was DDLC+
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it

Nice. Evangaard uploaded again. I have been watching all of your past videos lately. Great UA-camr!

Im obsessed with your vids bro. Entertaining, informative content and funny too
11:05 THIS IS ABSOLUTELY THE ULTIMATE CHAD MOMENT RIGHT THERE! I ALWAYS HAVE A BIIIIIIG RESPECT FOR THAT KIND OF PEOPLE!
7:14 im fucking crying that was amazing
I see House in Fata Morgana, I smash like
An other amazing VN I surprisingly didn't see here was" you and me and her " I'd recommend it to more veteran VN readers tho but it's still amazing
I actually picked that one up recently when I was looking into what had come out in the last few years. I'll probably check it out soon

I just finished saya no uta. Dear god gen urobuchi is a madman. His writing can be edgy and obtuse at times but his endings always hit so hard. I got too many recs from your channel
Brilliant video
DDLC made me curious about visual novels. Totono made me love them. Looking forward to seeing what else is out there
8:34 well said
The best part of being a VN fan is
finding the best version to read
The dog being over 18 joke was genius, well done this video was great!
Planetarian also has an anime adaptation by David Production!! I never knew it was a visual novel to start!!
2:54 Watching this while playing through the retranslated story modes for MBTL was surprising...
Have you played all the Fata Morgana stuff including requiem for innocence, reincarnation, 7th lair, short stories (online ones too) and Erasmus?

Alright guys, easiest way to start reading Fate/Stay Night. Challenge rating: Impossible.
Planetarian is great and the soundtrack although short is amazing as well.

@@Evangaard appreciate it. Loved the video 💯💯
if you havent played higurashi, i found a lot of similar thematic elements to raging loop. in fact i feel like raging loop is inspired by higurashi
@@emotegisoda ahh agreed, i played a bit. Should pick it up
Like someone mentioned up above, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. I heard Raging Loop is similar to it in a sense.
it was hilarious and informative and I discovered this is really isn't my thing.

There's been A LOT of great new VN coming out every year, i think the top list is heavily based on nostalgia biased tbh
The Grisaia music in the background is killing me 😂😂
Great video as always my guy.. also the fate series is in my list of animes to watch, might have to reconsider now lol
Rance for the win
Nice video
What's wrong with a VN having +18 content? How is the censored version the superior one?
Can anybody tell me what the Visual Novel at 1:17 is Thank you in advance..
Good list
read full metal daemon muramasa everybody. that is all.
I really need to get on that. It's been sitting in my backlog ever since the English version came out
Anyone know what game the girl at 12:47 is from?
She's from the VN 9-nine. Specifically she's the main heroine of the fourth episode
What a visual novel?
The same thing happened to my Steam Page after playing The Zero Escape Series. I actually caved and tried Being a Dik. And well..... Yeah I really liked it for reasons that no one will believe me lol
I'm curious as to what they may be aside from the obvious, going off of first impressions it doesn't seem like it'd have the deepest story
Check out the visual novel we're working on :) ua-cam.com/video/RlNOWA_VOMo/v-deo.html
I must say I'm disappointed in Steam for leaving out so many VNs that aren't supported by Steam.
Accurate
