Most things know how big a meal will fit in their mouths.
      There are exceptions though.
The Pac-Man frog being one. Not exactly uncommon for them to die trying to eat things way too big for them.

What's more interesting is that the heron pulls the bait away from the fish which are too big for the heron to eat, and saves it for the smaller fish 👍

Isn't this incredible? Top marks to whoever saw this and filmed it. There are so many things to consider here about what the Green Heron is doing. The man-made concrete and metal structure it is using to get the correct height and angle at the water's edge. The harvesting of the bread from wherever it got it. Inserting bait at a distance where it can still be retrieved. Not losing its bait to fish which are too big to catch. The size of prey it can effectively deal with. This clever bird has found a real niche.

Well I know for sure that I taught a night heron this trick in Hawaii.
I used to eat lunch at a stream near work and throw bread scraps into the water for the thousands of small tilapia there. A night heron (who are also out in the day), flew from across the stream when he saw the commotion the small fish were making while eating my bread, and landed right near me in about six inches of water. Herons can’t swim but they can wade in shallow water. I threw a piece of bread next to him and he got ready. Even pushed it into a better position. The fish went nuts for the bread and the heron nailed the fish.
I did this every day for months and named my bird “Carl”.
He’d see me get out of my truck and come flying across the stream to meet me for lunch.
Carl would do the same thing this heron is doing. If a bigger fish came along, he’d grab the bread and save it until it left. Then drop it back in for the smaller fish. Smart bird. I counted one time, Carl eating about a dozen little fish in one sitting. “Man, Carl aren’t you full yet?”
When I went back to work I’d leave some bread for Carl as bait, he’d grab it and fly across the stream to his nest or whatever.
I know for sure that heron’s won’t eat bread because Carl accidentally got a piece of bread in his beak while going for a fish and violently spit it out.
You should have seen the look on his face. Like soggy bread was the most disgusting thing he ever had in his mouth. Can’t disagree there, soggy bread will make most people gag. So I know he saved it for bait.
Those were good times and it made me wonder how long humans have been doing this with herons? Maybe for thousands of years.
Or maybe, herons have always used some kind of floating bait for fish and know that humans have a lot of it and feed the fish.
However it started, it is amazing to watch and fun to be a part of it.
Peace and aloha to you all. 🤙🏼

Green herons are one of the few species of bird known to use tools. In particular, they commonly use bread crusts, insects, or other items as bait. The bait is dropped onto the surface of a body of water in order to lure fish. When a fish takes the bait, the green heron will then grab and eat the fish. When green herons catch large frogs, they will drown them before swallowing them whole.

The level of calculation here is amazing. I tried a similar experiment some years ago based on a hypothetical bush survival scenario. I settled at the edge of a marshy area where there were frogs that darted away at my approach. I broke off tiny twigs and started tossing them in the water at an arms' reach distance. It's the tiny ripple when it lands on the surface that triggers their impulse to investigate. It didn't take me long to nab a couple of big juicy bullfrogs that a starving person would find some way to consume. That success felt like useful bushcraft knowledge. But this little feathered fisherman is next level - you can't even see the little minnow he was hunting until it was in his beak!
