      Yes, it was a diamond in the rough. Though there were a couple of exaggerated stereotypes, it was a deeply moving film -- especially this scene.
      I would have liked if they had done more with the character of Fox. A good sub-theme would have been his evolution from a soulless bureaucrat, to conflicted, to humanitarian -- a good struggle-to-redemption theme, there. Of course, we wouldn't have had the smoke-blowing moment, but I could live without that.

    This movie is wonderful. Think of where she was before star man came into her life. Depressed heartbroken she lost her husband & can never have a child bc she is infertile. She not only got to love again but he gave her a child of her late husbands dna & his. He made sure she will never be alone again. He gave her not only the most amazing gift but a purpose & reason to live. Imagine losing ur husband & even if u meet someone else ull never have your own child. Imagine how having you're deceased husbands child & he will live on in her son. She obviously loved star man not bc he was a clone of scott but for himself. Omg I cried when he said he could make the baby go away if she wanted & hugged him. I love after this she asks where he Lives so she can show her son where his father came from. Also I cried at the end when she begged him to take her with him. He says he cant bc she will die & she doesn't care. It calls back to her explaining what love is caring more about the person u love than urself. She would rather more time with him & die than be alone but he reminds her about the baby. Omg I kinda wish their was a sequel about the baby but the movie is perfect the way it is. We know Jenny will be happy with a miracle child she never would have had not even if Scott were still alive. I love that he says the baby will be of ur husband but of him too. So beautiful. I also love the line about humans & more particularly americans that they are at their best when things are at their worst. Really applies to 9/11 & how people in ny & around the country came together. Too bad it doesnt apply today when we are more divided than ever. I think he also is talking about all the kindness of strangers that helped them travel on. Such an underrated film & carpenters best. I was surprised he did it actually I'm used to his movies having gore & horror but the score is very carpenter.

      Well, biologically it is her husband's baby, as Starman used DNA from Scott's hair to generate his human body. Starman is never shown in his original form as anything more as a glowing light, which makes me wonder if John Carpenter was implying that Starman was a purely spiritual being with no physical body (i.e. an angel)

      How do you figure it's "underrated"? Is that a word you just like to use when you can't think of anything else? Try a dictionary or a thesaurus. The review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reported an approval rating of 86% based on 35 reviews. The aggregator Metacritic gave the film a score of 71 out of 100, based on seven critics. In spite of being released at the same time as Dune and 2010: The Year We make Contact The film grossed a total of $28.7 million from its domestic run, 45.5 million in today's dollars. But it's underrated. Whatever you say.

  • @lucasdavis1964
    @lucasdavis1964 10 років тому +21

    When John Carpenter released his superior remake of Howard Hawks "The Thing From Another World" (titled the much shorter "The Thing") in 1982, Steven Spielberg unleashed upon movie-goers his heart warming Sci-Fi epic "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial." I think you know which movie was a big hit and which one was a bomb. Later onward (almost as an apology to those scared shitless from viewing/renting "The Thing), Carpenter went on to make "Starman." I don't know if he knew it at the time, but the cult film director managed to combine the bizarre coldness and tension of his remake with the innocence of Spielberg's petite, M&M-craving alien. His result was a film that didn't just mix genres but transcended them; like "Mork and Mindy" only dark and serious. Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen express this transcendence through performances that could easily be over-exaggerated. Bridges adds just enough seriousness and comic timing to make his "Scott" impersonator likable and believable while Allen shrugs off the character from "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and becomes a strong but vulnerable female lead (in other words, she's strong and vulnerable, but not a bitch). Sci-Fi and romantic drama rarely melt together this well. Decent date movie, I guess.

    • @jackryan9183
      @jackryan9183 10 років тому +1

      I agree with almost all of what you wrote except "superior remake of Howard Hawks "The Thing From Another World"". Carpenter LOVES "The Thing From Another World" (as do I) and puts clips of it in many of his films. The two movies are simply very different from one another. Moreover, they mean different things as well. But they are both great films in their own right. Also, Carpenter's film "The Thing" is not a "remake", but rather, a film that closely adheres to the novella source material "Who Goes There", by John W. Campbell, Jr. Hawk's (or Nyby's if you will) version is a cold war allegory in the form of a monster from outer space movie. But it is sheer brilliance. From the scientists vs. the military men to the "super carrot" antagonist...it has it all. Plus there would not be an "Alien" or even a "Jaws" (lurking in the shadows) if not for this movie. Throw in Hawk's signature of over-lapping dialogue and a classic is born.

    • @lucasdavis1964
      @lucasdavis1964 10 років тому

      You're right. I think a little bit of my own personal taste seeped into my synopsis of Starman. My bad. Hawk's film is a classic, but for me, it hasn't aged well (probably because so many films have copied it's formula), whereas Carpenter's is more towards my liking, kind of like Cronenberg's remake of "The Fly." I guess it's just how you look at it that's all. Nevertheless, they make one hell of a double feature.

      Lucas Davis FYI I know it's a small matter, but in the interest of accuracy, I wish to point out that the candy E.T. so loved in the movie was not M&Ms, but was Reese's Pieces instead. The M&M folks were approached first but turned Spielberg down, thinking a creature such as E.T. would scare kids. The Hershey company gladly jumped at the chance to promote Reese's Pieces in a film, and their sales jumped 60% after the film was released. I imagine someone's head at Mars Candy company rolled at about the same time.

    It was a love story and it was so sad that she couldn't go with him and she had a baby and it was so sad that she had someone and then they were gone! Scott was her dead husband and in a way Scott came back to life and then she found him and then loses him and she wanted to come with him! If I met an Alien with super powers and gave me a kid I would go with him if I could survive that is.

    As touching this is and as deeply I love this movie and its soundtrack...
    What if Starman is hostile?
    He gave her a child that will have his entire knowledge and will become a "Teacher"
    So it knows everything what he knows and could use it to enslave the planet or create a new super religion that could wipe out humanity not to mention the weapons it could build.
    Hell...for all we know about him he could be "The Thing" from John Carpenters Movie of the same name, just this time it does'nt use blunt force to get to it's goal...mindblowing...
    But anyway Starman is sweet and the movie is wonderful ❤️
