Well, it's pretty difficult to choose, it depends on the level of interest. I would recommend the book I co-authored (in terms of shameless self-promotion: Encounters of the Filmic Kind: Guidebook to Film Theories), but I find Robert Stam's introductory books pretty great as well. On a more specific level, depends on the part of the topic - suture, interface etc. have a great amount of literature from the 1970s onwards.
