If you’re working through your first donut, let me tell you something that might motivate you. 2 years ago I was working on my first donut as a 45 year old guy that never touched any 3D design application ever, and couldn’t draw a proper stick figure to save my life. Starting with a donut, I now have a 3d design and animation side hustle that might one day eclipse my full time income, and I actually love doing it. You never know where this donut will take you.

@@marred2277 I get all my work now via word of mouth. I originally started by offering animated business logo designs locally in neighborhood Facebook groups, and I did a free giveaway through a project called “Buy Nothing” where you gift things to people. Through the buy nothing offering I created a UA-cam channel intro for a local acupuncture clinic, which in and of itself led to about $20k in work through other local businesses.

@@STANY0307 not a dumb question at all. Right now I’m specializing in mostly 3D business logo design, but I’ve been doing a lot of animated social media branding work, like UA-cam channel intros. That’s been relatively new the past 6-9 months but has been taking off. I do some odd jobs here and there, for example I did some animated graphics for a local company to use for their website.

@@Ferrous_Bueller thanks for the reply. And that's great what you are doing! You came a long way in just two years unlike me. I wish you keep growing and improving. I am 17 and have decent skills in 3D. However I can't decide what niche I should choose. I like making interior scenes for horror games but not sure if that would earn me enough to pursue that as a career. So maybe I will go with architecture visualisation or maybe environment art. Not sure, still confused after 2 years of using Blender lol

GEOMETRY NODES - at 7:41 I actually had to attach the "Object Info" scale output to the "Instance on Points" scale input for this to work properly. Otherwise, I got HUGE spheres all over my donut. My first thought was to click "relative" in the "Object Info" node and that fixed the scaling issue but all of the sprinkle spheres were offset in a bad position.

This lesson is very easy to follow. Easier than the last version for sure.
One of my biggest criticisms though with these tutorials is that Andrew's 20 years of experience has him on a different level than us and I think he forgets that sometimes. He tends to fly through some steps without mentioning what he does. He's pretty good about it like 98 percent of the time but that ONE thing that he forgets to mention, takes him two seconds, because he knows how to do it, but for those who don't know how to do it, they have to spend an hour to hours figuring out a small step that could have been mentioned. I can understand that his time is limited but so is ours sometimes.
In this case, it's when he renamed Density Max to Sprinkle Density. He just hit N without mentioning it and didn't tell us that
that was what we have to do to rename that value. If you would have simply mentioned that we had to hit N, we could have seamlessly gone to the next step. (To rename Density Max, hit N to pull up the properties menu and you can rename it there).
Thankfully I figured it out within a couple of minutes thanks to having to deal with stuff like this before, but unfortunately many beginners who are relying on him to teach us articulately will be spending an hour to hours googling how to rename that value. Mentioning every step is kind of critical and I've had to spend hours in the past trying to figure out things that could have been mentioned in one second.
This isn't just Andrew either. It's many of these guys teaching Blender. EVERY DETAIL MATTERS and one small mistake can ruin your project just as they have ruined several of mine in the past.

One small feedback item I have is that it would be helpful for you to verbalize some quick movements you do. I know it shows most of your actions on the bottom of the screen but if you are quickly using hotkeys to swap views, or change modes, or go full screen, or back to geometry nodes its helpful to tell us what you are clicking as a reminder. Example: I had to click back a few times at 16:52 I had to watch a few times to see how you brought up the option to name the input.
Thanks for the great course just trying to put in my 2 cents as a beginner designer following along!

With spherical sprinkles it's very easy to do an exactly correct minimum distance if you do not want any overlap, which is just twice the radius of your spheres, so if you use a radius of 0.01 for the sphere, just use a distance of 0.02 for the min distance. Of course once you do the elongated sprinkles, that's no longer going to be true

Lol Andrew, just wanted to let you know on 18:50 when you scaled the donut, the reason it was scaling incorrectly was because you had your pivot point set to median point (it takes the average origins and scale their locations). Change your pivot point right above your view port next to global. You can use the 3d curse pivot or the active element, which acts like a child parent relationship.
I know you knew this. Probably just forgot.

side note for anyone maybe thinking about using the multiple doughnut idea...
its a good idea to also link the "seed" value to the Group output node. although the amount of sprinkles changes, changing the orientation of the sprinkles does just as much, if not more to make em look random. (with the seed value just radomizing what random you get in that specific instance)

literally "looking forward to the next episode" every day this week. (although I admit to going back to last-year to review the differences between this year and last!). As I see in some comments here people are sharing stories as to how this is impacting their career. I'm a creative director / art director - so, I generally just "direct" people on specific elements for a project, such as 3D animators, or motion graphics designers for various projects. Thanks to this channel (basically, although not the only one I follow), I now feel confident enough to just jump in and build some of the more common / basic animations myself (simpler things like logo animations, etc. etc.) - but... honestly, a great time saver because I can now speak the language a little better when working with animators, or... (often to their horror!)... I'll just build an example myself and say "well, more like this!"... love it. And... I always show 3D animators my donuts so they can know exactly where my mad skillz come from. AND... I have actually converted a few die-hard Maya animators... to Blender, recently, because they now are starting to believe it might be worth it if a clueless senior AD can use it, it's probably worth looking at. After this donut - I think I am actually going to build a few actual production-ready animations for projects myself in Blender.

It seems there are two ways to add an UV Sphere, but only one which actually makes sense and works.
The way he shows is when being in Object Mode and, this is important, have the UPPER part of the window active (e.g. when you just click on the Donut or the plane). This way you get the same menu as shown in the video and the UV Sphere will be added into the "Scene collection" where you also have the Donut, icing, light, camera, and plane.
When I tried it, the bottom part of the window (the one with the nodes) was active, and it shows a slightly different menu where the UV Sphere is located at "Mesh - Primitives - UV Sphere". Someone would say: Who cares? Must be same, no? No.
This way the UV Sphere will be added directly as a NODE but NOT as an OBJECT, like in the video. For some reason, this has some effect, as later on I cant smooth the sprinkles.
This is completely counterintuitive, as everything happens in the node section, except this particular action.

Also had to reset the cursor to the world origin by right clicking, snap, cursor to world origin. Things weren't sitting on the floor, so re-positioned that too.

Finally got to Part 6. I was banging my donut against the wall trying to get something remotely realist and looking like what was designed in parts 1-5. Blender UI controls still blows my mind compared to other "drawing" applications (both 2d and 3d) that I've used in the past. I personally think they put way to much into Blender for a single app (coming from a seasoned software developer), but that's not a fault of Blender Guru who created these awesome videos to help me get through making a donut. I never actually baked a real donut to eat, but wonder if it's as difficult to do the first time (making just 1 or 2 donuts by hand without a machine to assist).😋

I made my donut around .09m in diameter (more like a bundt cake than a donut) and the sprinkles are an issue, even though they're .002m. I noticed when I followed his instructions for distribution points on face and increased the density, there were still no points visible. Everytime I try one of his tutorials, something cursed happens that hardly anyone else, or no one else is experiencing and I don't know how to fix it.
Edit: He does the 4.0 tutorial different than the previous ones. Didnt think he would scale it down later in the tutorial. Guess I should start over and actually follow instructions😅
