When you mentioned the lightsticks, I remembered another kpop slang: black ocean. It's one of the saddest, I think. A black ocean happens when a fandom turns off their lightsticks collectively to "hurt" a group they don't like while the group is on stage performing. I think it has happened mostly at award ceremonies/concerts, because many fandoms gather there. I may be an EXO-L, but my Melody heart will always stay around. BtoB brought me to kpop. I will forever be grateful for that. I will always support every member and the whole group. Thank you also for bringing amazing music to this world.
speaking of the Aussie boys, skz is having a comeback soon too! pls invite them to get real! in the past 2 years, chan has been going on live every weekend and talks to stays about the realest and most random shit about life so i believe he’s the best guy to guest on the show. looking forward to this!! 🥺🙏
i think definitely the industry pumps this idea to fans head if they dont stream their idols are gonna fall out of popularity and disband, so in the end the company profits bc of this and eventually their are those people that get overly obsessed with streaming and can become aggressive/toxic to other fans or fandoms for not streaming. its super sad what the greed of capitalism can do to people.
this came at a perfect time for me, I have always been all about the music first and have pulled back from a lot of fandoms because they make everyone miserable. I hope more people get to find their healthy balance. I agree 100% agree that "toxic fans" scare away people who could really get into the music and artists. Happy and healthy truly is all that matters in life!!
Yeah exactly. I accidently stumbled on twt and there I saw where fans were like if you want our artist at top or want this award then stream like a crazy fan and buy album in bulk and vote from diff accounts... And I was like.... What ????? . And also I saw some toxic fans comments and I Explored more ( you know curiosity 😂). I was shocked and couldn't believe that those comments were real and I immediately closed twt for my mental peace 😂😂😂 I was just happy when they discussed about this topic which is considered very sensitive topic for idols to discuss..
@@paridhikag5440 I agree! its almost surreal to hear them address it so directly and candidly but its such a welcome change and people REALLY need to hear it. Toxic "fans" are incredibly selfish and dont think about how their behavior impacts everyone else. Whether they are hurting real fans, scaring away potential fans, amplifying other toxic fans because they feel validated or hurting the artists who seem to only want to spread love and their music. I dont think a single artist would ever condone their behaviors 🥲 hopefully someday they will become even less common.
@@anyoneelsekitten Yeah. I agree with you. I too hope someday non kpop fans won't see kpop as a toxic place. . I am a kpop fan for more than 7 years now. I am a fan of 2 kpop groups and for others I am a casual listener means I just listen music and that's it. For those 2 groups I just listen music or watch content if I like and leave a positive comment. And I never compare 2 diff artist and also members from same group. The thing is when you can be a good person and spread positivity then why to chose a negative path. That's it.
@paridhi_2517 100% agree again. I've been a fan since 2019 but have loved music my entire life and when ever possible in any music space I do my best to take care of it and always leave it better than how I found it. There is never a reason to spread hate, cut others down, be rude or inconsiderate. At the end of the day you never really regret being a positive person and that's just how I choose to live as well🥰
@@anyoneelsekitten Yeah. You are right we can never regret for being a positive person.. See there are sometimes when we didn't get connect or like some music or content or it can be anything. So then the best we can do is don't listen and watch that content or music. But nowadays some people chose to take some time and write hateful comments and compare with other artist and then they name it as " opinion ". Hateful comment can never be an opinion. Personally when I didn't like something or it is not of my taste I just don't watch or listen to it. That's it. Why I will waste time to write harsh comments and then replying them.. When we write something good then others do reply with good words. So we like that kind of conversation. Just like ours we liked each others choice of words and thoughts.
Fan wars were a thing even 10 years ago. The only difference that before the vibe in general was nice because kpop wasn’t that huge back in the day and people tried to find some friends in that small community. Sometimes it wasn’t that easy because it wasn’t cool to be a kpop fan. Nowadays when kpop gets bigger there are so many toxic fans who disrespect previous generations and act like their idols are the only ones who make kpop globally famous. Shame on them.
The "vibe" in the past might have been nice for foreign fans, but it most certainly wasn't for Korean fans. The fanwars of 1st and 2nd gen groups are legendary. Straight up brawls, property damage, physical injury, even rape allegations were not out of the question. And that's just what fans did to each other, what some did to the idols they didn't like or even their favs was worse. The only good thing now is that it's mostly moved online as that largely removes the physicality of it, but that also in no way lessens it - in fact, it only makes it easier.
My discovery road: -Became a Melody about 2 years ago, got curious about Peniel's character and Discovered that he was part of a podcast...the Get Real Podcast! -Peniel then has been my Ult Bias (see what I did there? lol) -Fell in love with BM's energy, love for life and positivity, then ultimately became a HK! And thanks to that I attended my first ever K-pop Concert when KARD came to the states!! -Ashley is like the bff I would love to have in my life! She is so real, relatable and has this energy that has no time for BS (neither do I). I had no idea she is a former Idol or that her group has two forever group members ('til like a week ago). -So it has been about two years and I am total DIVEr! -Thanks to DIVE STUDIOS I am able to be further exposed to amazing human beings like Eric Nam, Epik High, Alexa, Junny, Harry + more!! - This is a short summary of my journey as a DIVEr, HK and Melody (I am also a Shawol but that is for another day lol), but in another words I just want to express my gratitude, because y'll have unknowingly been there for me--and many others I am sure - So thank you from the bottom of my heart for doing all that you do. And I do agree 100% with Peniel 56:33 that I too, do my best to reflect my "idols", as you are my inspiration to take care of myself Mentally andPhysically, and to always give it my all and my best in what ever I am doing. - K Im done - ---- Sorry not Sorry but the long azz post, but I just somehow felt compelled to write this essay lol!! --
I’m glad you guys are having an open and honest conversation about fan culture, highlighting the good and bad. We definitely need more of this, maybe even dedicated episodes to different aspects of fan culture if possible. And since this industry thrives on parasocial relationships, I would really love to hear your stances on this part of the k-pop industry and fans. Going in detail on the way idols interact with fans, the fan service, the things fans expect from idols (standards of being an idol) and the different ways fan view/interpret their relationship with idols. Also the stalker ‘fans’/sasaengs and how that affects the k-pop experience for both idols and other fans. Great video as always❤
I'm glad Ashley mentioned the people who pretend to be their fans to gain some clout over the accident bcus not gonna lie, the amount of people I fought for this exact reason. Ladies code is more than that, their music before and after is so good and deserves much more appreciation
Always love "BFF vibe" they have. Having lots of special guest is great, but chilling with your bff will always be my fav. Peniel line "say hello to my little friend" really cracks me up and the highlight if this episode is BM's wink+lip biting face 🤣
i'm glad they have a place to address toxic fan culture. only the most brave veteran artists even mention it on any kind of broadcast, and those that do are either called heroes or get backlash.
This is the most important episode of GR. Cuz we all, as fans, know how these things happen in a daily basis, and it's not pretty! Having idols talking about these issues is so important, maybe some fans can really get real and stop some of those bul**t. Hopefully they will.
I really liked the whole interview. I love kard too much, I have been hidden kard for 5 years and they are so important to me. It is true that they made me happy millions of times. I met them at a difficult time and they made me smile, that's why I love them with all my heart and am so grateful. I'm glad to know that matt receives all that love from hidden kard, we appreciate their music and we want the best for them
This was a GREAT great episode. All episodes of Get Real are great but I loved the conversation about toxic kpop fandom behavior (40:42) and especially Ashley saying that doing things like mass streaming to the point where it interferes with your daily life isn't what they as idols/artists want from their fans- being a fan should be enjoyable for everyone. Artists/groups really don't address the issue enough, which is too bad but it's nice to hear those toxic fans being called out for what they are 👏 HEALTHY FAN CULTURE, everyone.
43:00 I agree with ashley so much. when people are like “stream this song at this time for this amount of times so it can chart” i’ve never listened to music like that. If a song is really good I’m obviously gonna fucking listen to it and it’ll naturally be on a loop for me.
I love junny and ph1 but there’s something about you three (the original hosts) that hits differently. It’s so nice to see you all together again! I hope BM comes on more often 😊
i agree about the cancel culture thingy too bcs some people doing that on social media are really just doing that as some kind of performative activism i feel like? its like not even a constructive criticism and its always out of hate instead of care about the actual issue too so its just honestly frustrating to see. like there are actual serious and worse things going on in the world and like ashley said, they're all humans soo yup.
45:20 OMG DIVE STUDIOS PLEASE DO THIS it would be so interesting for the artists and fans to sit down and have a conversation about kpop and music and fan-idol relationships!
They really give siblings energy ❤ peniel and bm took care of Ashley when she was talking about her fans, they were quick at expressing the concern and peniel already ask for tissue ❤
im honestly really glad you guys discussed the extreme toxicity of these fandoms (while also acknowledging that its not everyone) but it really is crazy and kinda gets to dangerous points for the singers as well. also all these few loud toxic fans or antis are just horrible and clearly need help lol like who takes their time out to create multiple accounts and harassing ppl constantly daily?? thats just literally… seek help man😭 but yeah overall im happy y’all were full honest about ur thoughts on it especially that its coming from singers, we can hear your end of your feelings about these crazy situations and hopefully those ppl will learn that y’all see the garbage they throw and that its actually affecting ppl cause yeah you’re entertainers but that title shouldn’t mean that you’re stripped from being human cause y’all are still human at the end of the day.
Always proud to be a melody 💙 Hidden kard and lavely are fandoms that we can trust and be friends with. Get real listeners let's make our hosts proud of us too like their group fandoms! 💪
I’m so busy I can’t watch this until I get some free time but i wanna say I’ve been waiting for BM to back im sure this ep will be interesting can’t wait to watch it
I love this podcast, I came here first bcs of Peniel, bcs I love his group, but ended up being a big fan of all the hosts and happy to get to know the guests here. I wish I can meet you guys in real life someday, but I can't promise I won't be nervous.
I loved this episode ❤ especially talking about how serious and toxic fandoms can get. I’ve definitely been a fan of many various artists and have been intimidated by some fandoms because of the standards that are built up. Just like how y’all mentioned some people purchasing so many album copies, streaming, and researching everything about their idols can seem a bit over the top. I definitely am trying to not get influenced by that and just enjoy the artists’ music and what they do rather than going overboard. A melody here ✨💘🤟🏼 (I’ll look forward to a BTOB comeback!! It’s been awhile!)
56:04 yeah melodies are SO CUTE I feel like they just keep to themselves and don't interfere in fanwars and stuff like of course there's gonna be that minority of toxic fans in every fandom but I feel like it's even less for melodies, I do love btob but I don't consider myself a fan cause I Don't listen to their music as often but I do respect the group and melodies (I got a lot of friends that are melodies and i love em )
Watching this a year later and this all stands true with toxic fans. I was scared of being a STAY and a Hidden KARD because of horror stories of toxic fans but I am thankful that I have found an amazing community in both fan bases.💕💕💕💕
honestly the toxicity in kpop fandoms needs to be talked about more , and thank you to the get real hosts for shedding light on it. It becomes really unpleasant to really be involved in the fandom culture. Its toxic and honestly just weird , i honestly love kpop but i just prefer not to associate myself with any fandoms , its just too toxic its insane.
I tried getting into K-pop and thought being asked by fandoms to constantly stream and to daily log into music show voting apps to watch ads to get credit to vote felt annoying. I appreciated hearing the hosts say they want fans to enjoy their music without obsessing about being the best fandoms and building their artist’s successful careers.
the real reason I checked out the episode was to hear BM confirm or deny sliding into Katie's dms. not disappointed lol. jokes aside, always great to see the trio reunited! really is such chill, real energy
I love to see the three of you together once again!!!! Thanks, Peniel Ashley and BM 💙💙💙. You are the reason I'm here watching this channel 😊😊 I love to hear your thoughts about the Fandom and thankful for the comments about Melody 💙 Yes if this wouldn't be a nice, well-mannered Fandom, I've probably wouldn't be here 😅 May you stay healthy and that we may see you together again soon 🙏
Really enjoyed this episode so much! I'm a Lavely and Hidden Kard, myself. I appreciate y'alls view on fandom because as much as I love kpop I know sometimes people are going to view the fandom negatively. I feel like i support kpop in a reasonable capacity (for kpop standards lol) as much as I support non kpop artists that I love. But for some reason I'm only looked at differently for being a kpop fan. No one ever judges me for liking Sza or Megan Thee Stallion but If I tell them I'm a kpop fan, I'm treated a bit differently. It's nice to know y'all think about the fans this genuinely. I haven't listened to much of BTOB but I'm a Peniel fan too lol because of this show and a bit of kingdom. I've been a Lavely longer than a Hidden Kard and it makes me so happy to see Ashley laughing with friends and giving her opinion, etc! And BM the new music was fire!!! I went to the Dallas concert, it was so good! -Sorry for the super long comment lol
No, thank you for keeping on with Get Real. It really made my pandemic, and all the heavy things that happened, way more fun. Please know that some of us fans are indeed normal, and if we met you we'd just say hi and have a normal convo like with any stranger or friend 😂 But it IS funny and weird, cause with Peniel and Ashley (BM, Harry and Junny too) it feels like we've been close friends for a while now lol Anyway, thank you too for what you do :)
Like idol like fans, I agree with that. I know idol just human, but I don't like when the idols support their fans to be toxic even it just a joke. I mean there are some idols feeling so proud when their fans known as the most scariest fans. And "protect" the idols but it just make them known as toxic fans.
Peniel didn't forget to mention "of BTOB" even when Ashley introduce herself as Peniel..aaa my melody heart🥺
I would die to see fans on the show, like that actually sounds so fun.

BTOB members always bringing their group's name in their individual projects 💕
Which Korean actor was bm talking about?
Seon sok goo
im so glad ashley mentioned abt the toxicity bcs it needs to be said! and peniel making sure to add btob at first was so cute
Thanks for those Harry and BM's episodes! I'm feeling spoiled
Peniel " of BTOB" as always 🤍💙😉
so excited for bm to be back for this ep! missed him
So proud to be a Melody 💙 most precious fanmily that hits closest to my heart and to BTOB as my home 🏠💙💙 Good to see you three together again! Stay healthy with all these schedules coming up! Always supporting you guyssss 😉
I love how ashley keeps on changing her clothes even when they film these on the same day 😭( I know she just added a jacket this time but she usually changes her clothes and well adding a jacket is still something ) I appreciate her efforts
peniel also did a change and took off his hat 😭❤
I may be an EXO-L, but my Melody heart will always stay around. BtoB brought me to kpop. I will forever be grateful for that. I will always support every member and the whole group. Thank you also for bringing amazing music to this world.
speaking of the Aussie boys, skz is having a comeback soon too! pls invite them to get real! in the past 2 years, chan has been going on live every weekend and talks to stays about the realest and most random shit about life so i believe he’s the best guy to guest on the show. looking forward to this!! 🥺🙏
Lmao when Peniel was talking about the crying
Going from CC to CCC: Cancel Culture --> Constructive Criticism Culture with the Dive crew... always keeping it real.
i think definitely the industry pumps this idea to fans head if they dont stream their idols are gonna fall out of popularity and disband, so in the end the company profits bc of this and eventually their are those people that get overly obsessed with streaming and can become aggressive/toxic to other fans or fandoms for not streaming. its super sad what the greed of capitalism can do to people.
this came at a perfect time for me, I have always been all about the music first and have pulled back from a lot of fandoms because they make everyone miserable.
I was shocked and couldn't believe that those comments were real and I immediately closed twt for my mental peace 😂😂😂
I was just happy when they discussed about this topic which is considered very sensitive topic for idols to discuss..
BM's voice when he speaks English is just so handsome 😭
nothing makes my day as Get Real episodes, especially with my most loved trio❤ thank you Dive Studios, Ashley, Matthew and Peniel!!!💚💚💚💚
Shame on them.
fan wars were a thing 25 years ago. they used to be pretty intense too from what I hear.
@@rkhandle actual fighting occured
@@edwardac3440 lol. imagine them ajumas now reminiscing about their fights way back in the days. pretty sure they must be around 35-43 year old range.
Yeah..if you ain't know who TVXQ are give respect...you have no clue
The "vibe" in the past might have been nice for foreign fans, but it most certainly wasn't for Korean fans. The fanwars of 1st and 2nd gen groups are legendary. Straight up brawls, property damage, physical injury, even rape allegations were not out of the question. And that's just what fans did to each other, what some did to the idols they didn't like or even their favs was worse. The only good thing now is that it's mostly moved online as that largely removes the physicality of it, but that also in no way lessens it - in fact, it only makes it easier.
My discovery road:
-Became a Melody about 2 years ago, got curious about Peniel's character and Discovered that he was part of a podcast...the Get Real Podcast!
-Peniel then has been my Ult Bias (see what I did there? lol)
-Fell in love with BM's energy, love for life and positivity, then ultimately became a HK!
- K Im done -
---- Sorry not Sorry but the long azz post, but I just somehow felt compelled to write this essay lol!! --
BM back again! Always so so happy to see him on Get Real again! I can't wait for the new KARD comeback 💙
Let's go, Get Real Fam!
If there's a Welcome to Waikiki 3 or So Not Worth It 2...They should cast the whole Dive Studio Crew.
i agree about the cancel culture thingy too bcs some people doing that on social media are really just doing that as some kind of performative activism i feel like? its like not even a constructive criticism and its always out of hate instead of care about the actual issue too so its just honestly frustrating to see. like there are actual serious and worse things going on in the world and like ashley said, they're all humans soo yup.
This is a holy trio and I’m really proud to be their fan!
45:20 OMG DIVE STUDIOS PLEASE DO THIS it would be so interesting for the artists and fans to sit down and have a conversation about kpop and music and fan-idol relationships!
hope BM stay as co- host and not just a guest co-host .. original hosts still the best 💙
I love this trio so much, makes me feel like i'm hanging out with friends 💕
Hidden Kard here!! 💖
Waiting for the comeback! 2023.04.10 👏
They really give siblings energy ❤ peniel and bm took care of Ashley when she was talking about her fans, they were quick at expressing the concern and peniel already ask for tissue ❤
And who dares to said that Peniel is not funny. I keep laughing at all his jokes
36:19 it's actually quite cool to be the only blue in a sea of pink lights
damn i haven’t been in the fandom culture in a long time and idek they created their own slang. that so crazy.
im honestly really glad you guys discussed the extreme toxicity of these fandoms (while also acknowledging that its not everyone) but it really is crazy and kinda gets to dangerous points for the singers as well. also all these few loud toxic fans or antis are just horrible and clearly need help lol like who takes their time out to create multiple accounts and harassing ppl constantly daily?? thats just literally… seek help man😭
but yeah overall im happy y’all were full honest about ur thoughts on it especially that its coming from singers, we can hear your end of your feelings about these crazy situations and hopefully those ppl will learn that y’all see the garbage they throw and that its actually affecting ppl cause yeah you’re entertainers but that title shouldn’t mean that you’re stripped from being human cause y’all are still human at the end of the day.
The OGs are back Penelope, Big Matilda and Ashley let's goooo !!!
GET REAL honestly.... this is my favorite episodes of get real. you touched on so many actual issues. thank you for all you guys do!
As an Aussie, I feel accurately represented 😂
Always proud to be a melody 💙
Hidden kard and lavely are fandoms that we can trust and be friends with.
Get real listeners let's make our hosts proud of us too like their group fandoms! 💪
The first thing I come up with POB is the "Piece of BTOB" project in 2017 LOL
Just me being Melody😌💙
59:58 Peniel start giving a side look checking the sheet "when is this getting released?" for the BtoB comeback announced😂😂😂
I’m so busy I can’t watch this until I get some free time but i wanna say I’ve been waiting for BM to back im sure this ep will be interesting can’t wait to watch it
Please have Bang Chan and Felix on the show 🙏 😭 😔 😊
that would be hard cuz skz schedule is hella insane but let''s just hope for one day 🙏
They were on the Daebak show.
@@jasminebranch3007 and?
we want them on both
They're on tour, so it won't happen no time soon...
I love this podcast, I came here first bcs of Peniel, bcs I love his group, but ended up being a big fan of all the hosts and happy to get to know the guests here.
I wish I can meet you guys in real life someday, but I can't promise I won't be nervous.
Proposing an idea for Get Real fandom name: Realest!! Cause we're the Realest B)
Wishing nothing but the worst internet connection to toxic fans
56:04 yeah melodies are SO CUTE I feel like they just keep to themselves and don't interfere in fanwars and stuff like of course there's gonna be that minority of toxic fans in every fandom but I feel like it's even less for melodies, I do love btob but I don't consider myself a fan cause I Don't listen to their music as often but I do respect the group and melodies
(I got a lot of friends that are melodies and i love em )
I did not know I missed this trio so much
I tried getting into K-pop and thought being asked by fandoms to constantly stream and to daily log into music show voting apps to watch ads to get credit to vote felt annoying. I appreciated hearing the hosts say they want fans to enjoy their music without obsessing about being the best fandoms and building their artist’s successful careers.
Ashley speaking up about those so called lavely only if it is about the "accident" is something that really need to be said!
the real reason I checked out the episode was to hear BM confirm or deny sliding into Katie's dms. not disappointed lol. jokes aside, always great to see the trio reunited! really is such chill, real energy
There are two things that should go away in Kpop culture
1. Streaming
2. Aegyo
I love to see the three of you together once again!!!! Thanks, Peniel Ashley and BM 💙💙💙. You are the reason I'm here watching this channel 😊😊
I love to hear your thoughts about the Fandom and thankful for the comments about Melody 💙
Yes if this wouldn't be a nice, well-mannered Fandom, I've probably wouldn't be here 😅
May you stay healthy and that we may see you together again soon 🙏
Always love this og trio because they’re more than just a podcast dj, they are family.
WE LOVE YOU PENI, ASHLEY, & BM.
14:21 “Don’t worry about it.”
love seeing you three together !! and i hope to see BM in movies and series sooon 🎉
Let’s go!! King BM is back again again! Oooh it’s about to Get Real
