Fixing A Locked Shut Patio Door | Getting It Open & Repairing The Lock
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 гру 2024
- In this video I attempt to open a patio door that has got stuck locked. The mechanics of the lock have broken leaving the top section of the door completely locked shut. the key wont turn in the lock and there is no way to open it in the conventional way. My Aunt asked a professional to help her and after he arrived and was very abusive to my Aunt he said he would fix it for £500 + parts! This is unacceptable. With the few tools I have I went round and got to work.
I have had to fix a patio door in the past but it was a completely different problem and a very different locking mechanism.

Hi and thanks for your video, it was very informative. My problem is that my multi-lock mechanism on my single PVC front door has failed and I can't open the door to access the mechanism. I took the handles off (which are just spinning) and when I removed the spindle two pieces of metal that make up the square housing for the spindle to rotate through fell out. The key will enter the barrel but won't turn. Obviously, the mechanism will need to be replaced, but I will need to open the door to access it. Can you tell me how can I do that?
Hi David. I'm sorry I wouldn't know how to help you. I just saw a problem that needed fixing and luckily I was able to temporarily fix it (she was getting a new conservatory a few months after this video)
I will pin your comment in the hopes that someone will be able to help you. Good luck
would have been easier to just break the whole euro lock barrel in half using a hammer and a cold chisel then manipulating the lock mechanism through the barrel hole

Well done for fixing it in the first place and secondly saving your Aunt cash ,and thirdly giving her access into her garden, she must have been proud of you, 5stars
I'm honestly just glad I could help her. She was really grateful. Thanks for your kind comment
Stuck screw? Lay an elastic band over the screw head, apply screwdriver, then turn. Watch it come right out immediately. Works on old rusted or seized screws of all types. My name is Vincent and you can thank me later. Ps. I'd like to thank the fella who introduced me to this, as it has saved me causing carnage on a number of projects. It's a kind of magic trick.
I've tried it in the past but never got it to work. it just rips the elastic band to pieces. perhaps I'm doing it wrong...Have you actually tried it? if so how did you get it to work?
Thanks, this video helped me fix the exact same problem on a slightly different door.

Love the unvarnished approach to solving your aunty’s problem. Well done.
Thank you very much.
Thanks for video, the locksmiths will hate you for this. I will help lots of people.
You are correct it is awful for Locksmiths to watch this kind of video, but not for the reason you would imagine. The home insurance is void with this type of "repair" and although most people on here will be saying its a good thing he did its the reverse i`m afraid.

Great video - you show a real-life repair issue as it is with 'warts and all' and would rather see the worst case scenario than some of those videos where they are just showing you how to strip & re-assemble a brand new door. Anyone can do that!
Just about to attempt a similar repair myself... Thanks for your advice, much appreciated & v. useful.
Thank you, I try and add all of my fails as well as my successes in each video as I learn more from mistakes and I feel others do too. A task like this is always a bit fiddly but a bit of time and patience often pay off in the end. Thanks again for your kind comment

Good video. Similar problem. But tried a different approach. Took pins out of hinges on inside to release door, taking the whole door off. Took out the locking mechanism, bit of WD-40. The spring loaded clasp thingy near the handle was the problem (not springing) took it out and working perfect. Just now need a few quid spending on it. But can open/shut and lock again so all good for now.
I'm glad you sorted it buddy. Well done
Hi, I just wanted to thank you for posting this. I am not really into DIY but I felt inspired to to try to fix my jammed conservatory door. Having opened the lock it was just jamming and responded to a little targeted WD-40. All fixed, thanks for posting this.

My outside lock for my slider door spins and I can’t unlock it from the outside. Sometimes a little wiggle will engage the lock and I get locked out. It does lock from the handle inside. Any help is appreciated before I take the lock out and try to reconnect the lock to the handle lift inside. Thx.
I'm sorry but I can't really help you I basically just took it apart and fixed what I could I'm no expert. I'm really sorry. The video is more to show that anyone can do it rather than a tutorial on how to do it.

Can you break a patio door gearbox in the lock mechanism by just inserting or forcing an incorrect key ? How does the gearbox in a door lock break?
I'm very sorry I did not see this comment. I couldn't have done it for this door as I still needed to be able to lock it afterwards even if it wasn't fully secured
How about a door where the handle has gone and the gearbox seems to have gone also.... I've taken out the pins on the inside to try and get the door out but the hooks on the door strip (lock) won't budge... Any tips?
I couldn't tell you I'm sorry. There are so many different things that can stick/lock. It's impossible to say what might work. Good luck though
@@TheOffGridFamily I've just watched a video where a guy removes the cylinder by breaking it off and looks like a screwdriver is used to release the latch.... Any ideas on that? All I need to do is release the latches and rollers

Im using this video as a “what not to do” advert on our company facebook page! Total shambles and fucked the full multi point lock 🤣🤣 Well done buddy, people like you keep me in a job!
Its people like you that left my aunt in tears and meant i had to help her out. At no point have i said this is how to do it. She needed a door to be able to lock and unlock while she was away. Thank you for increasing my revenue and showing everyone the kind of person you are...keep up the good work
The Off Grid Family its a new gear box is all that was needed, now needs a full new multi-point lock, so really its you who will leave people in tears with your cowboy videos.
The Off Grid Family I have made no assumptions at all. I am commenting on what i have watched in your video. Point being you are showing people how to open a jammed, (not locked) multi-point lock and you clearly don’t have a clue what you are doing! As for your earlier comment about people like me making people like your aunty cry, is that not an assumption you are making about me? I have been a locksmith for 17 years so I know when a job is being done incorrectly, also you don’t know what I charge so how does your comment stand unless it is an assumption?
its funny how diplomatic you have become when Your character has been called into question, you still haven't answered why you spend your free time searching UA-cam checking out people who "open stuck doors"
I genuinely think it is sad that you have come online like so many 15 year old's to attack other people. I do believe you are a locksmith and I believe you have done it for as long as you say. It makes me sad that instead of trying to help others in the same situation you decide to spend your time throwing hate at people who have. Instead of taking the time to "tell me how to do it" Maybe its a good idea if you teach others "FOR FREE" how they should!!
I see you have a load of subs and how to vid's that you have spent the time to make for free for everyone!? oh that's right you spend all of your valuable time hating on others. Well haven't you have shown your worth. Do me a favour and Stay away from my free channel and make your own for others to judge. Good luck in getting a life and hopefully a girlfriend to take your mind off us cowboys!!
I don’t search videos, your video was posted on a locksmith forum to give us all a laugh! As a locksmith i cannot show people how to open doors online as that is irresponsible! They could then use my knowledge to commit burglaries etc. I do train people free of charge, if i trust them and appropriate checks have been made. If you read my comments again, you self righteous prick, you will notice that i was not spreading hate but instead thanking you and people like you for keeping me in a job!
After trying everything with that lower screw you can just get that drill back and put a drill bit in that is about the same diameter as the screw head. Then just drill that screw's head off and you have access. You can always work on removing the threaded part once you have it all apart. That would have been my method anyways.
The struggle is real 😫
True!
I think you need a bigger screw driver as that one your using is not up for the job ? I have around a dozen of all sizes ?
Woth the screw driver in the screw at the same time as hitting screwdriver turn anticlockwise
I've got similar problem to your aunts door , but my problem no key! As it's balcony door a floor up, I've managed to unscrew , but the main key thing is in minus handles inside and out, it's seems jammed up the top, what do I do?

Great start 2 my day had same problem so had 2 run at the door and smash it with my hip and ass it worked doors are open but key broken in lock pmsl
Well thats a quicker way to achieve the same results lol This made me laugh. Thanks for the comment
Great video but it doesn't solve my problem. I have a fairly new door that was moved from the front to the back. Mom never used the key or even locked the bolt so I have no idea if this is even the correct key. I decided to lock the bolt last night and when I went to check the other side the key wouldn't even turn. The inside lock turns but doesn't seem to do anything. I think the door was used when he put it on my mom's house in the first place. Uggg
Oh dear. I'm sorry I can't help. I don't know enough about these kinds of things. I just did what was needed and fixed it. I hope you find a solution
Even if you have visible screws, it’s still hard to remove them. My handle has an invisible screw, and it’s closed. I have no idea how to open it, and I will most likely need a cutter to cut it off. I’m so pissed off at those ‘brilliant handle makers😓, hiding screws for no reason.
Well good luck. I hope you can sort it
This could have been avoided by maintenance
No one does it nowadays
But a little squirt of WD40 OR 4 in one oil through the lick barrel and up and down the locking mechanism strip on the edge of the door every month or so would stave off the inevitable issues and cash saving
That will appear at the most inopportune timing
This also applies for all hinges and handles/ latches around the house
Some things are too expensive to replace in this throw away age
A gentle reminder to people will save a lot of people heartache and cash
Good informative warts an all video all the same
Well done
Name & shame the locksmith for trying to take advantage
Yeah I spoke to her about upkeep on her new doors/windows and as far as I know she is keeping her eyes open for issues before they are a problem etc.
The whole channel premise is "not wasting things" I pretty much reuse everything i have. I'm the guy people bring their broken stuff to rather than throwing it away.
Thanks for the comment. I hope you will join the channel, creative criticism is always welcome
Looking at the state of the conservatory I’d say the locksmith was right!(although he shouldn’t have been abusive)
I agree and disagree in equal parts. Things last so much longer than we think surely we should try and keep what's there for longer than just wanting a payday. As long as it's structurally safe I would rather it stay up than pay hundreds of pounds to change it wasting resources, time and money. The guy was just after money. The fact that it was a vulnerable woman was to his advantage. I would guess without any proof that this is how he makes most of his money. Most people in his situation would have looked after the person and help them out as much as possible. He just left her in tears it doesn't matter what job you are in you do not leave people like that you try and help them to the best of your ability. Just for your information that conservatory is still up and structurally sound and that is according to a surveyor who is an expert in conservatories and housing subsidence. The guy was completely wrong and the way he went about it was too and I'm just glad I was able to sort it for her. There's too many vulnerable people who rely on the people who are apparently experts and are let down

My problem is it's my front door so there's no give. I can get the handles off unlike you. so what can I do now?????
Can anyone help? Got a porch door upvc the door is locked put the key in turned it and now it's solid key will not move at all. Need to replace the cylinder. How do I get it out? Cheers
Hi Ken Have you tried WD40?
Presuming that you can remove the key, replacing the cylinder is by removal of a single bolt. Look inside the door frame front and numerous screws hold in the locking strip, but there is a single bolt level with the bottom of the cylinder. Remove the handles, remove the bolt and the cylinder should slide out in either direction.
Just drill out the pins to euro or take handle off, get some grips or adjustable and snap the cylinder. Then pop up the Lever inside the multipoint
That would leave the door without a lock?
Well, 500 sounds expensive and idk rates in your area but multipoint locks are problematic and getting a door open, finding and purchasing new replacement parts, possible multiple trips, labor etc, I can see rates can go up really fast whrr rt n you hire a pro. Plus possible warranty issues by just making something work as opposed to fixing it right, I’m gonna say, good on you for helping your aunt but I wouldn’t say the locksmith was gouging you. Probably could’ve gotten quotes. I run into those a lot and they’re definitely hard to bid especially when you don’t know what’s actually wrong with it. The quote you got was really high (jmo) but idk if they just felt like a new door was best option cause the old one was a mess. But I also understand she just can’t afford to replace it right now. This is all jmo. Thanks for sharing!
It wasn't even the price which was the main issue he was so horrible to her that she phoned me crying her eyes out. He wouldn't leave after she said she couldn't afford it and he suggested she knock the whole conservatory down (handy he could do it for her for a price) he was just a scummy workman. Sadly there are a few bad apples in every profession. Thanks for the feedback
@@TheOffGridFamily awww man sorry to hear that.
Well done mate, by removing the hook bolt mechanism and just leaving the centercase, you have left that door vunerable to a break in. If that happened, the insurance company would refuse to payout the full claim, in which case i hope you have public liability insurance because you are responsible. Call your Local locksmith ( Not a National company) to get the job done correctly and securely at a competitive price.
I love these types of comment. You assume things and then think you must be right. Im not going to get into it. but try very hard to get all the facts before making your mind up!
I don't have to assume things ,i know by experience, 45 years experience. As an expert locksmith i know when an odd job man has cocked up
I'm not an odd job man (assumption 1) I am her nephew. if you watched and read the description you would know that it was a temporary fix just while she went away for that night. With 45 years experience you wouldn't need to watch my video which tells me I was right in my other comment about your trolling hobby, its sad that a grown (in years only) man would go on youtube only to disrespect others who are just trying to help people out. Now please don't take up any more of my time. You are obviously retired because you have to much time on your hands. Why not take up gardening or some form of collecting. It may keep you busy enough to stop your senseless commenting. UA-cam Comment section is such a valuable resource until you get idiots just filling them with "I know better, You are rubbish" comments. Creative criticism is always helpful if you would like to try it but please please watch the whole video first, then read the description and then ask some questions. This guy doesn't know what he's doing in this set up Video. !.The right hand door would be secured by Bolts on the edge of the door, therefore they wouldnt wobble. so he would have to get the door with the handle open first. If you look at the cylinder on the outside it's clean ,but later it's a dirty cylinder. He doesn't show how he released the lower hook bolt or the damage to the strike plate. Only an idiot would oil the inside handle ,because the screw goes 3 or more inches through the door and engages in the external handle. you do not remove the faceplate of these locks, without first removing the handles, the cylinder and then the whole mechanism from the door.
