    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Jenny (Karen Allen) teaches Starman (Jeff Bridges) how to say goodbye as he prepares to leave Earth forever.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    Having crashed to Earth, an extraterrestrial space traveller must assume a human identity lest he be captured by the authorities. The alien (Jeff Bridges) chooses the likeness of the recently deceased husband of Jenny Hayden (Karen Allen). At first dumbstruck, Jenny becomes both hostile toward and frightened of her guest. He gradually wins her confidence, learning a few vital English-language phrases so that he can explain his presence. The "starman" has come to Earth with a message of peace, in response to the similar message sent out on Voyager One. He asks for Jenny's help in transporting him to the Nevada desert, where his fellow aliens are to pick him up and take him to his home planet. Soon he and Jenny form a united front against a mean-spirited National Security Council agent (Richard Jaeckel), who intends to seize the starman and turn him over for scientific scrutiny (and possible extermination). While en route to Nevada, Jenny grows closer to the gentle-natured Starman, eventually making love with him. By the time he is poised to leave, she is carrying his child, leaving the field wide open for a sequel--which was never produced, though a weekly TV version surfaced in 1986.

      There was something about her that made her the only person to play her role. Gorgeous, but something that radiates calm and warmth and something kind of ethereal. Seen her in other things and being interviewed and it does seem that that's something she carries with her, not purely acting.

      In most cases I find sequels to be pointless; sapping whatever it can from the original story. Poorly imitating its authenticity and desperately trying to recreate the moments the original cast were able to share with one another and capture on film. Having said that I'd love to see a sequel for this. The original story planted enough seeds for a second harvest. I'd love to try and write it !

    Like some other of my favorite films, sometimes just hearing the music for a minute or less can reduce me to jelly. When Hollywood wants to be good and not just make money in China and makes films for their American middle class audiences, they can be so inspirational. It's a real art form. (another movie that hearing the music for about a minute is enough to make me run from the room crying is the original 1939 movie "Of Mice and Men", music by Aaron Copland... I'm having to wipe my eyes just remembering the music at the end, after Lenny's demise, when you see the squirrel run up the tree and the leaves falling....you know, I can't see to type practically...)

    The thing I love about this scene is the small details. This giant metal ball that travels through the freezing cold of space comes close to the planet above the meteor crater. It's so cold that anything around it instantly precipitates out of the air even what little moisture is in the air. So it's snowing!!!
    Ok So I geeked out, but after I watched it a few times, I asked myself.... why is it snowing??? Why can you see their breathe? Because it's so cold.

    • @mnomadvfx
      @mnomadvfx 4 роки тому +2

      I'm pretty sure it's snowing because Starman's body doesn't have long and the cold will keep it going a bit longer - he suddenly goes from being bent over and weak to straight backed and somewhat stronger once it kicks in.

    “Tell the baby about me”
    What’s powerful about this line for me is that in the train scene he tells Jenny “when he grows up, he will know everything I know”
    So the fact that he tells Jenny this at this moment represents doubt, even fear which are human qualities!
    Such a small detail but wow!
