    Is it me, or does this performance have more meaning in her age? Her voice was certainly stronger in her youth, but my god she gives it so much emotion, and the words are more meaningful somehow.

    Y’all in the comments need to call a truce. They are both legends. They have different voices. They both sang beautifully. Don’t compare them to who’s better because both of them are exquisite at what they do. They both deserve the same praise as the other.

      Betty was the original Grizabella on Broadway and Sarah was the original Jemima in the West End production. They are singing the duet part of Memory like it's sung in the show. I don't see how or why anyone would compare the two.

      It’s not about just being able to hit the notes, this performance has the weight of life experience behind it, what it lacks in technical excellence is more than made up by the artistry and weariness conveyed through the vocals imo. I always feel a dissonance when a young attractive singer with perfect vocals sings something like “I was beautiful then”, “all alone in the memory of my days in the sun”. The whole song is about someone past their prime years, I think only somebody past their prime years in real life can truly do this song justice.

      Yes, like Rosemary Clooney. She made the age in her voice part of her interpretation of the music.

    Betty Buckley still amazes me being 63 in this video and singing that entire climax of the song all the way from "Touch me, it's so easy to leave me. It''s so easy to leave me
    . All alone with the memory, Of my days in the sun" in ONE EFFING BREATH! Geezus I've never heard anyone sing this song better, I've never heard anyone come close to matching that amazing breath control. She truly is a treasure to the stage and screen.

    Andrew can't help it He is about powerhouse voices. The best there is. He is overworked. Let him listen to his work.

  • @intheory9772
    @intheory9772 4 роки тому +33

    If you look closely and pay good attention to Andrew near the beginning he takes a big gulp, swallowing his tears, hence his 'gnawing' throughout the performance. This happens to me also, but I can't stop the tears no matter how hard I try to, I find it better and more therapeutic to just let them fly away as they will. There is no shame when you witness such beauty. I had the pleasure of seeing Sarah live in March of 2001 during her La Luna tour. I still have this vivid memory of her wrapped in a large red cloth that nearly covered the whole stage and I also remember her floating above the stage in a long silk dress. It was quite the production and was truly enchanting, and I was awe struck the whole time. Magnificent!

    • @singtweetypie

      I saw two of Sarah Brightman's shows - Luna also being one of them..and there is no one like her. Absolutely two of the best shows I have seen in my lifetime. Love her so much and love how theatrical she is with her eyes and her face and always reminds me of Kate Bush - another superstar.

    • @intheory9772
      @intheory9772 4 роки тому +3

      @@singtweetypie You have superb tastes. Best show I've ever been to also, and the only one I really remember, though I haven't been to very many. I was also much younger than most of the attendees. I guess she just transfixed me into such a trance that I will never forget those precious hours.

    • @singtweetypie
      @singtweetypie 4 роки тому +3

      @InTheory. Thank you. I have been to many shows and hers still stand out in my mind as something so incredibly special. I still remember Sarah introducing a then unknown singer called Josh Groban during her La Luna concert in Toronto - and singing with him. It was magic.
      I also saw 'Harem' another of her absolutely spectacular shows. I had/have all her albums and played them non stop (along with Bocelli) for my then young children so they would learn to appreciate all types of music. In 2000 she apparently outsold both Elton John and the Rolling Stones in album sales - so clearly - many loved her voice and her music just as much as you and I do.

    • @intheory9772
      @intheory9772 4 роки тому +2

      @@singtweetypie Magic is the perfect word to describe her and her talent as a singer and a performer, and just the person she is in life. I hope these forms of art don't die out because of lack of interest of the younger generation AKA movie fanatics. I can barely watch many new movies because of all the CGI incorporated and relied upon in so many films today and the super hero genre though very popular doesnt interest me in the least. Nor do many remakes and reboots. I enjoy movies that make you feel something deep inside like many classics and many independent and foreign films. TCM is on all day for me no matter what I am doing. I feel these classics make me smarter and somewhat worldly. One of my all time recent favorites is Amelie. It's a beautiful story with amazing actors and a fantastic director and it is so very relatable to me and my life. There are many good performers and singers today, but it is an all out assault on the senses and not much serenity in it or worldly knowledge. I've seen Romeo and Juliet and The Phantom of the Opera live shows twice in my lifetime and would love a resurgence of both The Phantom and I would still love to see a live performance of Cats by real Broadway stars and there are others I would love to see also that I can't think of right now. Seeing live shows like this opens the mind, the heart, and all the senses. I would also love to see a Philharmonic orchestra of some kind in my lifetime. There is nothing better than a room full of the best of the best instrumentalists putting on a live performance. I can only dream and hope. Thank you for the stimulating conversation. I wish you a bright future and many hopes and dreams to be realized in your life.🙂❤️

Had to look it up, but I did recognize that it was a Kennedy Center Honor for Dolly Parton, Steven Spielberg, and Andrew Lloyd Webber. It occurred on Dec. 3, 2006, and also honored classical music conductor Zubin Mehta, and musical artist Smokey Robinson. What a night of talented people being honored!

    Andrew Lloyd Webber is a GENIUS equal to Johannes Strauss. His memory will be ETERNAL.

    As Sir Andrew Lloyde Webber famously said. "There is no specific role in Cats for Sarah but I intend to give her one anyway" which he did

    Jeeze what's with all the Sarah hate? Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's how the song goes in the real version...the main older cat singing Memory and at that random part in the middle, another younger female cat sings a bit until the main older cat cuts in again. And Sarah originated the role of that random younger cat singing for a bit. I don't know the names of these cats but haha. They're not supposed to be the same voice type here... So it wasn't like they just had Sarah cut in for 20 seconds for the hell of it, but b/c that's how the song goes and these are the parts they both respectively played...

      They're hating on me because of me calling out bad people. Not Brightman.

      Grizabella is the older and Jemima is the young cat. There is also a reprise of the song with Jemima solo and the choir.

      blackngold cuttlefish for some reason this made me laugh so loud! A person who happens to have the name Sarah thinking all the comments about “Sarah” - in a video with Sarah Brightman in it - are nevertheless about Sarah the commenter! 😂
