- Original Dutch title: "Onze Vloot", a Dutch navy film from 1923. The film is 'gold' for naval enthusiasts! Extremely rare footage of early types of submarines and a torpedo gun boat G-13 in action in The Netherlands almost a century ago. The film shows the gun boat being prepared to go on an exersize to test a new type of torpedo.
The film also shows very rare shots of very old Dutch naval vessels in the harbor of Den Helder, including a gun boat, an armoured ship: the Hr.Ms. Heemskerck (1908), an armoured cruiser: the Hr.Ms. Gelderlander (1900) and the ancient Hr.Ms. Koningin Emma (1879) with its three masts still partly intact. The latter ship was used as a "wachtschip", i.e. a floating barracks, until WW-II. In part-1 of this series from 1928 this ship can be seen with it masts removed. There after we see the Hr.Ms. Medusa (1911).
After completing the torpedo test the crew of the gun boat has a hard time to retrieve the still smoking torpedo and to hoist it back on board.
The original B&W film has been motion-stabilized, speed-corrected, contrast- and brightness enhanced, de-noised and A.I. upscaled and colorized.

Mooi om die oude beelden van mijn woonplaats Den Helder te zien!
The understated colour and no music is perfect
The video quality is so much better as it's enhanced in hd
Your work is truly incredible. Thanks for the vids!
Het inkleuren vind ik hier minder geslaagd wat vooral bij de Nederlandse vlag te herkennen is. Verder mooi gedaan.
Struth the signals rating on the semaphore flags has been snorting speed!
Excuse my lack of knowledge on Dutch politics/position in ww2, I am under the impression that the Dutch maintained a position of neutrality, correct??? Can you give me more context to what’s going on with the Navy I see here. This is prewar footage?? During your countries occupation by the Nazis, did the German forces commandeer the Dutch naval vessels and use them in the war against the allied forces?
What was the sailor “painting” on the outside surface of torpedo? Some kinda of oil to make it more “slippery” in the water or maybe for corrosion protection??
You did excellent work on these videos. I especially like the one showing the interior of the submarine and the commander operating the periscope and the camera view thru it’s viewfinder/rangefinder! Again, please excuse my ignorance but was that a Dutch officer or German officer in that particular scene on the sub I mentioned??
Thanks for the videos, RM from the US
I'm not an expert, but my guess is that similar excersizes were crucial to show any potential enemy that the Dutch Navy was on alert and well-trained and well-prepared. Indeed the Dutch were neutral during WW-I which obviously means that vessels being commandeered by the Germans was out of the question. This video is from 1923 so 5 years after WW-I.
So many questions! Anyone know how these wonderful torpedoes were guided to their targets?
Incredible to see the impellers spin! Battery operated electric motors? To think that we consider electric propulsion futuristic.. they had this 110yeaes ago!
Did some research and found out they were powered by compressed air. Amusing
I don't think they were guided. The moving control surfaces were probably connected to gyros to keep it on a straight course.
@@comedicsketches so they aimed and that was it? I wonder what the strike ratio was..
@@Vl7248 That was how all torpedoes worked until the Germans came up with the acoustically guided torpedoes late in WWII. It was a question of getting within a distance from the target where taking avoiding action became difficult, preferably impossible.
@@frankteunissen6118 not all torpedoes....read for example en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brennan_torpedo
or watch this ua-cam.com/video/XeyJbgrE8oc/v-deo.html.
It ran and was steered by wires
